Agatha Christie’s (Original) Partners in Crime: The Tommy & Tuppence Mysteries – TV Shows

December 5, 2015

Agatha Christie's Partners in Crime: The Tommy & Tuppence Mysteries Let me start this entry by telling you that I thought for sure I had already written about this terrific television series. This entry is about the original Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime: The Tommy & Tuppence Mysteries which was made in the 1980s. It is a totally delightful series full of witty dialog, absolutely gorgeous and sumptuous wardrobe, and very good mysteries.

There are eleven episodes that follow the private detective duo comprised of Tommy and Tuppence. They are all based on Agatha Christie‘s Tommy & Tuppence mystery novels. I will admit to not being a fan of this series of Christie mystery novels but I love this television series. If I were to pick just two words to describe this mystery series. I would say “fun romp”.

The series starts out with Tommy & Tuppence reuniting after WWI. (No spoilers here->>> so I won’t divulge too much!) The series takes place during the 1920s, which means that Tuppence is able to wear flapper-type attire, including beautiful hats and dresses. Francesca Annis portrays Tuppence, and she’s terrific! Her portrayal brings a young exuberance to Tuppence. She makes us believe she is Tuppence, and we can see how Tuppence is a force to be reckoned with.

James Warwick portrays Tommy. At first I wasn’t quite sure if he would be convincing as someone Tuppence would enjoy being with, but by the end of the first episode, I knew he was perfect as Tommy.

Tommy and Tuppence take over the Blunt’s International Detective Agency after both Tommy & Tuppence were left unemployed after the Great War. The series was made during the 1980s – so don’t expect today’s production values. Although it lacks the bells and whistles of today’s television shows, it is a very superior television series.

My husband and I both enjoy the (original) Agatha Christie’s Partners in Crime: The Tommy & Tuppence Mysteries. I strongly recommend this Cozy Mystery television series. I especially recommend it to fans of the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. These mystery shows have the same delightful, whimsical, fun, joie de vivre as Phryne Fisher’s shows. I should mention there is a more recent series (which will be available on Netflix and is currently available on Acorn). We enjoyed the original series so much that when it’s time to revisit Tommy and Tuppence, we plan on staying with this version.

This series is available on Netflix in disc format. It is also available on Acorn.

Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas Movie – A Terrific Holiday Movie for Everyone

November 22, 2015

If  you’re looking for a short, delightful Christmas show that is perfect for the entire family, I recommend Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas. This 2014 production is based on both the 2003 hit movie, Elf, starring Will Ferrell and the Broadway musical production.

My husband and I recently watched this fun, short Christmas (43 minutes long) movie, and we both enjoyed it immensely. Although both of our children are now grown, we are sure they would have loved this movie when they were little. This of course means that this movie would have been played over and over (and over again!) in our home during the Christmas holidays.

The movie is done in an amalgamation of animation styles. All through the movie I was fascinated by the different details used in its production. I especially liked the different textures used, for example, Holly’s hair, the costumes, and the quirky facial expressions.

The story is a heart-warming Christmas tale about the importance of family. The music is catchy, fun, and up-beat. The movie uses the vocal talents of The Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons (who is terrific!), Star Wars‘ Mark Hamill, and Ed Asner, among others.

I’ve told both of my (now grown) children they should definitely watch this fun, cute Christmas movie. It truly is lots of fun for everyone.

P.S. In the past we have discussed favorite Christmas movies, and compiled quite a few on these lists:

Christmas : Favorite Classic Holiday Movies: Old, Black & White… and a Few In Color (not mysteries)

Christmas : Favorite Holiday Movies – More Recent, In Color (not mysteries)

What are your favorite Christmas movies that you find yourself watching every year during the holiday season. Please post a comment below and let us know! Thank you!

***This movie is available on Netflix in disc format.**

Mrs. Bradley Mysteries – British Television Series

October 27, 2015

Mrs. Bradley Mysteries: The Complete Series [DVD] Calling all Diana Rigg fans! Get ready to see Rigg dead-panning to the camera as only Diana Rigg can do. She is absolutely delightful as Mrs. Bradley, a middle age flapper with very modern views.

Mrs. Bradley Mysteries is a BBC production that I was fortunate to have watched years ago. It ran in Great Britain during 1998-1999, so I’m not sure when my local PBS channel aired it >>> some time around then. It was particularly fun to watch Diana Rigg as she introduced the shows (she starred) in on PBS – during her Mystery! hosting years. (Those were the days when they actually provided background information about the authors, times, ETC.)

Neil Dudgeon (lately seen as John Barnaby on Midsomer Murders) plays George, Mrs. Bradley’s chauffeur. Mrs. Bradley, with George’s help, solves crimes, and is quite a celebrity. She is known to be an excellent crime solver and a very modern thinker. She is a woman who never stops learning. She keeps up with all the events that are happening during the current times. She is a loyal friend, but values justice over friendship. Her interests include those that were thought to be only men’s interests during this time. She is not a woman who would retire with the ladies while the men smoked cigars and drank cognac in the study!

The ambiance of this series is beautiful. Diana Rigg (Mrs. Bradley) wears the most amazingly beautiful clothes. The entire wardrobe department has done a wonderful job. The 1920s was a time of opulence: sequined gowns, soft fabrics, and tuxedos were common-place for the upper echelon to wear during the evening. This was a time when people (at least in Mrs. Bradley’s aristocratic circle) dressed up for dinner >>> which was “announced.”

The sets are excellent, the props are perfect. The Rolls Royce that George and Mrs. Bradley tootle around in is a phenomenal piece of art. And, the mysteries are good, too!

The unfortunate thing about the Mrs. Bradley Mysteries is that there are so few episodes. A 90 minute pilot aired in 1998 and only four sixty minute episodes were made for their 1999 airing. I ask you: WHY only five episodes!?! These productions are so delightful. What a shame there are so few… (and while I’m asking “Why?” >>> why can’t the USA match Britain’s beautiful period pieces?)

*** This series is available on Netflix in the disc format. Also, check your libraries.
