Cassandra Chan, Roberta Gellis, Susan Elia MacNeal, Bernadette Pajers, & Debbie Viguié – 5 Author Additions to the Cozy Mystery Site

June 24, 2013

I have just added five new mystery authors to the Cozy Mystery site. These authors are some of the authors who you all have recommended to me as belonging on the site. (I haven’t read any of them yet.)

Cassandra Chan writes the Phillip Bethancourt & Jack Gibbons Mystery Series. Bethancourt is the rich friend of Gibbons, a sergeant at Scotland Yard.

Roberta Gellis writes the Magdâline la Batarde Mystery Series. Magdâline is a madame in a London brothel during the 12th century.

Susan Elia MacNeal‘s Maggie Hope Mystery Series is set during the 1940s in London. MacNeal’s series features an American typist who is privy to many secrets.

Bernadette Pajer pens the Professor Bradshaw Mystery Series. This series is set during the early 1900s and has a professor of electrical engineering as its sleuth. Professor Bradshaw not only teaches in Washington (the state), but he is also an inventor.

Debbie Viguié writes the Psalms 23 Mystery Series. The mysteries in this series are set during different holidays, and feature Cindy Preston (a church secretary) and Rabbi Jeremiah Silverman.

Susan Elia MacNeal is my new favorite author. I have read her first two books in the Maggie Hope series and look forward to her third book.

Patty H, I think Susan Elia MacNeal’s books have been recommended several times on the Monthly Mystery Recommendation entry.

The Susan Elia MacNeal’s Maggie Hope Mystery Series is excellent and well researched. It shares everyday events during World War II while telling a good historical mystery. I just finished book 3 and looking forward to book 4.

    The Maggie Hope series:
    (1) Mr. Churchill’s Secretary
    (2) Princess Elizabeth’s Spy
    (3) His Majesty’s Hope
    (4) The Prime Minister’s Secret Agent (to be released in 2014)

Thanks, Elizabeth, for all of the information about Susan Elia MacNeal‘s Maggie Hope Mystery Series. (I have the link on her name in the entry, which is why I didn’t list the books in her series here.)

I only have one of the Cassandra Chan novels – ‘Village Affairs’ – but if you like classic British cozies, (Christie, et al) you’ll probably like these.
She does a wonderful ‘country house’ mystery. Lightly updated to the 21st century, but without losing the old-fashioned feel.

Susan*, thanks for telling us about Cassandra Chan’s style of writing. Her books look really appealing to me. I tend to prefer my mysteries to be as “classic British cozies” as possible.

I have read all except the last one for the Psalm 23 series by Debbie Viguie. Not sure that I would classify that series as ‘cozy’ but I do like the series.

Thanks for the other suggestions. Will look them up.

Cindy M, on my “contact” page, I ask that people only recommend Cozy Mystery authors. Unfortunately, since I haven’t read any of the books people suggest I add to the site, I am not able to determine just how “Cozy” the authors are.

So funny how circular things are. I have to say I kind of glided over this page when you first posted it because aside from the Maggie Hope series none really called out to me. Then just yesterday I dusted off my unread copy of “Murder Most Cozy” short stories omnibus and dove in. One of the stories I really liked was by a C. M. Chan. Couldn’t find him/her anywhere so I added sleuths’ names to my web search and ended up being referred here. Turns out C. M. is Cassandra. And this short story was written in 1988, well before the first full book appeared apparently! Anyway, not of consequence I suppose, but just wanted to share the kismet at work.

Now that is a perfect example of kismet, Joshua. (I just went to Amazon’s page for her, and her picture looks like she must have been ten years old when she wrote that story!)
