Mystery Book Recommendations – March 2015

March 28, 2015

Spring is here! This means the weather is improving drastically, so much so that a lot of us will spend more time outside enjoying the spring-like weather, thus (possibly) reducing our Cozy Mystery reading time. If the gorgeous weather truly does cut down on our reading time, then it stands to reason that we will want to be even more selective when choosing which Cozies we read!

It’s at this time that I ask you to please tell us about a particularly good Cozy Mystery you read in March 2015. Also, please tell us why you think this Cozy Mystery book stands out amongst all the other good Cozies you read during March. If you tell us about more than one really stand-out-above-the-rest Cozy, please put the one you enjoyed the very most at the top of your list, or at least let us know which one is your very most favorite.

I’m going to start by recommending Rita Lakin‘s Gladdy Gold Mystery Series. This is one of my favorite Cozy Mystery series, and because I know it has a limited amount of books (7 total), I know that if I rush through them, it will be a case of And Then There Were None! So I take very long breaks between the books.

Rita Lakin has a background in television, both as a producer, creator, and writer. I’m glad she decided to write these Cozies!  Her humorous series focuses on Gladdy Gold, who along with her sister and friends at a Florida retirement community, solves crimes. Gladdy is such a good sleuth that she starts her own private detective agency. Gladdy doesn’t do her sleuthing alone, the other ladies all play important roles in the solving of crimes. The relationships of the women play a big part in why I enjoy the series so much. Rita Lakin has also been able to fill the retirement community with secondary characters who co-mingle with the ladies and the crimes. (Hope that makes sense!) All of the characters are believable to me. I can only hope to be as spry as some of them when I hit the retirement community age!

Rita Lakin’s writing is crisp and easy to read. The sleuths are all smart, although a lot of that is because Gladdy keeps an eye on things, and pretty much directs all of their efforts. On the whole, the other ladies don’t seem to mind Gladdy taking over all of the time, and actually seem to depend on Gladdy to be the voice of reason.

Please do not tell us about the Cozy/Cozies you read that you did not like.

Carolyn Hart Has Reconsidered, Annie & Max Will Stay at Death on Demand Bookstore!

March 24, 2015

Guess what Marla, a Cozy Mystery reader, just told me! OK, so the title of this entry might be a big hint…

An hour ago, Carolyn Hart posted this message on her Facebook page:

Annie and Max are back. Annie and Max looked me in the eye and said, “Don’t even think about it!” I realized I’d miss them too much. So I changed my mind and hope to write their 26th adventure as soon as Bailey Ruth persuades a lovelorn ghost to climb the shining stairs to Heaven. My best- Carolyn

So, we can all breath a big sigh of relief! It doesn’t matter if Annie and Max “Don’t Go Home” quite yet, but either way, they’ll be around for a while so that a whole lot of Cozy Mystery readers can continue to enjoy them!

Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel Will Air “A Bone to Pick: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery” (Charlaine Harris)

March 23, 2015

Guess what I just found out! (You know I’m not good at keeping mystery-related secrets!)

On Saturday, April 4, 2015 A Bone to Pick: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery movie will be showing on the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel and the Hallmark channel. That’s right! Aurora Teagarden >>> as in the sleuth lots and lots of us love! Charlaine Harris wrote the Aurora Teagarden Mystery Series, way back before her Sookie Stackhouse saw the light of day!

So, go set up your DVRs as soon as you can! Aurora Teagarden is back!

Here’s the information I found on the Hallmark Movies and Mysteries channel website:

“A Bone to Pick: An Aurora Teagarden Mystery
Librarian Aurora Teagarden is known around her small town as a master sleuth. When her friend Jane unexpectedly dies and leaves Aurora everything in her will, she also leaves a troubling murder mystery. It is up to Aurora to piece together the clues and solve the murder before she becomes the next victim. Stars Candace Cameron Bure, Marilu Henner and Alexa Doig.”

P.S. This is going to be a movie series!

P.P.S.S. I just checked and it will be airing on the regular Hallmark channel at the same time!

Best First Cozy Book in a New Cozy Mystery Series…

March 22, 2015

First PlaceI got a letter from MJ with a great idea for a blog entry! It’s a spin on something we do, but with a better focus. She says it better than I can, so here are some portions of her letter:

… How about the ‘best FIRST in a series cozy by either a new author or an established author with a new series in the previous year?’…

Included in that selection might be – ‘does it have potential to be a long running series and why?’  This would also have to be a ‘series’ book, not a stand alone.

I thought of this a couple of weeks ago as I read an excellent new ‘first in series’ book.  Then I read another which I thought was even better.  Yesterday I just started a third new book that looks like it has ‘potential’ – I can’t decide that until I finish it, though.  I always put these books in my monthly recommendations.  But I thought it would be interesting and informative to blog readers if we singled out just one new series.   That will be tough for me to do, however, because I’ve read several good first books this past year!!!…

I love this idea, since we’ll be able to see which of the new Cozy Mystery series that have recently been started look like real winners and will be around for a while.

So please tell us about the best first book in a Cozy Mystery series that you read that was published in 2014 or 2015. As usual, please tell us why you think this series has a great future, and please limit this to only the one best first Cozy in the new Cozy Mystery series.

Thank you!
