If you’re looking for a very Cozy Mystery television show to watch, then Darby and Joan may be for you. This Australian TV show stars Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi, and airs on Acorn. There are eight episodes in its first season, which is available now.
This show not only features a very Cozy mood, but it also could be used as an Australian travel guide. It seems like the producers were very intent on showing the viewers stunningly gorgeous scenery.
The show features Joan (Greta Scacchi), a British nurse, who goes to Australia to find out how/why her husband died. Her plan is to follow his moves in her RV, and try to figure out the where, when, why, and what he was experiencing before his untimely death. That is the arc of the first season.
Along her journey she collides with Darby and his sweet dog, Diesel. They end up teaming together to solve a weekly mystery. This platonic, retiree couple travel from one campground to another – each week getting closer to solving the season’s arc, while solving “smaller” mysteries along the way. When the first season ends they let us know what next season’s arc will be…
Don’t be put off by the main characters being retirees. They are not old fuddy duddies! Also, don’t be put off by them being platonic… what’s wrong with becoming good friends? Who knows where their relationship will take them? What’s the rush?! Both Joan and Darby have a zest for life and are ready to enjoy all sorts of new experiences.
My husband and I both enjoyed the first season of Darby and Joan and are looking forward to the second season. Thank goodness Acorn TV had the good sense to back this show!
No behind-closed-doors scenes, no foul language, no gore, no smart-alecky children, no car chases, no shoot-them-ups… just a lot of really good acting, great chemistry between the two leads, beautiful scenery, & Cozy Mysteries.
Darby and Joan is available through Acorn on Amazon Prime Video.

Regina, I’ve seen that one as well – I wrote about it in this blog entry about 8 years ago, if you’re interested in hearing my thoughts on it.

My husband and I both enjoyed this series. The characters are likable and I enjoy their friendship and the fact that they’re older. We’re older so it’s nice to see people closer to our age as the main characters.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Lynn, it’s definitely nice to see a bit of diversification like this on television!

I really enjoyed this series. I found the DVD through the library. Acorn has so many good mysteries that I just periodically put the word Acorn in the catalog search engine then sort the 100’s of entries by date. I have found a number of really good movies and series this way. It helps that the catalog covers all of the libraries in my large county.

Janice, that sounds like a good way to do a first search for new stuff from Acorn!

Loved Darby and Joan (Season 1)!!! So glad to hear that there will be a 2nd season. Do you know when it will be on Acorn?
As for their platonic relationship, I find that very refreshing and realistic once we reach a more mature age. Hormones may drive relationships in our younger years; but companionship, mental connection, common interests, and wonderful conversation are top priorities as we age.
I’m hoping Acorn will also bring back Harry Wild. Any news?
Thank you so much for all of the time, research, and work that you dedicate to your brilliant site!!!! I refer to it constantly and have shared it with many family, friends, and fellow cozy lovers.

Mellow, I’m not sure – I’m finding it hard to even get really hard confirmation that there will be a second season. I do know that Harry Wild will supposedly be having a second season, supposedly sometime in 2023 – though I haven’t heard anything new about it either for some time.

It took me about 15 minutes to recognize Greta and Bryan(Thornbirds?). I love them together,I love this show. I am though, sensing a pattern,of the husband being shady in another country, and the unassuming wife goes on the mission to uncover the truth. I usually see it in the British and or the Australian shows. Am I crazy, or has anyone else noticed this?
