As it is almost October 2020, I thought I would post the Turner Classic Movies channel’s October mystery movies today. I don’t know if other people have been so struck by this, but it seems to me that TCM is moving toward presenting more “current” movies these days. (when I say “current” I mean movies from the 1960s and 1970s.) I’ve been a fan of the channel for many years, and I don’t remember a time when the Golden Era of Hollywood was not the main focus of the channel’s movies. Hmmm… Have any of you noticed this, too? And if so, what do you think about it?
On another note, since it’s October, Turner Classic Movies is going to be showing a lot of “Halloweeny” type movies. So, if you love the old Bela Lugosi, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr., Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Vincent Price (etc.) movies, then you’re in for a treat this month! (I’m not going to list them, but be sure to be on the lookout for them – if you enjoy them. I watch the same “Halloweeny” type movies year after year… I never get tired of them!) Also, while I’m not talking about movies that happen to be mysteries – for those of you who enjoy the old Dr. Kildare movies, Turner Classic Movies will be airing five of them on Wednesday the 21st of October.

Becky King says
What? No Arsenic and Old Lace? This is a great Halloween movie. Scary and funny. So disappointed.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Becky, yes, that is a shame!
KG says
I used to think I had to have TCM as one of my cable selection channels. I will be watching Guys and Dolls tonight (Saturday) and I watched Laura the other day. I am finding that I enjoy movies from the 40’s and 50’s rather than the current trend. I am thinking they are trying to attract a younger audience and to them the ’60’s through the ’90’s are old movies.
I think I will be rethinking TCM unless something changes. Oh and I will not be watching horror movies on any channel. I do not need scary entertainment – the world right now is scary enough.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
KG, I can certainly see staying away from horror at the moment. I still feel like I need TCM, personally – There might be more movies I don’t quite consider classics, but at the same time it’s the best way to get a lot of the ones I still really want access to.
SusanB says
I agree that TCM seems to be featuring more “current” movies, and it may be a move to bring in those of us who grew up in the 60’s and 70’s. The Golden Age movies are now “special” showings with a theme or star. I do like that they are showing more funky shorts. I’d like to see a 50/50 split between newer films and older ones. TCM has to make money to exist and I would rather they market to keep a new audience and still show some older movies than die altogether.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
SusanB, I suppose at a certain point what constitutes a classic needs to be reexamined.
Donna McLean says
I’ve noticed the trend toward more modern films, too. Okay with it if it’s limited to a few films per month, but I really don’t want the network to go too far in that direction because the classics are classics for a reason! And it’s getting harder to find them in other places, even on DVD. I’ve been building my video library for awhile now because I’m afraid one day the classic films will disappear. So I’m okay with top notch films like The Artist (2011) and Wings of Desire (1988), both of which have been shown on TCM, but I don’t want the ordinary sort of thing that shows up on other TV channels these days.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Donna, I suppose it’s always going to be a trade-off between old movies and new.
Linda P says
I have noticed this as well. My favorite movies are from the 1940s and 50s, so I am not happy about it. TCM has always been my favorite channel to catch old favorites, and discover new ones. I am hoping that this trend does not continue.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Linda, there’s certainly something to be said for sticking with the formula that got the channel to where it is now.
Karla Sanneman says
Your comment on the movie change on TCM is interesting as I was thinking that same thing about music too. 60’s and 70’s music is the new classic now.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Karla, the times do keep changing like that!
Teri W says
I look forward to this list every month. You got me to thinking that even the movies from the 70s are half a century old and some of the older films are approaching 100. Thank you to Ted Turner for saving these gems and sharing them with us commercial free and thank you to you for curating the list each month.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Teri, you’re welcome! I’m glad that people continue to find these sort of blog entries helpful.
Trice says
I noticed and I’m not really happy about the more current movies they are offering. Now that we have to pay for TCM on demand I wish they would stick to the classics from the 30’s and 40’s.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Trice, I know it’s definitely what I come to the channel for.
Margie F says
Thanks for providing this list. There are definitely a few movies worth watching.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Margie, you’re welcome.
Brooke Lilly says
Once again I salivate at this lineup because I only get antennae tv. Maybe my sis and I will talk about basic cable.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Brooke, a mutual love of classic movies seems like a nice thing to bond over.
Brenda Martin says
I agree. I am not fond of the movies especially the 1960s. I love the 1940 and 1950 movies. Thanks for this post. I am looking forward to October.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Brenda, you’re welcome!
Ivie says
I agree with what most are saying about TCM. I have a question, is there a way to add a print function to the list of Monthly List of Movies? I would love to have the list to review without having to open up my computer to look. My sister would appreciate this feature as well. She it a total fan of the 30s/40s/50s movies. Thank you for considering this.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Ivie, I do print my own list up, actually. I’d suggest copying it to another program first, to avoid printing out the menu stuff.
