Washington, DC Visit … Gettysburg & Havre de Grace …

June 29, 2010

As I mentioned before, my husband and I went on a very short trip to visit our daughter. (She is interning in DC for the summer.) We lived out there when both our son and daughter were quite young, so we thought that it might be fun to go out and “show her around” the places we used to enjoy.

We lived in the DC area two different times. One of the times was a wonderful planned community called Columbia (in Maryland.) My husband commuted from Columbia to George Washington University for a year… which meant he had to go park his car in New Carrollton and then ride the metro downtown. That’s quite a daily commute! But, we loved being close to both the DC and the Baltimore areas. The Baltimore Aquarium is one of the finest of its kind… anyway it was (+/-) 20 years ago, and as a “young” family, we loved our trips to the Baltimore Zoo.

For this visit, we actually flew into the Baltimore airport and stayed out in that vicinity, rather than try to get a hotel in downtown DC. As long as we were renting a car, we thought we might as well commute back and forth, either by rental car or metro. We definitely saved money by renting a car VS. the price of hotels in downtown DC! (And I’m not talking about five star hotel accommodations!)

I had forgotten what it is like living in a very large-city environment… having access to wonderful transportation like the metro. [They tried to pass a metro-type of deal here in San Antonio -years ago- which was quickly defeated by a lot of people who had never experienced the joys of metro transportation. I think that it was at about the same time there was a big push toward getting our water DE-fluoridated. (That’s probably not a real word… but you probably can get the gist…)]

Anyway, back to our DC trip… It was so wonderful being in an area where you can drive less than two hours in any given direction and see something interesting.

We visited Gettysburg, Pennsylvania one day, and that was a truly emotional experience. If ever you go to the DC area, try to take the bus tour around the Gettysburg National Park. (Our tour guide is a teacher during the school year, and she was phenomenal!)

We took another day to visit a little (Maryland) town called Havre de Grace. I grew up listening to my grandmother talk about where she came from and thought that I would revisit this town, so that my daughter could get a sense of my grandmother. It is a beautiful town on the Susquehanna River – which flows into the Chesapeake Bay. We truly enjoyed the day.

As you can see, we didn’t do the “usual” things that people do when visiting the DC area, but, we did have an UNusually good time going off of the beaten path; immersing ourselves in both the history of our nation and the history of our family.

Miss Marple – The Secret of Chimneys – Location / Setting … Hatfield House

June 21, 2010

Hatfield House is the location used for the Miss Marple episode called The Secret of Chimneys:

The Old Palace was the home of Elizabeth I when she was a young child. Elizabeth’s heir, James I, traded the Old Palace and its grounds for Robert Cecil’s family home. Subsequently, Hatfield House was built by Robert Cecil, the first Earl of Salisbury. Today, the 7th Marquess and Marchioness of Salisbury call it home.

Hatfield House, located north of London, is a huge estate which provides all sorts of beautiful scenery – so important in portraying the feeling of a British aristocratic settings. With a lake, formal gardens, topiaries, a church, cottages, houses, and of course, the beautiful mansion, Hatfield House must have seemed like a dream-come-true for producers of this particular Miss Marple episode. And, of course, the house’s interior includes the exact type of furniture one expects from these period piece shows… plenty of chandeliers and tapestries, not to mention the beautiful furniture!

Here is the location NOT used for the Miss Marple episode called The Secret of Chimneys:

The setting is a Gothic mansion called Knebworth House in Stevenage, which is located 29 miles north of London. It has belonged to the Lytton family since 1490. At one time, it was the home of Edward Bulwer Lytton, a Victorian politician who was also a novelist and playwright. He is famous for the quote: “The pen is mightier than the sword”.

Knebworth House has been used as the location / setting in many different television shows and movies, as well as a location for rock concerts. Here is a list of some of the other places you may have seen Knebworth House:

Anastasia – 1956
The Avengers, episode Invasion of the Earthmen – 1968
The Big Sleep – 1978
The Essential Mike Oldfield – 1980 – Remember the phenomenal music in the movie The Exorcist?!?
The Great Muppet Caper – 1981
The Shooting Party – 1985
Batman – 1989
Live at Knebworth – 1990
The Canterville Ghost – 1996
The Wings of the Dove – 1997
Jane Eyre – 1997
Eyes Wide Shut – 1999
Led Zeppelin DVD – 2003
Robbie Williams Live at Knebworth – 2003
Foyle’s War, episode Enemy Fire – 2004
Marple, episode What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw – 2004
Batman Begins – 2005
Jonathan Creek, episode The Grinning Man – 2009
The King’s Speech – 2010 (Not yet released, stars Colin Firth)

These are just a few of the television, movie, documentary events that have been filmed at the Knebworth House. I posted the events that might be of most interest to Cozy Mystery site readers.

Laptop Frustration…

June 14, 2010

I just got back from a rather quick trip out to Washington, DC to visit my daughter. She is interning out there for ten weeks, so my husband and I decided to go out to our old stomping grounds and visit her.

In the past, whenever I left town, I would write a few entries and they would automatically post on the designated dates I had chosen. But this time I decided that I would just use my daughter’s laptop and write a few entries while I was out there. Since it was a very short trip (we left Thursday AM and returned Monday AM), I thought I would only write two entries while out there.

Yikes! Her laptop has a very sensitive keyboard! Once I finished typing the rather short entry from June 12, I decided that I could simply not try to post another entry. That little, itty, bitty entry was quite a confusing, disorienting process for me.

I came back home knowing that I would never give up my mouse… I would absolutely never want to deal with a laptop again. I am simply the old dog-type of person who is happier when able to use out-dated technological gadgets that I am used to. Give me a clunky “normal” computer any time!

E. F. Benson… Queen Lucia… Again!

June 12, 2010

I’ll be writing a longer entry on Monday, but thought I would quickly write to say that I’m having a fantastic time. (More on that after the weekend…)

I am listening to the first book of the E. F. Benson Mapp and Lucia NON mystery series… Queen Lucia (narrated by Nadia May) and I am absolutely loving it! I know that I have raved about this particular NON mystery series many times before, but I must warn you that it is somewhat dated… having been written in the early 1920s. As I’ve said before, E. F. Benson‘s series is the only series that I have read several times (and plan on reading even more times in the future!) and each time I read it (or in this case listen to it) I discover new things.

Must go… Will write later...
