Cozy Mystery Little Bits of Information

June 14, 2015

I have some very good news for some of you! Here are some little morsels of information that fans of these Cozy Mystery authors will be especially be happy about seeing:

Molly Cox Bryan, author of the Cumberland Creek Mystery Series, will be writing a new Cozy Mystery series that will take place in North Carolina and will feature a craft retreat. How many of us wish we could attend the first session?

Heather Blake (aka Heather Webber) will be releasing a sixth Cozy in her Wishcraft Mystery Series. The tentative title is Gone with the Witch, and believe me, I’ll let you know when it is going to be released!

Joyce and Jim Lavene may be starting a new Cozy Mystery series called the Purple Door Detective Agency Mystery Series. I’m still not entirely sure about this, since they will be starting their new Pumpkin Patch Mystery Series in the same month (August) as the Purple Door Detective Agency series is supposed to be starting. More news about this when I get the scoop…

All of you fans of Lynn Cahoon‘s Tourist Trap Mystery Series have something to be extra happy about! Lynn Cahoon will be releasing A Story to Kill, the first Cozy in her new series called the Cat Latimer Mystery Series. The series will star an author/professor who inherits a Victorian house. And guess what she’s going to do with her converted Victorian! She’s going to turn it into a Bed and Breakfast for authors’ retreats! (See, I told you you’d be happy!)

Here’s some great news for Leann Sweeney‘s fans! Her Cats in Trouble Mystery Series has gotten the green light for the next two books in the series. Yahoo! I absolutely love to hear about our authors being able to continue their Cozy Mystery series!

At the risk of asking a terribly obvious question: This is pretty doggone good Cozy Mystery news, isn’t it?

I’m so excited but also annoyed because I want all the books to be here now in front of me! Patience is not my strong suit. Thanks for always keeping us informed!

This is a question about an author that I don’t see on your list. But then again I’m not sure what a cozy mystery is. Diane Mott Davidson.

It’s wonderful to have a guide like yours. I am especially looking for a writer, or writers, like Caroline Graham. Her Inspector Barnaby’s are terrific, as she reveals her characters, including the CID and his sidekick. Also would like to find a new Colin Dexter, i.e. Inspector Morse, or just “Morse.” Splendid police work and peopling, and in fact Dexter gives a hats-off to Dexter in one of her stories by referring to the policeman who is fond of opera and pints of bitter.

Sorry for the typo. I meant to say that Graham touts Dexter (in either “A Place of Safety” or “A Ghost in the Machine.”)

Thank you so much for this fab news – and yes it is pretty doggone good Cozy Mystery news. My Kindle and me will be looking forward to the new series by Lynn Cahoon (I love her Tourist Trap mystery series). The Molly Cox Bryan new series sounds very interesting. Would I ever like to attend the first session. Joyce and Jim Lavene – how do they keep all their series straight? How many does this make?

Sheila in CT, I’ve been asking myself the same question about the Lavenes! They must spend all of their waking moments writing Cozies!

This reader might like Caroline Graham’s “Murder in Madingely Grange” (1990) which may well be the start of this genre. The Victorian house is a site for a murder weekend, a la the 1930s, so I think this is one of the earliest “tourist-trap” mysteries.

Wow so much cozy goodness! Yes I also wonder how the Lavene’s do it, but I’m just glad they keep doing it!

Their new Purple Door Detective Agency series will begin in September with “That’s My Banshee” as the first title (its a paranormal series, but that’s all I know about it).

“Give ‘Em Pumpkin to Talk About” is the first title in the Pumpkin Patch series which is not a paranormal series.

YES IT DOES! That Joyce and Jim Lavene are very ambitious; and I think I have to take a peek at both of these series.
As always thanks again for the heads up Danna.

If as you say in your addendum regarding cozy mystery definition, authors are becoming more crude, they are in my opinion making a huge mistake. One of the main reasons I love them is that they are not vulgar or dark.

Elizabeth, not all Cozy Mystery authors have taken that route, but every once in a while I hear from a Cozy Mystery reader who is upset about certain words appearing in his/her reading material. It’s unfortunate that some of them have gone that route, though…

I agree; the surest way for an author to lose my $ as a reader is to slip over the line into vulgarity. I read Cozy mysteries because I enjoy them as they are currently defined, and I really hope they stay that way.

Stella, when I said some authors are changing, I meant that some of them have added words that would not necessarily be thought of as Cozy Mystery language.

Well, I’ve noticed a few authors touted as “cozy mystery” writers on Amazon whose offerings were more in the line of thrillers, complete with the (IMO) unnecessary ugly words as well as sometimes (again, IMO) over-descriptive sex scenes.

Honestly, I’ve come to depend on your lists here for authors I will enjoy, rather than Amazon’s recommendations any more.

Stella, I suggest you read all of the reviews before trying a new-to-you author. Some of them may include spicier language/situtaions…

I have also been wondering about Diane Mott Davidson. Have all of her Goldy Schultz mysteries & I thought that the ending of The Whole Enchilada sounded kinda like she was winding the storyline up. Hope not!

Carolyn, Diane Mott Davidson has Goldy’s Kitchen Cookbook: Cooking, Writing, Family, Life which she will be releasing, but I had read she was not going to be writing any more Goldy mysteries. I hope I’m wrong…

Betty and Stash, thank you. I don’t actually post the books on my authors’ pages until I can find either their pictures or their books. So far, I can’t find the Purple Door Detective Agency, although I have it on my tentative list of books to be released in the future.

Oops…sorry, I forgot to add that a “new-to-me” author is Janet Bolin and the Threadville series. I know it is a little older series but I am now on book three and have fallen in love with Willow, Halee, the Three Weird Mothers, Clay…and the whole town of Threadville!

I already can predict what at least three – four days of my “stay-cation” are going to look like!

I’m glad that I’ve been printing some of the authors pages that you have and checking the books off as I read them. I might look strange walking into the library with a big three ring binder but it works for me! : )
