Castle: New Show on Monday Nights, ABC

March 12, 2009

I just watched a new show called “Castle” and enjoyed it so much that I took a look at my Replay machine to see if they will be re-airing the pilot. The good news is that they are, on Saturday at 9:00 PM (our local Texas time).  So if you are at all interested, you can check it out!

ABC is the network that is carrying this very clever mystery show, and I sure hope there are enough people who tune it so that it remains on the air. I know that it is difficult to start up a show in the middle of the season… By then, people already know their weekly television viewing schedules.  This Monday night show is well-worth “shaking it up” and changing your Tivo/Replay/HD Box/VCR programming.

Anyway… If you have seen my TV & Movie entries, then you should know that I am a big Firefly fan. Castle stars Nathan Fillion (Firefly’s captain) as the main character of the show… a mystery book author who hangs out with “real life” big-name mystery authors over poker. Yes, for those of you who watched the show on Monday, those two men discussing killing off their main characters (Scully and Alex) in their mysteries are Stephen J. Cannell and James Patterson. (I could not get a good view of the woman at the poker table, and I hope that I’m not stepping on anyone’s toes by saying that I don’t know if she is a mystery author or not.)

Stana Katic stars as the police detective who is the basis of the main character of Castle’s new mystery series, which of course means that he has to shadow her for an undetermined amount of time. And, for all of you Falcon Crest fans, Susan Sullivan plays Castle’s mother… a wonderful character who I hope we get to see a lot more!

If you missed Monday’s pilot… you might want to check out Saturday night’s rerun so that you can start enjoying what I hope is a very long-running mystery show!

PS>>> My husband just asked me why he didn’t get to watch Castle… So, I will be taping the rerun this Saturday night!

I loved Castle too! As far as I know, the woman at the poker table wasn’t an author. At least if she is, I didn’t recognize her name in the opening credits like I did Cannell’s & Patterson’s.

    Hi Tori,

Wasn’t the pilot good? Didn’t you love the part where the two guest authors sat discussing what they were discussing? (I won’t give anything away by talking about what they were talking about!) I hope the show is able to incorporate mystery authors every week. Loved it!

    Hi Vickie…

As a fan of Firefly… I know you will love seeing Fillion in this new show. (Also, thanks for telling us about Eureka. We are fans of the show now… albeit late-comers… Better late than… )

I loved Castle and never heard of the actor until I saw this show. I hope it gets picked up for another season. I didn’t recognize the woman either.

    Hi Dru,

If the four of us are any indication >>> Castle will be picked up. (Here’s hoping!)

I hope you all are able to catch the show… I am looking forward to watching it again with my husband.

I also hope that they don’t revamp the show to make it more… “snazzy” (for the lack of a better word!)

I liked the show a lot too. I just hope they don’t fall into the trap of getting the two main characters together, it works much better when they play “cat and mouse”. I also liked that they gave him a family, loved the mother and the daughter.

I thought that Susan Sullivan was absolutely a riot as the mother in the Castle pilot… I hope that we get to see a lot of her in the future.

I loved the first episode. I really hope they don’t ruin the show by creating a romantic connection between the two main characters.

I think the woman at the table might be Faye Kellerman. I love this show already 🙂

Hmmm… I watched a television show a while back that featured real life crimes “hosted” by mystery authors, and Faye Kellerman was one of the hosts. From the little bit that I saw on the show, I’m not sure that the woman at the table is Kellerman…

‘Eureka’ is coming back this summer (theoretically). I think they got hit by the writers’ strike and are having a catch-up. I miss it, but have the first two seasons on DVD at least.

I was able to stay awake on Saturday night and watched ‘Castle’. It was so good! Thank you, again, for the cranium’s up on the re-showing of it. I hope they do this all the time. I have an even bigger crush on Nathan Fillion, especially his expressive eyebrows! = )

I looked really hard at the female at the poker table, assuming I might figure out who she was. She didn’t speak and it almost looked like she was ‘just’ the dealer. It’s a mystery….

    Hi Vickie…

I cannot wait to see the new Eureka. That is one fun show to watch! I’m glad that you let us know about it.

I hope that Fillion will be around for a longer time as Castle than he was in Firefly. Seems like if a show is too good, it doesn’t stay on television. That’s a… (as you would say!) “cranium”-scratcher.

I rewatched the poker table sequence several times to try to identify the woman… You’re right…. It’s a mystery…

Finally, a prime time tv show you can curl up with like a good book. There is talent out there and it is finally emerging.
This show is very well written, the themes are clever (I loved last night’s ending with the daughter thanking her father for being her Nanny). They tied it all together with a red ribbon and sent a message too.
The part of Castle’s mother is played outstandingly.
It’s literary, it’s charming, it’s a breath of fresh air.
And lo and behold it is all of that and more and it didn’t require throwing everything off of a desk and having sex in the office.

    Hi Ida,

You are so right! How many times do we have to sit through that desk scene?!? You have to wonder if the writers who include that particular scene think that they are the first to think of it. I am sure I have seen that scene several times, to say the least!

    Hi Lisa,

Sometimes the networks yank really good shows off the air for no apparent reasons. Let’s hope they don’t do that to Castle.

WOW, THIS IS TERRIFIC, IT HAD ME AFTER JUST THE FIRST FEW MOMENTS OF INTERPLAY OF THE MAIN CAST, MOVED QUICKLY, HAD TO BE CAREFUL AS NOT TO LAUGH FOR FEAR OF MISSING ANOTHER CLEVER GESTURE, EYE CONTACTS GOING ON, ALSO THE ADORABLE DAUGHTER SO MATURE, YET NOT SMARTY PANTS YOUNG LADY, THE MOTHER-IN-LAW, I DO HOPE SHE STAYS ON AS A KEEPER. I HAVE NEVER SEEN EITHER OF THESE TWO TALENTED STARS BEFORE,BUT THEY ARE FASCINATING, SHARP, DO THEY EVER “CLICK” AS AN ODD PAIR, I HOPE THIS WILL NOT BE LOST, AND STAYS ON AND ON, CAN NOT GET ENOUGH OF IT SO FAR.

THIS IS SO FRESH, CLEVER, SUCH A SURPRISE, I WILL NEVER MISS A SHOW, IF IT COMES OUT ON DVD’S, I’LL BUY THE WHOLE LOT.

THANK YOU FOR THIS TREAT FOR THE LAUGHTER,MYSTERY, TOUCHES OF A TEAR OR TWO, JUST PERFECTO WORK OF A SERIES.

    FOREVER A NEWFOUND FAN, SALLYBEV

      Hi Sallybev,

Your comment about the daughter is so good >>> I am tired of (almost) all teenagers being portrayed as “smarty pants” on television. It is refreshing to see a TV teenage girl who isn’t talking back, rolling her eyes, swishing her head in disgust at her parent, and commenting “whatever” all the way through her character’s appearance on the show. Nice to see one who loves her father and actually studies (or even reads!) instead of only concentrating on extracurricular activities.

The people cast for the parts are great. They work together so well, everything seems very natural. I hope the show stays on a long time. It became a favorite of mine immediately. I hate the situation comedy shows that most people seem to like. I’m insulted when a show has canned laughter telling me when I”m supposed to laugh–especially when 98 percent of the time, it’s not worth laughing at. I hope some goofy sitcom does not knock Castle off the air because the dumbos that watch sitcoms are not intelligent enough to understand a show like Castle.

I think Castle will last. At least I sure hope it will because it just seems to get better with each season. I wish they’d change the timeslot though, I’m never home when it airs but luckily I found out that my employer, DISH Network, has a live streaming site called dishonline (dot) com that has a ton of streaming content, including Castle so I’ve been able to watch it. It’s a great site and since a lot of content is available to non-subscribers and subscribers alike.
