Here’s a quick note to let those of you who are Debbie Macomber’s fans know that she will be on the Hallmark channel’s Home & Family show tomorrow, Tuesday, October 22. I know this is short notice, but better now than never.
I am currently writing a post about the Home & Family show, so I will keep this brief. It airs from 9:00 to 11:00 AM (Central), obviously on the Hallmark channel.
Debbie Macomber is on the Cozy Mystery site, even though she is not a mystery author. I know a lot of you follow her books. (I believe I added her to the site after watching the first of the two Mrs. Miracle Christmas movies on the Hallmark channel. Mrs. Miracle in 2009 followed by Call Me Mrs. Miracle the next year. >>> Can you tell I enjoy her Christmas movies?)
Debbie Macomber will be talking about Starry Night, her 2013 Christmas novel. I don’t know how they plan on interviewing her, but a lot of the time, on this show, they have the guest for the day stay with them the entire two hours. We’ll see what they do tomorrow!

Danna, I also have enjoyed quite a few of Debbie Macomber’s novels. I know it is early but there are already several new novels on the shelves from favorite authors that have Christmas themes. I have read some of these already. But there are so many new ones on the shelves, and more to be released, that I am afraid that I won’t have time to read them all if I wait until after Thanksgiving.
Speaking about Thanksgiving— I see on the TV news that more and more big retail stores are going to open either ALL DAY Thanksgiving or during the evening hours.
I really feel sorry for those employees who have to give up their Thanksgiving celebrations so that these big places can make a few more millions of dollars selling a lot of merchandise that are made by people in countries far, far away from us that couldn’t care less if we set aside a day to give thanks for all that we have here in this country. These companies in these other countries couldn’t care less if these employees have to work on that day.
What some of these retailers need to learn is that people will only have so much money to spend. Not having Thanksgiving day to go shopping isn’t going to matter much at all.
To me this is just another example of greed trying to ruin more and more of our countries tried and true traditions.
Thanks, just something that I needed to get off my chest this morning.

Linda, I haven’t watched Home & Family yet. On their “what’s coming up soon” list, they said Debbie Macomber was going to talk about Starry Night. But, yesterday they announced she was going to talk about the Hallmark channel’s Cedar Cove series. I’ll be interested in seeing if she talks about just the Hallmark shows, or if she also talks about her book.
As for stores being open on Thankgsgiving, I agree that taking our holidays and making them days retailers can make more money seems pretty sad. I guess they want to capitalize on people getting off from work… well, at least the people who don’t work for them! I wonder how many of the CEOs and board members of those stores will be spending their Thanksgivings at the stores rather than spending their days with their families…

Danna: Thanks for the Hallmark Channel heads-up. If you have any tips on the Christmas movies that Hallmark airs, please pass them along. Linda C: I agree that retail stores don’t need to be open on Thanksgiving. Heck, I don’t think they should even be open on Sunday. However, do you think they would be doing this if they didn’t have public support? Do people refuse to shop on Thanksgiving? Unfortunately, Thanksgiving no longer has any meaning for a large segment of American society.
Donna says
I agree with both comments. We avoid shopping on any holiday that a store may choose to open, and hope TPTB (the powers that be) get the message! They can’t make that much money in only one day, so just close and give your employees a break. Speaking as one who used to work in retail, they really need a break!

Donna, I’m guessing that since everyone gets off work on Thanksgiving, the CEOs hate to see the day wasted.

Laura, I’ll take a look ans see what I can find regarding the Hallmark holiday movies.
(I don’t even venture into the stores the day after Thanksgiving!)

Oh no I missed it! Nicholas Sparks was on one of the Hallmark shows last week, fortunately I DVR’d that one. He shared some very interesting thoughts about writing. My Mom loves Debbie Macomber’s books so she just might be getting this one for her birthday….shhh, don’t tell! 🙂

Donna, we won’t tell!

Laura , You are right, of course. If these stores wouldn’t have shoppers just maybe they wouldn’t be opened on the holidays. Sometimes we get what we ask for, don’t we??
I do like to shop the day after Thanksgiving. For a few years it was a tradition that I would get up early and go with my granddaughters. We would go to the malls, then go out to breakfast. The girls are all grown now, so that is an event that has gone away.
I remember one year we were in a mall that was very crowded. A lady walking behind us was complaining about the crowded store to her male companion. I thought ” lady, you are a part of this crowd!!”

Linda, my husband told me the stores were open last Thanksgiving, also. I vaguely remember they were open for limited times, but they could have been open all day.
It’s a shame that your day-after Thanksgiving shopping ritual with your granddaughters is a thing of the past.
My sister and her daughter have been shopping on Black Friday for years. Probably about the same amount of years as I have been doing all of my buying on-line! My sister is very much like my mother. Shopping is something they have in common. As for me, I take after my father. Never did enjoy shopping…

I was unable to watch the whole show yesterday, but did catch the segment featuring Debbie Macomber. I learned a few things about her. She had a learning difference and barely graduated high school. She learned to knit when she was young which helped with comprehension and math skills. I also learned that she lives in Cedar Cove and her office is above her yarn store. She is a very positive person. I’m glad I caught the show.

Karen L, I just watched the taped show this morning, and you are so right about Debbie Macomber being a positive person. I really enjoyed her segment, and thought the sweater she was knitting is phenomenal. I love that she feels like she has to write to support her yarn addiction! (I could tell that Cristina Ferrare took an instant liking to her.)
