Sandi Ault, Kathi Daley, Gale Deitch, & Jill Marie Landis : Four New Mystery Authors on the Cozy Mystery Site

January 17, 2014

I have been busy getting eight new authors ready to take their places on the Cozy Mystery site. These are authors who you all have told me about. Some of you have recommended these authors and you have told me they belong on the site. So, here goes!

Sandi Ault     Ault writes the Wild Mystery Series. This series features an agent with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in Taos. Her name is Jamaica Wild, and all of the mysteries in the series start with the word “wild”. (Incidentally, Ault is a bestselling author who has won the Mary Higgins Clark Award, and several other awards.)

Kathi Daley     Daley writes the Zoe Donovan Mystery Series. Those of you who like your mystery books with recipes, you will pleased to know that you can find them in these books. Zoe is an animal rehabilitation officer who sleuths with her dog, Charlie. Daley also writes the TJ Jensen Paradise Lake Mystery Series, which features a high school teacher/sleuth in Nevada. (I will be adding Daley to the list of authors who feature holidays in their mysteries.)

Gale Deitch     Deitch pens the Trudie Fine Mystery Series. Trudie is the co-owner of a catering company in Washington, D.C. Those of you who enjoy recipes will find that Deitch includes them in her mystery books.

Jill Marie Landis     Landis writes the Tiki Goddess Mystery Series. This series features Em Johnson, a newly divorced woman who finds herself in need of money. Em takes a job as the manager of the Tiki Goddess Bar. She is assisted in her sleuthing by the Hula Maidens, a dance troupe of senior ladies. (I was told that the Tiki Goddess books are funny and clean.) Landis also writes the Twilight Cove Mystery Series which is a contemporary romantic suspense series.

Mystery Books Theme: Main Sleuth Who Is a Nurse OR Midwife…

January 14, 2014

You can’t very well have a sleuth who is a doctor without a great sleuth who is a nurse to accompany him/her. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with the sleuths who are midwives, since the list is so short. So, I decided to lump midwife sleuths in with the nurse sleuths.

Here is a list of authors who are on the Cozy Mystery site who happen to write series which feature nurse sleuths as well as midwife sleuths :

Mystery Books Theme: Main Sleuth Who Is a Nurse…

Lori Avocato: Pauline Sokol Mystery Series (Ex-Nurse)

Susan Bernhardt: Kay Driscoll Mystery Series – Kay Driscoll is a retired nurse who volunteers at the local free clinic.

Frances Brody: Kate Shackleton Mystery Series – “The Kate Shackleton books by Frances Brody have a protagonist who was a nurse in WWI. It’s not an enormous part of all the books but it is mentioned several times and she does work part time as a nurse to solve a mystery in one of her volumes.”

Candy Calvert: Darcy Cavanaugh Cruise Mystery Series

Christine Green: Kate Kinsella Mystery Series (Ex-Nurse)

Nancy Herriman: Maggie McDonald Mystery Series (nurse in 1860s San Francisco)

Mary Roberts Rineheart: Hilda Adams Mystery Series

Annelise Ryan (aka Allyson K. Abbott & Beth Amos): Mattie Winston Mystery Series (Ex-Nurse)

P.B. Ryan: Gilded Age Mystery Series

Charles Todd: Bess Crawford Mystery Series

Rebecca Tope: Drew Slocombe Mystery Series (Ex-Nurse)

Christine Trent: Florence Nightingale Mystery Series – Florence is a nurse in England during the 1850s.

Jill Paton Walsh: Imogen Quy Mystery Series

Mary V. Welk: Caroline Rhodes Mystery Series

Sharon Wildwind: Pepperhawk/Avivah Rosen Mystery Series

Jacqueline Winspear: Maisie Dobbs Mystery Series (nurse in WWI)

Mystery Books Theme: Main Sleuth Who Is a Midwife…

Margaret Lawrence: Hannah Trevor Mystery Series

Edith Maxwell (aka Maddie Day & Tace Baker): Carriagetown Mystery Series (Quaker midwife in late 1800s Massachusetts)

Victoria Thompson: Gaslight Mystery Series

Mystery Books Theme: Main Sleuth Who Is a Doctor…

January 10, 2014

A while ago I got a few requests for a theme that would include medical sleuths. I started the list way back then, but for some reason I got side-tracked with other things. Recently someone asked for a medical mysteries theme, which I have finally gotten organized. This list includes sleuths from the Cozy Mystery site who are doctors. (The next theme I will be posting will be sleuths who are nurses and midwives, followed by sleuths who are simply in the medical field, but are not primarily nurses, midwives, or physicians.)

Here is a list of authors who are on the Cozy Mystery Site and who happen to write series which feature doctor / physician sleuths :

Jo Bannister: Clio Rees Mystery Series

J.S. Borthwick: Deane & McKenzie Mystery Series

Arthur Conan Doyle: Sherlock Holmes Mystery Series (Dr. Watson… not “main sleuth” but still very important!)

Jonathan Gash: Clare Burtonall Mystery Series

Lee Goldberg: Diagnosis Murder Mystery Series

Susanna Gregory (aka 1/2 of Simon Beaufort): Chronicles of Matthew Bartholomew Mystery Series

Tessa Harris: Dr. Thomas Silkstone Mystery Series

Robin Hathaway: Dr. Fenimore Mystery Series

Robin Hathaway: Dr. Jo Banks Mystery Series

Paula Paul (aka Paula Carter): Dr. Alexandra Gladstone Mystery Series

Caroline Roe (aka Medora Sale): Chronicles of Isaac of Girona Mystery Series

Lis Wiehl & Pete Nelson: East Salem Trilogy (Forensic Psychiatrist)

Favorite Cozy Mystery Books for 2013

January 4, 2014

We started the “Favorite Cozy Mystery Books for the Year” last year when Lynn T proposed that we list our very, very favorite-est (my words, not hers!) mysteries of the year. We already do our monthly favorite mysteries, so these Favorite of the Year should be the very best of the best we have read.

I have read many good Cozy Mystery books this year. I have also read some not-so-good Cozy Mysteries. (Haven’t we all?!?) I have mentioned several of the authors who are on my Favorite Authors list. But who wrote my very favorite mystery read of the year?

When I was talking to my husband about this entry, I asked him how I could ever pick just one mystery book and say it was my very favorite of the year. I have enjoyed so many, how would I be able to pick just one? I then told him about several of my favorite authors who I have read this year. Since this list is not comprised of just brand new authors who started being published this year, it includes ALL Cozy Mystery authors. Hmmm… That’s a whole lot of authors! He then asked me who I thought is my very favorite Cozy Mystery author, to which I responded, Agatha Christie.

Christie is one of the very few authors who I have read, re-read, and plan to re-read again. She was a formidable story-teller. Her characters always ring true to me. There’s a reason her books are still so popular; although written many years ago, they seem almost ageless. She is able to describe/depict the very nature of people and their quirks. Her writing style is flawless and flows so easily. Her mysteries are perfect.

So, I will nominate Agatha Christie’s (1957) What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw (aka 4:50 from Paddington) since it is the last Miss Marple mystery I have read by this phenomenal author.

So please tell us about your Favorite Cozy Mystery Read for 2013, and why you are picking this book or author. Thank you!

As usual with these types of entries, I will add the books/authors who you all comment about to the list:

Favorite Cozy Mystery Reads for 2013:

Ellery Adams (aka Jennifer Stanley, J.B. Stanley, & 1/2 of Lucy Arlington: Poisoned Prose

Nancy Atherton: Aunt Dimnity and the Lost Prince

Josie Belle (aka Jenn McKinlay & Lucy Lawrence): Buried in Bargains

Agatha Christie: 4:50 from Paddington (aka What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw)

Agatha Christie: By the Pricking of My Thumbs

Sheila Connolly: Buried in a Bog

Amanda Flower (aka Isabella Alan): A Plain Scandal

Mary Lou Kirwin: Killer Librarian

Joyce and Jim Lavene (aka J.J. Cook & Ellie Grant): Harrowing Hats

Jenn McKinlay (aka Josie Belle & Lucy Lawrence): Cloche and Dagger

Louise Penny: How the Light Comes In

Dana Stabenow: Bad Blood

Heather Webber (aka Heather Blake): The Root of All Trouble
