Enjoying December with All Its Preparations

December 5, 2014

December14111111115868798I have been waiting patiently for December to begin. Well, I guess it has been more like IMpatiently! Two months ago MJ wrote a couple of comments that caught my eye. I wanted to showcase her comments during December, since most of us like to do special things around our houses during December. You know, things like decorating a tree, or baking cookies >>> perhaps from a recipe out of one of our Cozy Mystery authors’ culinary mysteries!

MJ’s comment from October 15:

Autumn is my favorite season, too. I live in an area where we can enjoy fall and all its glorious colors. You should see my house! I have LOTS of fall decorations. But, I believe we had this discussion a year ago…………

MJ’s comment from October 16:

I’m obviously veering off-topic AGAIN……….But, I put up my fall decorations right after Labor Day and leave them up until after Thanksgiving, so I can get the maximum enjoyment out of them. I even have 4 different quilts/bedspreads for the bed to ‘change’ with the seasons! I REALLY like the ‘fall’ bedroom. I probably put up more fall decor than xmas decor. Fanatic?……..perhaps.

MJ’s comment from October 17:

I also change the bathrooms seasonally, putting in different shower curtains and towels for fall, winter, and spring/summer in two bathrooms.

Also wanted to mention (since I am so-o-o-o-o far off topic), there is a WONDERFUL Pumpkin Curry soup recipe at the Nestle website. It’s great for the fall season and is easy, easy easy. Even those that don’t like pumpkin love this soup. The curry makes it pop (without over powering it)!

Very Best Baking by Nestle: Pumpkin Curry Soup

Another yummy/tasty new fall item (at least new to me) is Pepperidge Farm’s Caramel Apple Bread and also their Pumpkin Spice Bread — both are so-o-o-o good! They even make great french toast.

Well………at least the foods are ‘fall’ related!!

Most people are probably done reading this particular entry, so these fall food suggestions are probably for naught.

Nope, MJ, your suggestions are not for naught! (And, I think Pumpkin Curry soup sounds great for the winter months as well!)

Here’s my question for ALL of you: Do you have some delicious food items like MJ’s Pepperidge Farm’s breads you would share with us? Or is there a special recipe like MJ’s Nestle’s Pumpkin Curry soup you wouldn’t mind telling us about?

CBS Cancels “The Millers”

November 21, 2014

I’m going to tell you right up front: I’m bummed! Big Time!

I have written before about a fall ritual I perform every year. You would think, it being an autumnal ritual, that it would have something to do with hot cider, pumpkins, or sitting by a blazing fire while enjoying a cup of hot chocolate. Nope! It has to do with my television viewing.

Every year I “study” the new fall television roster and set up my DVR to record each of the new shows that look interesting to me. I then try all of the shows. I have to be honest, I don’t make it through the entire show with most of them. A lot of the time, ten minutes is enough to give me the flavor of the show. However, every year I hold out the hope that there will be one or two new shows that I think are so good that I stay with them.

I had a few finds last year. However The Millers is the only one that the networks chose to keep on during the entire first season. Yes, I am like the Kiss of Death for the shows I think are good. It almost seems inevitable for my this-show’s-OK to be taken off the air after only a few episodes. I could almost become a predictor of shows that will be cancelled >>> by simply thinking the show is good!

As I mentioned, The Millers was one of the shows I enjoyed from last year’s fall line-up. Of course I should have been able to predict that this show was not going to remain on. >>> There were no push-up bras being worn, no smart-alecky kids talking back to the adults, nor any “adult double entendres.”

Instead, the show focused on an extended family. It revolved around a newly divorced somewhat Narcissistic brother (portrayed as only Will Arnett can!) who is a reporter for the local news. He happens to love his younger sister (another right-on portrayal by Jayma Mays). The younger sister is married to a man (Nelson Franklin is perfect as this out-to-lunch guy) who was brought up in a commune by his hippy parents. (Need I say more about the husband?!?) The brother helps his sister and her family out financially, not because he has to, but because there is obviously a sibling love between them.

To the horror of these two siblings, their parents come to town, telling them of their imminent divorce. The father (played beautifully by Beau Bridges) moves in with the daughter, and the mother (played brilliantly by Margo Martindale) moves in with the son.

I enjoyed this show so much that I really looked forward to seeing it again this fall. However, I noticed that there had been a huge change in the show this season. Hmmm… It was somewhat of a mystery to me that the producers would have changed something that for me, was not broken. That’s when I went to the internet, Googled “The Millers cancelled” and, to my surprise found out this show has been cancelled!

A show I discovered this fall is Marry Me. I think Casey Wilson and Ken Marino are absolutely adorable as a newly engaged couple. The rest of the cast is also very good >>> and it’s a real treat to see JoBeth Williams playing Ken Marino’s mom. Having said all this, I feel like I’m warning you. I hope me liking the show doesn’t mean NBC will cancel it!

Are there any new shows from this fall’s line-up that you think are so good you’d like to tell us about it/them? If so, please post a comment!

Thank You to Our Armed Forces on Veteran’s Day (& Every Day!)

November 11, 2014

veteran'sdayI hope many of you are off from work today and are able to take some time to think about the brave men and women who are serving and who have served in the armed forces. This is a day to thank them, because they are the reason we live in the country we do.

When I was quite young, my father served in the Air Force and later, my husband was also in the Air Force. I was fortunate to have lived over-seas while both my father, and then my husband were stationed in other countries. Our experiences have provided me with many wonderful memories, but I can also remember times when there were political problems in those countries.

On Veteran’s Day I reflect on how lucky we are to be living here, and how lucky we are to have men and women who are willing to serve in the armed forces. To me, it’s not just a day off from work, it’s a day of celebration of our freedom and a day for thanks to those whose sacrifices made and continue to make it possible.

Thank you to all of the men and women who make our country such a wonderful place to live!

Are You a Holiday Cozy Mystery Fan? If So, When (and Which!)?

October 15, 2014

halloween1111111560780We have finally had our second cool day here in San Antonio! Of course, this doesn’t mean it will continue to be cool, which is why I am so ready for holiday Cozy Mysteries! Those of you who have been with me for a while know that I read Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Cozies only during their corresponding holidays. And since I’m a stickler for reading my Cozy Mysteries in their chronological order >>> I’m way behind with some of my favorite Cozy Mystery authors. Sometimes this means I have to wait almost a whole year to read the next book in a favorite Cozy Mystery series!

thanksgiving1111116878990-0With this in mind, I thought I would ask: How early do you start reading the holiday Cozy Mysteries in your ToBeRead pile/queue? What I mean is: Do you wait until the beginning of December, mid-December, or (if you’re an especially fast reader) the end of December to start reading your Christmas Cozies? (You can substitute Christmas/December with Halloween/October or Thanksgiving/November.)

christmas333346997Also >>> which holiday Cozy Mysteries do you prefer: Halloween, Thanksgiving, or Christmas? And, (Good grief! I’m making this into a 3-part question which is much more complicated than it needs to be!) would you tell us about one or two favorite Cozy Mysteries that are set during that holiday?

Thank you! (I’m really looking forward to reading your comments!)
