Cozy Mystery (and Other Favorite) Books, Movies, and TV

Carol Culver, Grace Carroll, Debra H. Goldstein, Catriona McPherson, & Hank Phillippi Ryan : Four More Mystery Book Authors on the Cozy Mystery Site…

August 13, 2011

I know that if you look at the title of today’s entry, it looks like I can’t add. But, as one of the author goes by two different names, then I am (indeed) adding four new authors to the Cozy Mystery site:

Carol Culver aka Grace Carroll: As Culver, she writes the Pie Shop Mystery Series. Hanna Denton returns home to take over her grandmother’s pie shop in California. As Carroll, she writes the Accessories Mystery Series. Rita works in a very posh San Francisco boutique.

Debra H. Goldstein: Goldstein is a real life judge! She writes the Denney Silber Mystery Series which stars, as its sleuth, Denney, a student at the University of Michigan, during the 1970s.

Catriona McPherson: McPherson writes the Dandy Gilver Mystery Series. Dandy (Dandelion Dahlia Leston) is an aristocratic sleuth who lives in Scotland during the 1920s.

Hank Phillippi Ryan: Ryan is a Boston investigative reporter, who happens to write a mystery series which “stars” a television reporter in Boston. Ryan’s Charlotte McNally Mystery Series has won several major mystery book awards, including the prestigious Agatha and Anthony Awards.

I’m really pleased to see that you have added Catriona McPherson to your list. I’ve enjoyed reading her Dandy Gilver series from the first book and am currently reading her latest, Dandy Gilver and an Unsuitable Day for Murder.

So far, there are only six books in the series, but I really hope she carries on writing them.

The interplay between Dandy and her fellow sleuth Alec Osborne is a pure joy to read. Her characters are really well drawn and have that element of familiarity which triggers memories of people you have known with similar characteristics to them. It is very easy to get totally involved with both the characters and the puzzle of who commited the murder and when you have finished one of her books you feel really satisfied and hopeful that the wait for the next book won’t be too long!

Catriona McPherson is definitely a worthy addition to your list of cozy mystery authors.

A real-life judge writing a mystery series? What is this world coming to? Is writing mysteries becoming an insider’s business? Just kidding. But I am interested in how insider books differ from outsider ones. We can all predict ways in which being an insider can help in writing mysteries, but how can it detract?

I was hesitant to put “real life judge” since I know that there are many, many lawyers out there who write mysteries. I think that being an insider can really help them with details that a lot of us would only be able to imagine. You do pose a very interesting question when you ask about the insider perhaps having problems because of their knowledge/experience…

Although Maze in Blue is a college cozy without a courtroom scene, my legal background impacted my first drafts. I rewrote Maze in Blue several times because scenes and the setting in the early versions tended to be too detail oriented. When I read a brief or draft an opinion, every issue needs to be fleshed out, but I had to step away from that to make sure that my cozy was fun to read.

Have you considered adding Beverly Connor to your list? She has the Lindsey Chamberlain series and Dianne Fallon series.
