Fall Theme Mysteries, Halloween Theme Mysteries, & Thanksgiving Theme Mysteries…

September 18, 2007

Well, it’s right about the time of year when I start to try to get my holiday/seasonal mystery books accumulated… I live down here in San Antonio, Texas, and the weather just doesn’t cooperate with my seasonal cravings. I know from my past living experiences, that it is indeed the beginning of autumn… with leaves changing their colors, and a little chill in the air as you go about your morning activities. Not so here! We are experiencing upper 80s to low to mid 90s…. (I know it sounds like sour grapes that I would actually be brazen enough to “complain” about what people consider glorious San Antonio weather…)

I have already gotten out my fall candles that give the house an aroma of cinnamon apples and pumpkin spices… but sometimes that just doesn’t cut it! It’s about this time of year that I start relying on my cozy mystery authors to bring the “autumnal chill” into my life… since the only chill I feel around here is when I’m in the frozen foods section of my local grocery store.

We moved to San Antonio fifteen years ago, after having lived in places like Colorado, Virginia, Ohio, Connecticut, Iowa, Nebraska… (etc)  At the time of our “transplant” to this area, we were surprised by the lack of trees in the housing developments. It was as if the builders simply bulldozed down everything… so that they could put the houses as close to each other as they dared. So, it was left up to us to put the trees into our yards… We decided that the Monterrey Oaks were the way for us to go… they are basically an evergreen tree… only shedding their leaves for about three weeks each year. Unfortunately, I didn’t think about how much I would miss the different colors of “normal” trees. (At the same time, I do remember the raking that was the cost of that beauty!)

Anyway, long story… to say this… I now rely on many different sources to get the feeling of the seasons I miss so much. And, one of the ways I go about getting my “fall-fix” is to read books that are set in the autumn. I may still be wearing short sleeves while reading my fall (Halloween and Thanksgiving) cozy mystery, but with my scented candles permeating the house, I can almost feel the chill of the night…

Holiday Theme Mysteries… Some Christmas Theme Mysteries & a Halloween Theme Mystery

September 9, 2007

I went to my veterinarian’s office the other day to pick up some antibiotics for our dog (again!), and I was a little startled to see their Halloween decorations already up on the shelves intermixed with various types of pet shampoos and flea/tick tablets. Although I really liked their new decorations, I wondered what the heck they were doing already displayed…. in August.

Some of you might wonder why the heck I’m already talking about Halloween and Christmas mysteries. (I haven’t yet found any Thanksgiving mysteries… or Easter, which of course is less than a year away!) But the bird who gets the worm usually is an early one….

You cannot imagine how excited (and yes, that is the correct adjective for it!) I was to find some of my very own favorite mystery authors putting out new holiday books. So far, these are the ones I have found  and added to my holiday mystery lists… only one in the Halloween Mystery list, but several in the Christmas Mystery book list.)

I am going to do this alphabetically…. and since C (as in Christmas) comes before H (you know the drill!)… here goes:

New Christmas Mystery Books:
Kissing Christmas Goodbye by M. C. Beaton (an Agatha Raisin novel)

A Carol for a Corpse by Claudia Bishop (an/a Hemlock Falls novel)

Mrs. Jeffries and the Feast of Stephen by Emily Brightwell (a Mrs. Jeffries novel)

Peppermint Twisted by Sammi Carter (a Candy Shop Mystery novel)

Sweet Revenge by Diane Mott Davidson (a Goldy Bear Catering novel)

Candy Cane Murders by Joanne Fluke (A Hannah Swensen Cookie Jar novella), Leslie Meier (a Lucy Stone novella), & Laura Levine (a Jaine Austen novella)

Shrouds of Holly by Kate Kingsbury (a Pennyfoot Hotel novel)

New Halloween Mystery Book:
Murder by the Slice by Livia J. Washburn (a Fresh-Baked Mystery novel)

I hope you are as excited by some of these holiday mystery books as I am!

Easter Cozy Mystery Book List…. Actually, Easter Mystery Book List

February 17, 2007

I finally posted my Easter Cozy Mystery Book List. I haven’t read several of the listed books, so I can’t vouch for their "coziness." So, some of the books might be less cozy and more "middle of the road" mystery.

It is difficult to believe that spring will soon be here. I know that most of us are experiencing record low temperatures right now. I have actually had to wear my "real winter" coat several times lately to walk our dog! Our truly cold days are so unusual that I haven’t had to buy a new winter coat since we moved here from Colorado fourteen years ago…

I bet that a lot of people don’t know that the movie "Chocolat" (with Johnny Depp, Alfred Molina, and Juliette Binoche) is based on a Joanne Harris cozy mystery book. I didn’t know that little piece of information until I worked on my Easter mystery book list. It is one of my favorite whimsical movies.

Anyway, I am glad to finally complete my Cozy Mystery Holiday book lists. I know I have written before about how much I enjoy experiencing the different seasons while vicariously being emerged in an author’s seasonal settings.

Holiday Mystery Books

July 4, 2006

Here it is, the Fourth of July, and I still haven’t finished Leslie Meier’s  "Star Spangled Murder." I think that this will be the first time that I didn’t finish all of my holiday-themed books on time. I have become totally obsessed with finding the book links for the mystery books on this site. Perhaps once I finish this (rather monumental endeavor) I will be able to relax and enjoy my Cozies, again.

We live in San Antonio, Texas, where one of the things I really miss is the seasons. Since we have two temperatures down here……… very humid heat or mild cold, we don’t have the beautiful autumnal colors or the powdery snowfalls that make it easy to pinpoint the different times of year. Of course, with that said, we also don’t have the endless raking of thousands of leaves or the sludgy salt build-up on streets. I rely on seasonal books to get me in the different holiday moods.

Anyway, even though I am enjoying the slow, but steady progress on my site, I am becoming totally obsessed with finishing it. So, this blog is probably not what I should be working on……………… Or, better yet, I should get off the computer right now and go enjoy some more Fourth of July cozy mystery reading. Leslie Meier’s holiday books are always a nice way for me to relax and enjoy the holidays.
