Cozy Reader Questions

September 20, 2025

It’s been a while since I’ve done a post like this, so I’ve accumulated quite a few questions… unfortunately many of them are quite vague… still, hopefully we can come up with a few answers at least!

From Simon:

Hello – I am trying to locate an Author or Title of a book that had a young lady who was running a Scottish shop for a relative. If you can think of the book I would really appreciate it.

EDIT: Laura, Paige, Beverly, Rebecca, and r all suggested this could be the Scottish Emporium Series/Liss MacCrimmon Mystery Series by Kaitlyn Dunnett. Cindy thinks it might be the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mysteries by Vicki Delany. BG thinks it could be the Magic Garden Mysteries by Amanda Flower. Laner and Jill both think it could be the Scottish Bookshop Mystery Series by Paige Shelton.

From Yvonne:

I am looking for an author? In a Historical Book, a woman’s husband dies and she takes in two boys. They become friends with a Duke they all solves mysteries together.

EDIT: Jane, Cheryl, Nancy, SuzyF, Andrea, Deb, and Marjo all think this could be the Wrexford and Sloan Mystery Series by Andrea Penrose  – as Jane points out, it’s an earl, not a duke, but otherwise the details provided fit.

From Maria:

I am looking for a murder mystery series that features a male pi who is a former cop. He inherits half of a mansion that he shares with the son of the deceased who is a lawyer.

EDIT: Linda, Rebecca, and Sandy all suggested this could be the Milo Rathkey Series by D. B. Elrogg.

From Maisha:

Hi I am looking for an author or book where the main character is a landscaper or gardener and she is working on a garden project with her friend who turns out to be the killer. The end has a plot twist where her friend was manipulated to kill by someone else, but I cannot for the life of me remember the author or title of the book. If anyone knows what I’m talking about I would really appreciate being reminded.

(This is a hard one to search for as so many of the ‘clues’ are in the solution, which isn’t as written about for ‘spoiler’ reasons…)

EDIT: Ellen thinks this one could be Julia Henry‘s Garden Squad Series, Marty Wingate‘s Potting Shed Mystery Series, or Naomi Hirahara‘s Mas Arai Mystery Series.

And finally, from Janet:

I am looking for an author who is an antique dealer who has met a man and moved to either England or Scotland. I have read several of her books and have really enjoyed them.

EDIT: Roni thinks this could be the Scottish Bookshop Mystery Series by Paige Shelton. Kitty, Sprite, Jill, SuzyF, and r all think it might be the Kate Hamilton Mystery Series by Connie Berry.

(Obviously a rather vague one with many ‘maybe this is the answer!’ sort of guesses.)

PS: I don’t give individual responses to comments on this particular type of post since it would usually boil down to ‘that’s a good possible suggestion!’ or some variant of that.

EDIT: Lots of great suggestions so far! Thanks for everyone who has contributed so far!

    Hi Danna,

I think Maria might be talking about the Milo Rathkey series by D. B. Elrogg. I love this series–one of my favorites! Lots of humor, fun characters, good mysteries. Hope I’m right.

    Have a great day!

Could the last question about an antique dealer be Paige Shelton and her Scottish Bookshop Mystery Series? The first book sets the scene of the series.

Simon – you might be thinking of the Magic Garden Mysteries by Amanda Flower. Fiona travels to Scotland to take care of her godfather’s property.

For the last question, the author may be Connie Berry. She wrote a series about an antique dealer who moved to England and eventually married a policeman.

To Simon— You are probably thinking of the excellent writer Paige Shelton Who wrote a series of books about a Scottish book shop and it fits your description. The first episode is called The Cracked Spine. It has 10 books in the series. I could not wait for the next episode to appear. Shelton is a fabulous writer and the sure to keep your interest. each book highlights, a different aspect of Scottish history, culture or mythology. I hope you find them as interesting as I did. Shelton wrote other fascinating series of cosy mysteries on a range of topics. Enjoy!

I’m guessing you might want the books by Connie Berry. The first book has her going to her (deceased) husband’s place on an island in Scottland. Throughout yhe series, she develops a relationship with the detective, and they eventually marry.

From Maria – her question regarding a PI – former cop. I love this series. They just released a new Milo Rathkey Mystery book entitled “Pop-Up Dinner, Drop down Dead”. They are a Husband/wife duo who write the series, D.B. Elrogg, author. Great mysteries, however, love the humor of of characters nvolved.

Scottish Bookshop Mystery series by Paige Shelton features a woman who moves from the US to Scotland to work at a combination bookshop/antique shop. She meets a bar owner there. Does this satisfy any of the vague questions above?

The answer to Yvonne’s question may be the Wrexford and Sloan series by Andrea Penrose. The first book is Murder on Black Swan Lane. Wrexford is an earl, not a duke. But Charlotte Sloan is a widow who takes in two street urchins.

Yvonne may be thinking of Andrea Penrose’s series about Mrs. Sloan and the Earl of Wrexford. Regency era in London. She takes in two street urchins. The mysteries involve scientific subjects. They’re great!

I think Janet is remembering the Kate Hamilton series by Connie Berry. Kate is an American antiques expert who meets and falls in love with a British policeman. Present day. Lots of fun, and you learn about art, antiques, history, and even genealogy.

Serendipity! I believe have been looking for the same author and she popped up in my feed today. The author is Kaitlyn Dunnett and she writes the Liss Mac Crimmon Scottish Mystery series. She was a Scottish dancer until she was injured and came home to run her aunt’s Scottish store while her aunt toured Scotland.

    Yvonne,
I think the series you are looking for is the “Wrexford and Sloane Historical Mysteries Series” by Andrea Penrose. She was a widow who took over her late husband’s job of a political cartoonist with two young street kids under her wing. She is helped along by Lord Wrexford and they have some merry adventures in Regency London. The first book is Murder on Black Swan Lane and there are (so far) 8 books in the series. I love them.

Marilyn, I’ve been having trouble keeping ahead of new releases. Most of the older methods I used are less reliable – so many people now self-publish, and even traditional publishers don’t advertise upcoming books as much as usual. I’m trying to adjust a new method, but it’s been slow going. I’m sorry that I haven’t been able to help as much as I used to!

It also seems that the authors I follow are slower to publish – I have so many on the wish list in my ereader and they’re very far out.

        Thank you for the response.
