I Don’t Want to Toot My Own Horn, BUT…

The first thing I do every morning when I come downstairs, is check my Cozy Mystery blog comments. You cannot imagine my surprise to find the following comment posted by Allison:

Nothing to do with this blog post, but… did you see? Jim Parsons from Big Bang Theory was on Craig Ferguson tonight. Turns out he loves cozy mysteries, and he mentioned your website!! How cool is that!

Allison, I agree, “How cool is that!”

I have to admit that I was so excited that I immediately found the link to CBS’s The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Being mentioned on TV is beyond exciting (even if the “dot com” was bleeped from “Cozy Mystery dot com”). Hearing these two men talk about the books they read, well, that in itself was exciting. I think it’s especially “cool” when people today are willing to let it be known that they love to read. I mean, when was the last time you watched a talk show where the love for reading was a topic? (And the reason for the guest appearing on the talk show wasn’t to plug his/her book?)

Of course, when my husband finally came downstairs, I made him sit down and watch the clip on my computer. That’s right! Even before he drank his first cup of coffee, which, by the way, is a time when I try not to bother him. (He’s not a morning person, but coffee does tend to help a bit…)

My husband has been telling me all day that I should write this. I was hesitant to do so because I truly didn’t want to toot my own horn, and most importantly, I didn’t want to appear to be a “paparazzi” type of exploiter of celebrities. (I don’t buy “paparazzi” magazines at the check out, and surely, I wouldn’t want Mr. Parsons to feel like I’m exploiting him.)

Nevertheless, I’m so excited about my “fifteen seconds of fame” that I just could not contain myself.

  2. You’re NOT being an exploiter of celebrity, so don’t worry about it! 😉 I saw this last night and was utterly delighted for you. All we authors of cozy mysteries know how vital the work that you, and your fellow champions of cozy mysteries, do in giving readers a chance to find us. It was so interesting to see a real fan, ready to find new authors, try to explain what a “cozy” is. As an author of traditional, closed-circle mysteries I know how tough it can be! Don’t worry, be happy – I know I am….Jim Parsons loves cozies – YAY!

  3. New series out is Annie’s Quilted Mysteries….they are set in Massachusetts and to date there are four books out…
    1. A Patchwork Murder by Jan Fields
    2. Raven Threads by KD McCrite
    3. A Midsummer Night’s Seam by Rachael Phillips
    4. Innocent Until Proven Guilty by Donna Kelly

    Note these are the same authors who wrote the original Annie’s Attic series. One nice thing about these books, on the spine above the title of the book, is the number in the series, so this way you can be sure to read them in order.

    And as usual, my mother purchases the books, reads them, and then passes them on to me….how lucky I am….she could give them to one of my siblings….but I lucked out, plus I’m the oldest in the family.

    • Bev S, you are really lucky you have the same Cozy Mystery taste as your mom. My mom likes to tell the story that when she was growing up the only book in the house was the Bible. Thank goodness my father’s family loved to read!

      • Judy, after reading your very nice comment, I was reminded of all of the authors who I have added to my “favorite authors” list because of the wonderful Cozy Mystery readers who recommended authors/books – formally since January 2012 and informally before we started compiling the Cozy Mystery recommendation lists. I’m glad you enjoy the site!

    • Sheila, I hope that by him mentioning the Cozy Mystery genre, he will have helped many people find this genre that we all love so much. I think there are probably many people out there who just don’t know what they are missing.

  6. Wheee!!!! What a wonderful promotion of reading and a great website. I am constantly referring people to the website and maybe now they can remember it a wee bit easier. Hopefully “Cozy Mystery” will become a more popular phrase.

    • Patti S, I totally agree with you. I think the group of people we have here is an extremely (to use your wording:) nice group of people. I love that we are able to share with other Cozy lovers, and I know this sounds corny, I love that we are all able to get along.

  8. Hi there! I found your blog because I was watching this interview last night! I love Jim Parsons and the Big Bang Theory. I also adore mystery novels and check them out weekly from my library because I go through them too quickly to be able to afford to buy all the ones I read! I had no idea that the stories that I love so much are actually called “Cozy” mysteries. I am really glad to have found this site, I am hoping to be turned onto new authors here. The hard part is figuring out where to begin! If you are able to communicate with Jim Parsons at some point, it would be great to hear what authors he likes to read besides Agatha Christie.

    • Kimmie, I loved listening to him describe our favorite mystery genre. I read myself to sleep every night, also. (This is not to say that my favorite Cozy Mystery authors write boring books!)

  10. This is exciting, Danna! I knew I liked Jim Parsons and we all who read your site have very good taste. So kudos to you on the mention and discussion. Also, like him, I understand how reading at bedtime helps a lot of us wind down and relax at the end of the day. As someone who has switched to mainly tablet reading, Craig Ferguson needs to know about turning the brightness way down on a black background when reading at night. I find this actually helps me feel sleepier than reading a paper book with a bright lamp. (It also allows my husband to not have to endure a bright light as I stay up very late!)

    • Mary Joy, I much prefer my Kindle at night for the same reason you state: it doesn’t bother my husband.

    You should feel proud about what you have done for the cozy mystery genre. I have discovered new authors and have been reintroduced to others.

    • Paula, I have also been introduced to many authors from the comments that Cozy Mystery readers have made over the years. Right now, I am reading a mystery by a new-to-me author who I am so excited about that I don’t think I’m going to be able to wait until the end of the month to write about him in the monthly recommendations. He’s an author who several people have recommended over the years, and I am so glad I just “found him” >>> I’m reading Conrad Allen‘s first George Porter Dillman mystery, and so far, it is reminding me of an Agatha Christie mystery. Well written, great characters, crisp writing, very good descriptions, no superfluous sex/violence.

      What did I say?!? I knew I wasn’t going to be able to wait to tell everyone about my recent “find”!

I love TBBT so I was thrilled to find out I have something in common with Jim Parsons. I also have your website after my name on my email. It’s part of my signature.   33. I’m glad to know that the cozy-mystery field is getting noticed. Most people are just now finding out what a lot of us have known for a long time and then to find your website at the same time.

    • I totally agree with you, Donna, about the Cozy Mystery field being recognized. Years ago, I belonged to a few online mystery reading groups. I remember someone referring to books in the Cozy Mystery vein as books that “didn’t quite rate”. (Obviously, I disagreed!)

    • Kalena, I hate to admit this, but my husband had to “embed the video clip” >>> He taught me how to do it a few months ago when I did the “vocal fry” clip, but I forgot. I’m one of those people who has to do something over and over, and over again before I can “learn” a new trick.

  36. Congratulations! I hope I don’t embarrass you but I am going to toot a horn for you. I have thought for awhile now that when they give out the yearly mystery awards that you should be given a service award for all that you do for the cozy mystery genre.

    You have a wealth of information on your site. It educates and informs us about the cozy genre. I have always read mysteries but you have introduced me to authors that I was unaware of. I sometimes think that you must key fast to share all of this information you gather. You research and give us themes. Your site is very organized and well done. Even when you go on vacations, there is usually something new posted. You are very dedicated to the cozy genre and have put in hours of time and research to enhance the reading of the cozy reader. I do think you and this site deserve an award. Thank you!

  37. Your site deserves the mention, Danna, because it is the best! I’ve been tweeting links to the Hallmark channel for awhile because you should be featured on the Home and Family show. That’s just my opinion. You have a great story to tell and you deserve all the shout-outs you receive!
