I have been asked to come up with a list of authors who are similar to Simon Brett, particularly his Fethering Mystery series. I first discovered Simon Brett by reading a few of his Mrs. Pargeter Mystery Series books, which led me to his Fethering Mystery Series.

Danna, I really like Simon Brett’s books very much. Most of his books I find have some great “laugh aloud moments”. Those interludes really endear a book to me. I wanted to mention that I also am happy that I “stumbled” into Mark Schweizer. Not a library had them so I ended up buying them and am I ever glad. When do you think he will publish a new one. I finished Nicola Upson’s first Josephine Tey and can hardly wait to start the next. Thanks for the tip.

Since the listings above, Simon Brett has come out with the BLOTTO, TWINKS, AND THE… series, not mysteries as such, but hilarious adventures set in roughly Downton Abbey times. Imagine the rampageousness of Laura Childs’s amateur sleuths in peril, more derring-do than a 20th-Century pirate romp, and the most fun (And winked borrowed style) of P.G. Wodehouse, with dashes of Anita Loos and Fred & Ginger musicals, as gorgeous (despite their basilisk-like awful alleged mother) siblings with near (?) superpowers and an over-the-top “feudal spirit” servant. Twinks is endlessly brilliant, Blotto strong as a golem on speed and about as brainy. Their made-up boarding school slang can be effervescent or irritating, depending on the reader, but probably not for many whose native tongue isn’t English. If you love P.G. Wodehouse, you’ll probably thank God and Mr. Brett for Blotto and Twinks!

Good series to add to your list: Ellen Crosby’s Virginia wine country mysteries. Her protagonist is Lucie Montgomery, who owns the Montgomery Estate Vineyard. There are several books in this series, and all have the name of a wine in their title.
