Author Susanna Calkins Interviews… Me!

October 4, 2012

I’ll bet that a lot of you didn’t know that our very own “Susie” is actually Susanna Calkins, the soon-to-be published author of A Murder at Rosamund’s Gate.

Here is the blurb about Susie (or I guess I should say Susanna) that appears on her Amazon page:

“SUSANNA CALKINS became fascinated with seventeenth-century England while pursuing her doctorate in British history. A former pirate, she once served on the Golden Hinde–a museum replica of Sir Frances Drake’s ship–now dry docked in the Thames. Originally from Philadelphia, Calkins now lives outside of Chicago with her husband and two sons. The Murder at Rosamund’s Gate, featuring Lucy Campion, is her first novel.”

This is the blurb from her actual website:

“Educator, historian, faculty developer by day… writer by night…

I’ve had a morbid curiosity about murder in seventeenth-century England ever since grad school. The ephemera from the archives–tantalizing true accounts of the fantastic and the strange–inspired my historical mysteries.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, I live outside Chicago now, with my husband and two sons. Represented by David Hale Smith of Inkwell Management, my first novel, A Murder at Rosamund’s Gate (Minotaur/ St.Martin’s Press), will be published in Winter 2013.”

I am anxiously awaiting its release, have already pre-ordered my copy of this historical mystery book, and cannot wait until it is finally released.

Now, I hate to toot my own horn, but Susie/Susanna recently posted an interview with me, and I thought I would pass it along for those of you who might be interested in reading it:

Some insights about mysteries from a long-time blogger and reader…

Thank you, Susie, for the opportunity to share a little about myself.

Really great to read the interview. Good going, both of you and it’s nice to know more about you two. Looking forward to Susie’s book. I’ll be proud to say I know her when it’s out.

Danna, I just now read the interview. It was great! Your blog has become a sort of lifeline for me. Your topics are really very interesting. I know I can get carried away with some of my postings and these don’t always get posted. But that is okay. At least I know you do read them. Sometimes I just want to vent.
Thanks for putting up with me. I love reading what you and the others who contribute to this wonderful blog of yours have to say.

Excellent article, it’s nice to know a little more about Danna, the cozy mystery lady! 🙂 St. Martins Press is a very good publishing company, I will certainly read Ms. Calkins’ new novel, since Danna recommends it and the publisher is one whose books I regularly read.

For me, I’ve really enjoyed reading Danna’s posts and everyone’s responses. It’s so fun here! 🙂 If you ever get a chance to attend Bouchercon–the world mystery convention–I hope you do. At the cozy mystery sessions, I’ve noticed a wonderful friendly atmosphere in the audience which I can see on this blog!

Hi Susie, Bouchercon will be in my home town of Albany, New York next year. Hope to see you there?
I will definitely be attending. How could I pass up a convention like this in my own back yard. This years Chair, Al Abramson is from our area so we have him to thank. So exciting.

Donna, Bouchercon is in Cleveland this year, October 4-7 and next year in Albany, September 19-22. After that I believe it is in Long Beach, CA then Raleigh and then Toronto.

    That was a great interview!

What I liked about it best was the fact that your responses to Susie’s questions were thoughtful, witty and informative … which are three of the reasons why you are such a great and successful blogger. Well done and long may you continue!

As you all know, Susie, has been commenting on this blog for a little while now, so I feel like I “know her”.

She sent me a note from Bouchercon this past weekend, so is probably newly inspired to get back to work on her mysteries!
