Ellery Queen, John Creasy, & Leslie Charteris: Three "Old" Authors for the New Year…

January 6, 2009

I thought that I would start the New Year by adding (to the Cozy Mystery Site) three mystery authors who have been recommended by site readers. All three wrote their mysteries many years ago. The three authors of whom I am speaking are (as the title says) Ellery Queen, John Creasy, and Leslie Charteris.

While many people recognize the name Ellery Queen, many people are also familiar with John Creasy and Leslie Charteris, possibly without knowing it. The reason for this is that Leslie Charteris writes (“wrote”>>> but I try to do all of my postings in present tense!) The Saint Mystery Series. Some of you may remember The Saint television series from many years ago. The Saint (aka Simon Templar) is a rather dashing/debonair millionaire, who not only is a sleuth, but also a thief!

As for John Creasy, he has many pseudonyms and even more mystery (and spy) series. The pseudonyms that I am posting on the site include: J. J. Marric, M. E. Cooke, Robert Caine Frazer, Anthony Morton, Gordon Ashe, Rodney Mattheson, Patrick Gill, Brian Hope, Colin Hughes, Anthony Morton, Charles Hogarth, Richard Martin, Kyle Hunt, & Abel Mann.

As I said, a lot of people are familiar with Ellery Queen. Something I wasn’t aware of though is that Ellery Queen is a pseudonym for two cousins who write (actually “wrote”) the books and stories together. Years ago, I would get confused wondering if Ellery Queen was the author or the character of the particular series. And then there is the magazine by that same name! (Ellery Queen is the name of the main character of the mystery series written by the cousins using the pseudonym Ellery Queen… which a lot of times appears in the Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine!)

Gabriella Herkert, G. M. Malliet, & Allana Martin: Three New Authors to the Cozy Mystery Site

December 23, 2008

Here are three new authors who have been recommended to the Cozy Mystery Site by some of its readers. Thank you for telling us all about the (new-to-the-site) authors!

Gabriella Herkert:  While attending law school, Herkert became aware of a case which involved a woman who left her fortune to her cat. Looking back (years later) Herkert made this the basis of her Animal Instinct Mystery Series, which is set in Seattle.

G. M. Malliet: Malliet is a Malice Domestic Grant Winner, as well as a copywriter and journalist. She pens the Detective Chief Inspector St. Just Mystery Series, which is set in Great Britain.

Allana Martin: Martin writes the Death of a ***** Mystery Series which is set in a Texan border-town (bordering Mexico) and features Texana Jones, the owner of a trading post and her husband (Clay) who is a veterinarian.

Christopher Lane, Barbara Paul, Steve Sherman: Three New Authors to the Site…

December 9, 2008

Here are the latest three new authors who you all have recommended for the site:

Christopher Lane writes the Inupiat Eskimo Mystery Series  which features a police officer who is brought up in Anchorage and who then goes to live in a more desolate area. (Amazon’s blurp says Lane writes “for the Christian market.”)

Barbara Paul writes the Opera Mystery Series which features an early 1900s Italian tenor living in New York and the Marian Larch Mystery Series which features a New York police sergeant.

Steve Sherman pens the New England Cozy Mystery Series, which takes place in New Hampshire and features a private investigator. Sherman also authors country roads guides, as well.

Sheryl J. Anderson, Margaret Dumas, Elizabeth Eagan-Cox, and Diane Setterfield: Four New Authors to the Cozy Mystery Site

December 1, 2008

I hope to eventually get most of the recommended Cozy Authors posted, and again thank all of you for the recommended authors… I have to rely on your judgment when I add the newly recommended authors since I (obviously) haven’t had the chance to try every one of them before posting them. But, I can’t think of a better way to get new Cozy Authors on the site than to ask Cozy Mystery Site Readers to help by letting the rest of us know about new Cozy Mystery Authors!

Sheryl J. Anderson: Anderson has a very varied background: She has worked as a screenwriter, a television producer and writer, and is now teaching screenwriting, as well as writing the Molly Forrester Mystery Series which features an advice columnist (¿Dear Abby-type?) who also solves mysteries.

Margaret Dumas: Dumas writes the Charlie & Jack Fairfax Mystery Series which has been compared to Nick & Nora Charles by no less than Donna Andrews! That’s quite an endorsement!

Elizabeth Eagan-Cox: Eagan-Cox has just started the Shannon Delaney Mystery Series which features a writer in San Diego with ghostly encounters…

Diane Setterfield: Setterfield became a bestselling author when The Thirteenth Tale (her first novel) was published. She has been compared to the likes of Charlotte Brontë and Daphne du Maurier… classic/Gothic mystery…
