This is just a quick note to remind you all that TNT’s The Closer returned to television on Monday night. As most of you know, it is The Closer’s last season. (I wrote about The Closer before, and it continues to be one of my favorite television shows.)
The Closer has followed Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) as she “closed” more cases for the L.A.P.D. than probably any other reigning police chief. Of course, she did this by using techniques that were more commonly practiced back in the 1950s and 1960s, than are allowed these days.
“Say it ain’t so!”>>> but it is! This is the final season for The Closer, but there is some good news at the end of this rainbow: In August, there will be a new show on the horizon: Major Crimes. Heading to the Major Crimes line-up will be Mary McDonnell (Capt. Sharon Raydor). And, even better news, some of The Closer’s other cast members will be following McDonnell to the Major Crimes unit.
I have a few characters who I definitely want to continue seeing… unfortunately, they include ALL of the major players from The Closer:
Lt. Provenza (G. W. Bailey)
Lt. Andy Flynn (Tony Denison)
Detective Sgt. David Gabriel (Corey Reynolds)
Detective Julio Sanchez (Raymond Cruz)
Lt. Mike Tao (Michael Paul Chan)
Technician Buzz Watson (Phillip P. Keene)
Asst. Police Chief Will Pope (J. K. Simmons)
FBI agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney)
Commander Taylor (Robert Gossett)
In case you missed Monday night’s debut of The Closer‘s final season, the episode is called “Hostile Witness“, and it will re-air this Saturday morning (July 14, 2012) at 10:00 AM (central) and again on this coming Monday night (July 16, 2012) at 7:00 PM (central) on TNT.
I am truly sorry to see this show leave TNT’s line-up, and hope that Major Crimes will continue to have the same great writers associated with it, and of course, the same wonderful actors we have all grown to love.

Danna, I just searched for the cast of Major Crimes. The list includes: G. W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Chan, Raymond Cruz and Philip Keane. Guest appearances will be made by Jon Tenney and Robert Gossett. It looks like the only main characters missing are Chief Pope and Det. Gabriel. I think it will still be a good show!

I am going to miss Brenda Leigh, too, but Major Crimes looks like it will be good. I’ve seen Jon Tenney pop up in Newsroom on HBO. J. K. Simmons has his own comedy this fall. I’m going to miss Gabriel. Corey Reynolds is a talented young man who played a well written supporting character. I hope he doesn’t turn out to be the leak in Brenda’s unit. It looks like next week’s show will be a Flynn and Provenza comedy adventure. I love the yearly break that puts them in the limelight and gives us comic relief. I hope some of the lighthearted banter carries over to the Major Crimes. It’s part of what gave The Closer such great timing.

Danna, The TV show that I liked was “Cold Case.” There were a lot of shows that had times from like back in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. The small scenes from back in those times, plus the music from those times, brought back a lot of old memories. I did get to see “Cold Case” on afternoon TV, but I don’t think that it’s on cable anymore either.

Those sound like good reasons to watch a show, Linda C. VH1 used to have a show in which they would concentrate on a year from “long ago”. I loved that show. It was such fun to see the musical groups, and the fashions from back then.

I enjoyed “Cold Case” as well, partially because I liked seeing how people changed over the years as a result of the crime (for better or for worse) and I also liked the idea that, however, delayed, justice will eventually be served.
Linda, if you get a channel called ION as part of your cable package, they carry “Cold Case” a couple evenings a week.

Julia, I don’t know about Linda C getting ION, but I’m going to go check and see if we do!

I am also sad I have watched this show it is very enjoyable. Did you catch the new show “Perception” with Eric McCormack, it was also enjoyable.

From what I understand, Corey Reynolds and J.K. Simmons will not be continuing, although the rest are. I don’t think you have him listed, but the guy that is always at the controls during interviews is going to have an expanded part. I’m looking forward to the new show to see how everything works out. We are losing a wonderful actress, but I can understand her desire to make changes in her life. Thanks for this post!

Danna, Do any of you know if the tv series that is running on a cable network called “Longmire”, the story about the Walt Longmire series that is, written by Craig Johnson? I really like this series. I hope this series will be run during the winter months when I am inside more often. Except for the baseball games I don’t watch much TV in the summer but I do during the winter months.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Linda, I just looked it up, and you’re right about Craig Johnson being the author behind the books that the television show, Longmire, is based on.

I think I’ve solved the case. The leak is Gabriel’s girlfriend. They’ve been dating for about a year which is the right time frame and David probably didn’t realize that she’d been passing information to the attorney. He was just talking about his work.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
You could be correct, Jim.

I hope you’re wrong, Jim!!!

My daughter and I just watched the latest The Closer show, where we finally meet Gabriel’s girlfriend, or should I say we finally hear about her?!? I am hoping that the writers don’t make the leak Gabriel’s pillow talk! They have strung us along for (what is it now?) two years. Although I agree with you, Jim, that it looks like they are setting the girlfriend up as the leak, I feel that this would be a cheap ploy. For two years (?) we have not met this law student, and we have been waiting patiently to find out which of the “insiders” has double-crossed Brenda Leigh (or is it Brenda Lee?).
Of course, to further muddy the waters, they have thrown in Pope as a contender, with Brenda Leigh/Lee finally (just this week!) saying he’s bad, and only out to help himself. Of course, I have to wonder how bringing a law suit against Brenda Leigh/Lee wouldn’t have reflected on her immediate boss, the man who hired her over all of the other qualified people who had been busy rising up the ranks (locally) for the job Pope handed her on a platter.
Unfortunately, with neither of these characters going on to the next show, it looks like it is between Gabriel’s pillow talk and Pope. Dare I resist the obvious pun? Cop Out!
