Bony Blithe Awards – “Best Canadian Light Mystery”

May 20, 2015

We’ll soon be finding out who the winner will be for the Bony Blithe Awards. When I visited their website, I found out that the Bony Blithe awards are the Canadian awards for “light mysteries”. All of the nominated authors have to be Canadian citizens, or at least residents of Canada >>> permanent residents, that is! Young Adult and Noir mystery authors are not included in the nominations. They liken their Bony Blithe Awards to our Agatha Awards, which as I have said many times, are the Coziest of the mystery awards. Apparently these awards used to be presented at the Bloody Words Banquet, but are now being presented at the Bony Blithe Bash.

Congratulations to all of the nominees of this year, and all nominees and winners from the previous years!

Thanks for this great piece about the Bony Blithe Awards. Being shortlisted has been a great honour (yes, with the extra “U”). The Bony Blithe Bash on May 29th 2015 should be quite the event – let’s hope there’s no blood on the carpet after the winner is announced 😉 For all your followers, these shortlists make excellent additions to anyone’s TBR pile.

Cathy, I totally agree with you about these shortlists being good resources. I feel that way about the Agatha Awards as well. It stands to reason that if they are awards for the Coziest of Cozies, then all of the nominees and winners are very Cozy!

What you say is quite right, Danna – though I know that the term “cozy” is a continuum, rather than an absolute, and some prefer a very specific type of cozy, whereas others just like the general idea of a cozy. I think one of the best things about your site is that it really gives an excellent representation of a very wide range of cozies. Thanks from all of us who prefer that general type of book 🙂

Thanks for the write-up! Just one comment: since there is no Bloody Words anymore, we are presenting the award at our own Bony Blithe Bash on May 29th.

Caro, thank you. I just changed my entry to reflect that the awards will be given out at the Bony Blithe Bash.

Totally off subject. I am reading a series of books by an author who is not listed on the Cozy Mystery site. Author is Amanda M. Lee…different than Amanda Lee. Must have the M. In the name. She writes the series “Wicked Witches of the Midwest” With Amazon Kindle app. They can be read for free. Amanda M. Lee has a sense of humor that keeps me laughing all the way through. Normally I would not read 2 or more books back to back of the same series, which these books, I am not getting weary of the characters and am on the 4th book in a row. I think Amanda M. Lee should have a place on the Cozy Mystery site.

Hi, is Vicki Delaney a Canadian author? Is she considered a Cozy author? I don’t know if I got her name from here or just picked up one of her books at the local library. I have read 2 of hers and they describe the scenery, the characters and flow well.

Billie, I am guessing that Vicki Delany (aka Eva Gates) must indeed be Canadian, otherwise she wouldn’t have qualified to be nominated for the Bony Blithe award…

I’ll jump right in here and let you know that Vicki Delany is indeed a Canadian author – in fact she’s currently President of Crime Writers of Canada, and I’m Vice President! Our website, http://www.crimewriterscanada.com lists all of our more than 300 members (though not all write cozy books).

Thank you, Cathy. I guess I was wondering if the awards were just for books or their authors (whether they were Canadian or not) I do enjoy Ms. Delany’s books and those of Louise Penny.
The Three Pine/Insp. G books are hard to put down. I am looking forward to reading more.

Hello again Billie – both the Arthur Ellis Awards and the Bony Blithe Award are open to Canadian authors who write books set anywhere in the world. Also, you can enter if you’re from somewhere else in the world but now a legally recognised Permanent Resident in Canada. The work wouldn’t be eligible if it were, say written by an American, and simply set in Canada.
