English Mystery Series – Unlikeable Boss – Cat – Beautiful Administrative Assistant…

June 21, 2011

I received this from Chris, asking for our help in identifying an author:

I stumbled across your site today searching for a series that I cannot remember – either the author or any titles… I was wondering if you could assist on the search for the series I originally wanted.  It is set in England, the principals are police. The sgt is always worried about being ill, no one likes the boss, there is a cat which drives the boss crazy, a beautiful admin assistant and of course the Inspector(not sure of the title)…

Please post a comment if you believe you can help Chris to find the “missing” author.

Thank you!

That sounds like Martha Grimes and her Inspector Jury mysteries. His sargeant, Wiggins, is a hypochondriac. His boss, Superintendent Racer, is his biggest irritation. And I think that there is a cat involved.

I believe the author is Martha Grimes and the series is the Richard Jury series. The name of the cat is Cyril and it was always outsmarting Superintendent Racer.

This sounds intriguing. I have no idea what series this is but will be interested to see further comments.

I found this site – I couldn’t find anything with the description but it might spark someone’s memory.

Thank you, ALL, for your help in identifying Martha Grimes for Chris.

Here is a prime example of why I have such meticulous notes on all of the authors I read:

I actually read Martha Grimes! I have to admit that I am way behind, though. I used to read her mysteries as soon as they came out… But since I started reading new authors who site readers recommend, I have put a lot of my favorite authors on the back burner. I currently have Stargazey (1998) in my rather large TBR pile, and I think that it is obviously time I “reintroduce” myself to Jury and Plant!

    Danna,

Not sure if you got a partially written comment. The screen just disappeared as I was typing. Sorry.

The latest Jury mysteries are unreadable. Don’t waste your precious reading time on this drivel. I can’t remember when Martha Grimes jumped the shark but it was years ago. Stick with the early ones you missed.

Too bad because I loved Richard Jury, Melrose Plant, Trueblood, Cyril, et al, even Agatha, the annoying aunt. Another case of good author goes bad.

It all went to pieces when she started concentrating on Jury’s neuroses and the thoughts of the animals in the stories.

Stargazey is the fifteenth of twenty two Jury & Plant mysteries, and I know I enjoyed The Case Has Altered when I read it. I am looking forward to reading Stargazey. There are quite a few mystery authors who I have dropped when I thought they had simply run out of steam… (And, a lot of them continue to be very popular with the public.)
