Approve Spam? I Think Not!

August 26, 2007

Some of you who have written comments on this blog might wonder why your comments don’t appear immediately. Well, do 2,199 current spams explain the problem?!? That is literally how many spams I have right now that my computer firewall (or whatever it’s called) has caught. Thank goodness for those computer aids that make our lives a little easier!

When I started allowing comments on my blog page, I had no idea that there would be so much spam. You name it, I have gotten it! From all types of medications to other "products," I have had literally hundreds of spams. I am absolutely amazed at what these spam machines are sending out. I usually just "delete all," but sometimes I feel like I should skim through the lists to make sure a verified comment isn’t going to be tossed out with the spam garbage.

And, by "garbage," I mean just that!

What is scary about this is that if a cozy mystery site can get this much unsolicited, unwanted, unread, and sometimes uncivilized mail, I can only imagine what types of things are going to unsuspecting children.

My children are both very much more computer savvy than I am. They both began using computers when they were toddlers… Ted E. Bear, Sesame Street, and Mother Goose’s Nursery Rhymes bring back such wonderful memories for me. Since I was able to supervise their time at our ONE computer back then, I knew that they were "protected." Twenty years ago, spam didn’t seem to be a problem, though. I guess that they hadn’t yet made programs that could shoot out thousands of garbage mail items at the click of a button. I am glad that both of our children grew up then, and not now, with all of these computer-generated mailings. I am guessing that all of this spam is a nightmare for parents of young children…

Anyway, as usual, I started writing to tell you about the "approve comment" button that I engage before allowing a comment to go on my site. And, the "delete all spam" button that I also use. It does seem a shame that companies are clearly benefiting from their spam tactics… I am assuming that if no one clicked on the spam items, they would quickly see that they aren’t profitable, and we would all have to buy less firewall technology… I wish I could just "Make it so!"

Do You Really Use Peoples' Reviews?!?

August 25, 2007

I know that I have mentioned going to Amazon, Netflix, and other web sites to read reviews by people just like you and me. I spend time looking up an author before I start reading his/her series, and what better place to get peoples’ opinions than those types of sites? Amazon and Netflix reviews help me make decisions on both books and movies. (As well as several blogs which provide reviews that I trust. I also visit the author’s website, and do a general website search for the author before I decide whether or not I want to "invest my time" reading a new author.)

I get cozy mystery author recommendations from the site’s viewers from time to time, and some of the authors who have been recommended, well, I just can’t believe I missed them! When I started this site, I only included authors who I had read, or authors who came recommended by my cozy mystery reading friends. Now, though, I have been very lucky to have gotten some really great author additions from the site’s viewers. Authors who, after I take a look at, look like authors I will enjoy spending time with…

But… be FOREWARNED…

Once you have looked at a lot of reviews, you will possibly find a pattern. By this, I mean, you might see the same reviewers touting almost every book that you look up! I know this sounds impossible…. but, let me assure you, it happens.

There is one particular reviewer who comes to mind… Someone whose name I won’t reveal, but if I see the name with a review, I just skip right on to the next review. This particular reviewer has, if I am able to do the math right…. well over 14,000 reviews on Amazon. That’s a whole lot of books, and a whole lot of reviews! I’m OK with someone reading that many books… I actually think it’s great! But it seems to me (and a few of my friends) that almost every review this particular person has posted for a book has received a five (out of five) star rating. I say "almost every," since I have a seen a very small percentage of four star ratings…. I consider the four star rating from this particular reviewer to be the kiss of death for that book!

The nice thing, of course, is that the reviewer is putting a positive spin on the books, which will help get the book into more people’s hands. (And remember what Thumper’s mom said about saying only positive things!) The bad thing (for me, anyway) is that when I look at reviews, I hope to glean some information that will be useful to me. I don’t want a sugar-coated look at a book… ("Just the facts, ma’am.") I can’t believe that almost every book this reviewer has read deserves a five star rating. And, I can honestly say that I have never seen this reviewer give a three star rating. But possibly, the author of a book garnering a three star review from that reviewer would have the review pulled off of the site immediately… I certainly would!

I realize that everyone has different tastes in their reading likes and dislikes, but I have seen some five star ratings from this reviewer on books I simply couldn’t recommend to anyone! If four stars is the lowest I have seen this reviewer give, then imagine the schlock-of-a-book the three star rating books must be… if there are actually any three star ratings. (Of course, I haven’t seen every review by this person, so I could be wrong… there might just be a three star tucked in every once in a while.

Anyway…

You will continue to hear me talk about "my reviews" that I use, but remember, even after I read the reviews, I use a little common sense in making my decision to either get a book/movie, or not.

I'm Back…. I Think!

August 20, 2007

Well, first of all, let me say that I had a wonderful time with my daughter on our trip through the northeastern part of the U.S., and the adjoining Canadian area. Niagara Falls is without a doubt, one of the highlights that the U. S. has to offer…. (Of course, Canada has the same wonderful Falls!)

We went on the boat that took us up close to the Falls, and it truly was spectacular. I plan on taking my husband back out that way once he retires, which will be in a few years. (Once both our daughter and son are finished with college…)

I was going to try to write a blog when I got back from vacation…. but I found that I was very behind with some of life’s commitments. When I finally had time to write…. I was off to the hospital for major surgery… from which I am mending. So, I plan on spending some time writing my blogs and working on my author lists.

***** ***** ***** By the way…. before I forget….. if you get the TCM channel (Turner Classic Movies)……… I know that this is short notice…..***** ***** ***** Tuesday, August 21…. 1:30-3:30 AM (Central Time)….. MRS. POLLIFAX: SPY with Rosalind Russell and Darren McGavin. I haven’t seen it yet, so can’t vouch for it… but anything with Rosalind has absolutely got to be good. And, if you are reading this blog…. you know you can’t get much cozier than Mrs. Pollifax!

Anyway, I should be back to writing my blogs on a more regular schedule now that I am home… Go set up your TIVO, ReplayTV, VCR, DVD Recorder, or just set your alarm clock! Mrs. Pollifax will be on television in just a few hours!

Patricia Cornwell… I know she's not cozy, but still….

August 3, 2007

Years ago, when I first started using the internet, I joined a group of mystery readers who only read novels by Patricia Cornwell. At that time, I truly enjoyed Patricia Cornwell, even though she was not at all cozy!

As with most reading groups that only follow one author, the group fizzled out. At the time, Cornwell simply wasn’t able to keep up with our group’s demand… even though she was putting out one Kay Scarpetta book a year. I don’t mean that I think that a year is too short a time for an author to be able to write a novel, I just mean that for a group to only talk about that limited a number of books, it became a little tedious. Actually, I left the reading group before the group disbanded completely…

There were two reasons I stopped reading Patricia Cornwell’s novels:

1. Lucy, her niece, simply started grating on my nerves. Anytime Lucy appeared in the book, I knew that I was going to be in for some major complaining and whining. I found myself thinking things like: "Grow up!" "Get over it!" and "Get over yourself!" whenever Lucy came to visit her aunt, or even when she called her. I could have put up with Lucy had Lucy and Kay not been as close as they were…unfortunately, Lucy was around a lot!

2. The final straw…. For those of you readers who have never read a Kay Scarpetta novel, the books revolve around Kay, a chief medical examiner.  I know that the books are not intended to be cozy, but, believe me, I have read a lot of books that aren’t cozy. It seemed to me that Cornwell was trying too hard to impress her readers with new forensic details. Since she was writing so many books with so many forensic details, it seemed to me that she just had to keep pushing the envelope further to come up with something totally new. And, at one point, those "totally new" details just seemed superfluous to me… as if the more gross and gruesome the details could be, the more respect we were supposed to have for Kay. (I won’t get into details, since this is a cozy site, but believe me… I will never look at my large soup/stew pots the same way!)

I know that Cornwell has many, many fans out there, and that I am definitely in the minority. But, really, unless I’m training to become a forensic examiner, then spare me the most gruesome of gross details!
