Early Morning Show: Harry, Maggie, & Dave… CBS Cancels

Bah Humbug!  

I know that I wrote several times about how disappointed I was when they cancelled the Bonnie Hunt Show. I really did miss that feel-good show, and tried to replace it with other talk shows that I sampled, none of which I found myself wanting to “commit to” watching every day.

Let me mention that we don’t get the newspaper. We don’t pull a Paul Simon (“I get the news I need on the weather report…”), rather, we get our news from the internet. So, I had a novel idea… Why don’t I find a morning show that suits me… something that I can get invested in… a show with hosts who I feel I could listen to five days a week. That might solve both my gathering-of-news and my feel-good show problem, and give me something I can leave on while cooking dinner (I tape everything!) or while I perform some other mindless activity. (Hmmm… I wonder if my cooking reflects my attitude about it being a mindless activity?!?)

Eureka! I found the show!!! The last three months I have been watching/listening to the CBS Early Morning Show. I truly enjoy Harry Smith at the helm of the two hour show. Smith, along with Maggie Rodriguez and Dave Price, gave me another show that I thought was top rate, and I actually looked forward to seeing them.

Kiss of Death!!! I tell you, it never fails! There are two things of which I am sure: 1. When I get in the shortest line at the grocery store, invariably someone in front of me will need the cashier to go retrieve a pack of cigarettes from the locked-down area at the front of the store. OR 2. When I find a show that I really like, it is only a matter of time before it will be cancelled.

In short, CBS has decided to replace Harry Smith, Maggie Rodriguez, and Dave Price with a whole new team of anchors. I guess it’s time for me to start listening to music… off of DVDs that we own. That way, they can’t be cancelled!

***I’m sorry, but I have decided not to post any more comments about this topic. Today (January 4, 2011) I am seeing that I’m being inundated with so many comments from people who are as unhappy about this change in hosts as I am. But, as this is a blog about Cozy Mystery books, I am going to have to agree with you all about how bad this decision is, but am not going to post any more comments.***

    • I don’t know, Judy. The only reason I know they won’t be returning is because apparently Dave insisted on saying goodbye the other day. He was pretty up in the air about his departure… I gathered that he had not lined something up. I then Googled about his departure and found that CBS wants to get better ratings, so it looks like they are bringing in a younger crowd… well, younger than Harry Smith…

      • Where are your minds, logic etc.????Didn’t you ever hear “if it isn’t broke don’t fix it”???
        I cannot believe these wonderful people are leaving or being forced to leave without a fond farewell at least. I guess I must have missed Dave’s last show.
        Please do the responsible thing and at least own up to your stupidity.

  2. I loved Bonnie Hunt as well. She is so talented but hasn’t yet found a show that sticks. I think Letterman was producing her shows for a while. I think she is a 2nd City Alum.

  3. I hate when that happens. I particularly hate it when a new series begins, I get excited about seeing it every week, like the characters and then it’s gone. Not sure where they are getting their ratings.

  4. We watch the early show on CBS every day, where the heck is Harry Smith and Dave, entirely new cast this week, hope they are just on vacation!!!!

    • Nope, June, the CBS Early Morning Show’s regulars aren’t on vacation.

      The new cast will be Chris Wragge, Erica Hill, Marysol Castro, and Jeff Glor. Apparently Wragge and Hill had wonderful chemistry on the Saturday morning version of the show >>> which I didn’t watch since Harry Smith was the driving force for my watching the weekday shows.

      I don’t EVER remember a CBS morning show winning the ratings game, but apparently the new executive producer of the show thinks it’s time to bump up the show’s Nielsen ratings.

      Oh well… another one has bitten the dust for me… I won’t be part of their Nielsen ratings meteoric rise as they trounce out both the Today Show and Good Morning America.

  5. I know what you mean about the shows you get interested in that get cancelled… They often seem to be some of the most original shows and networks leave alot of the unimaginative shows on. How many reality shows can society really watch!!!???

  6. I have been watching Maggie from when she was on the Saturday Early Morning Show and followed her to the weekly Early Morning Show. I truly loved Harry, Maggie, & Dave; I have missed them this past couple of weeks and have tried to give the change a chance, but find myself changing over to Good Morning America; which will be my new morning channel from here on out.

      I still can’t believe that the new executive producer of the show thinks that he will move the revamped show up in the ratings. I mean, does he really think that the Today Show or Good Morning, America are going to relinquish their spots? Good grief!

    go down to the deepest place.

Danna- you’re right! it seems that if I really like a show, it will inevitably get canceled! “Rubicon” – what a great conspiracy show – and of course – canceled – after only one season! they didn’t even give it a chance. I work late, so don’t watch morning shows, but I always liked Harry Smith – very down-to-earth kinda guy. however, I have to be a little partial to Jeff Glor – he’s from Buffalo, NY – my neck of the woods!

  11. What a shame that the NEW executive producer has taken it upon himself to fix what isn’t broken. When there are only three major networks, one of them has to come in last in the ratings. And, as I have said before, I don’t see the other two shows as moving over to take the third place… So, I am guessing that the new, revamped Early Morning Show will continue to be third in the ratings, only with a different, NEW cast…

  16. I am so sorry that the powers to be removed Harry, Maggie and Dave. I watched the Sat show several times and was not impressed by the cast. Now that they are your morning show cast, CBS lost, NBC won.

  18. I and my family have been watching Harry Smith for a long time now. He became a part of our family. His wit, intelligence, humor, compassion and yes, sometimes even his goofiness endeared him to us even more. Since the powers that be at CBS decided to let him and the rest of his team go there is no reason for us to continue watching CBS. Chris Wragge cannot compare and who the heck is the rest of his team?? NBC or ABC here I come. I will only come back to CBS when Harry Smith is restored to his rightful place!

  19. The only morning show I watch is The Early Show, and the only reason I watch it is Harry Smith, one of the best and brightest, the most credible, solid, and charming newsmen on TV. His last day will be mine….Now I have nowhere to go but NBC or ABC, unless and until Harry comes back. They have made, in my opinion, a terrible mistake.

  20. I will miss Harry and Maggie. WFSB in Hartford segued into CBS Early Morning Show and I loved it. I fear that the new show will be very youth oriented but not for an old fogy like me. I enjoyed Harry’s comments and Maggie’s insights. Why o Why the change.

  22. I was so glad that I continued to watch the Early Morning Show last week, and was able to see Harry Smith’s goodbye to his loyal viewers. (Also, I enjoyed Oprah’s heart-felt goodbye to him.)

    I’ll be interested in seeing if the new executive producer of the show is as great a sage as he thinks he is >>> This time next year, let’s see if the Early Morning Show has soared up the ratings ladder to first place. (I doubt it!)

    I think CBS should do itself a favor, and stop showing the ads with the new hosts. Yikes!

  23. omg, omg….i strongly agree with most of these posts!! big big mistake, to lose harry, maggie and dave. the new crew may work, but think mostly this will boost the other morning shows, not help cbs….what a ding dong mistake.
    i will probabley go back to good morning america, and will miss harry, maggie and dave. btw, i also liked the bonnie hunt show and miss that one as well!!

  24. why why why? can’t believe the change they made. maggie harry and dave were the best! my friends and i will definitely not watch—- we will start watching good morning america. they have really made a terrible choice!

  25. I am glad Harry is gone. His interviewing was terrible. He didn’t listen or give his guests time to finish a sentence. I liked the other two O.K. though. I think they should change one host at a time to allow us time to adjust to the change.

  26. I can’t believe they replaced the morning show crew.. How could they.. I found a morning show i liked and laughed with.. The group was funny and knowledgeable and i always looked forward to watching them.. Now they replaced them. How could they do that to all of us.. Now i have to find some other channel to watch or like the one lady said, i’ll just listen to music.. I can’t believe they did this.. I loved the show and the people on it… Thanks a lot

  27. I liked Harry, Maggie and Dave. They complimented each other and their program was good. Guess I will have to search for another early morning show. I can’t get into watching the new crew.
