Cozy Mystery Books Recommendations – January 2013

January 26, 2013

Here it is: 2013, a brand new year!

Please tell us about a few of your very favorite Cozy Mystery reads of January 2013. This should be authors who you think the rest of us absolutely have “got to know” about, so that we can also enjoy their Cozy Mystery books. Please include WHY you enjoyed these authors.

*****

I’m going to start by recommending Margaret Grace. She writes the Miniature Mystery Series, of which I am a fan. I have to admit that I am not all caught up with the series. There are six mystery books in the series, and I am currently reading the fourth. I consider Grace’s Miniature Mystery Series a truly Cozy series. Grace has a vocabulary that is rich enough for her to be able to convey, let’s say anger, without having to rely on graphic language. Her characters are more like people to me, people who I would enjoy hanging out with.

Gerry (Geraldine) Porter is the main sleuth. She is a retired English teacher, who primarily does her sleuthing when her granddaughter (Maddie) is visiting. They have a terrific relationship, which seems very real to me.

I find the writing to flow very easily. Grace has a lot of secondary reoccurring characters, who she weaves into each book’s plot. Grace also gives us red herrings which make sense, and are not just plopped into the story line.

Margaret Grace is also known as Camille Minichino and Ada Madison. I have read (and enjoyed) all eight of Minichino’s Periodic Table Mystery Series. As a matter of fact, since I enjoyed this series so much, I thought I probably wouldn’t enjoy Grace’s Miniature Mystery Series. I find that I usually only like one series an author writes, but this time I was wrong. In fact, since I enjoy Grace’s and Minichino’s Cozy Mystery series so much, I’m planning on trying Madison’s Sophie Knowles Mystery Series.

I will add the recommended authors to this entry as they come in. (Please do not tell us about the authors you did not like.) Thank you!

Favorite Cozy Mystery Reads for 2012

December 31, 2012

Ay! 2012 is on its way out! I can barely believe a whole year has passed since this very calendar day of last year! Where has the time gone?!? I have been so lucky to have both of my adult children living so close to my husband and me. Our son is here in San Antonio, and our daughter in Austin, 75 miles away. Perhaps that is why the year seems to have flown. I truly believe that while our daughter lived in Cambridge, the years seemed to just drudge on and on. I wish they would go by faster when the goings are good, and slow down when we are content!

As this is my last entry of 2012, I thought I would end the year by posting a terrific, suggested “theme” of Lynn T:

“Since 2012 is winding down, I just had an idea for a December/January blog or discussion. Amazon always has their top books for 2012. We could list our top 5 (or less) favorite reads for 2012. Just an idea. Maybe with our monthly favorites, you feel this would be repetitious.

I would be interested in learning what were the absolute favorites of  the cozy-mystery blog readers for the year of 2012.”

I am going to start the list by saying that I have read a lot of really good Cozy Mystery books this year, as well as some real stinkers, some of which I couldn’t even keep interested in for my “50 page rule.” Yes, I’m sorry to admit it, but some of these books were full of idiotic twists, paper-thin characters, and sleuths that (and notice I didn’t say “sleuths who” – since they couldn’t have been considered fully developed “people”) decided to take it upon themselves to confront a murderer, since they were indeed the sleuths, and the author knew they would have to stick around for the next installment of the series. Good grief!!!

Anyway, to get back to Lynn T’s idea, I have read several really good Cozy Mystery books this year, but since most of them were books by authors who were already on my “favorite authors” list, I thought I would tell you about my new “find” this year. Don’t get me wrong, I have added a few new-to-me authors to my “favorites” list, but this author is someone who, I am pretty sure I would have found on my own. Since I wrote an entry about this author, I will post the entry to explain why I selected him.

Tarquin Hall: Files of Vish Puri Mystery Series (Here is an entry that explains why I picked Hall.)

So, would you tell us about your Favorite Cozy Mystery Reads for 2012, and why you picked these books or authors. Thank you!

The Best Christmas Cozy Mystery Book

November 30, 2012

Most of you know that I have a very long list of Christmas & Hanukkah mystery books on the site. In fact, the list is so long that I have had to cut it into alphabetical pages. We are so lucky to have so many holiday books available to us. While I haven’t read all of the books, I have read several of them.

Recently, I started thinking about the problem some of us might have choosing just one holiday themed mystery. Since there are so many Christmas theme mysteries on these lists, where should we begin? How can we decide which books we want to read? What’s a person to do?!?

That’s when I started thinking that we should make up a list of each of our very, very favorite holiday mystery book. Only one Christmas or Hanukkah mystery book, with each of us telling why the one Christmas or Hanukkah mystery book  is our very favorite holiday theme mystery book for this time of year.

It’s the only time of year when I read anthologies. I know, I know! I’m missing out on a lot of great introductions to many different authors, I just happen to prefer mystery novels. But as I said, this is the time of year when I read both holiday stories and novellas. So, if your one favorite mystery book is an anthology, go for it!

If someone new to holiday theme mystery books asked you for one suggestion, what would that be? I know it’s difficult! Believe me! I have one pretty strong idea about the one Christmas mystery book I would suggest, but let me think about it a little longer! Besides, I’m going to have to go “revisit” the book so that I can tell you why it would be the one I suggest.

Here are some of our favorite Christmas Mystery Books:

Marian Babson: The Twelve Deaths Of Christmas

Mignon F. Ballard: Hark! The Herald Angel Screamed

Rhys Bowen: The Twelve Clues of Christmas

Agatha Christie: The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding
The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding
on Kindle format
The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding on Nook format

Conan Doyle: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle (which can be found in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes)

Heather Graham: The Last Noel

Cyril Hare: An English Murder

Kate Kingsbury: Special Pennyfoot Hotel Mystery Series (So far there are 8 Christmas mysteries in this series.)

Charlotte MacLeod: Rest You Merry (1st in the Peter Shandy Mystery Series)
Rest You Merry on Kindle format
Rest You Merry on Nook format

Katherine Hall Page: Body in the Sleigh

Valerie Wolzien: We Wish You a Merry Murder AND ‘Tis the Season to be Murdered
