I Know I Shouldn't Complain, BUT…

September 12, 2008

OK!!! What’s with this weather in San Antonio! I was talking to my college roommate the other night, who was saying that her weather forecast looked awful… She lives in the eastern part of Iowa, and she was talking about possible dips down to 38°. So, of course, I had to go and google her city… and sure enough, fall/autumn is upon us! When I say “us”… I don’t mean the people here in San  Antonio. Our seven day forecast ranges with temperatures from 67° to 95°.

So, probably many of you are wondering… Is this woman ever happy!?! How can you complain about those types of temperatures!?!

The answer is this: I have lived in Connecticut, Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska… Maryland and Virginia (on very cold days!) and I just expect certain things to go hand-in-hand with the first sightings of the bright yellow/orange school buses, and those things certainly don’t include shorts and sleeveless shirts!

I guess it’s just that time of year: I’m going to have to get out my seasonal cozy mysteries and my 3-D fall/autumn stickers so that I can be reminded that yes, indeed… fall/autumn is on the way…

It's That Time of Year Again…

September 10, 2008

I know that I wrote about this last year, but already I miss my daughter. Luckily, my son lives right here in San Antonio, but my time with our daughter was way too short this summer. She interned (again!!!) for most of the summer, but she was able to “give us” two weeks at home before returning to college.

When I was growing up, my summer jobs consisted of just that… summer jobs. It seems like today, students who want to get ahead have to intern in jobs that are essentially “try outs” for the jobs they will hold when they graduate from college.

I remember some of my summer jobs: salad “girl” at an Officer’s Club, dessert “girl” at that same club, greeter at a lake resort, envelope stuffer at that same resort, neighborhood newspaper girl… not anything that actually contributed to my formal education. Those jobs, however, did contribute to me learning the importance of holding a job, showing up on time, and working for my wages.

Although my jobs weren’t anything like today’s society (almost) requires of our college students, my jobs did actually fulfill their roles of teaching me that, in short, money doesn’t grow on trees and that you have to strive to be the best you can be in any situation in which you find yourself.

Of course, as I proof read this blog I am struck with how I totally lost the initial point of my blog… Summer is over and students are back in school… whether they still live at home or they are off to other locations… those of us who are parents miss them terribly.

Four New Authors to the Cozy Mystery Site…

September 7, 2008

Now that I am officially back from my niece’s beautiful wedding, I thought that I would get back to posting different things on the site. By saying “officially back” I mean that I have finally gotten caught up with all of the things that awaited me here at home… Six load of laundry, dusting and vacuuming, grocery shopping, bills to be paid, ETC.

I have added four new authors to the site that you all have let me know about, who I have introduced on the “What’s New” page of the Cozy Mystery Site, but want to officially post them in this blog, also. Thank you so much for telling me about them… if you all are like me… you can never have enough authors from which (or is it “whom”?) to choose!

C. S. Challinor: Those of you who love seasonal mysteries will enjoy knowing that the first novel in Challinor’s Rex Graves Mystery Series is set in an English hotel during the Christmas season…

Patricia Harrington: Harrington is an ex-teacher who now writes two mystery series…

Ellen Elizabeth Hunter: Hunter writes a mystery series which featuring house preservation… something she knows a lot about…

Radine Trees Nehring: Nehring writes a mystery series which is set in the Arkansas Ozarks, which features a “senior sleuth” who enjoys sleuthing with a retired police detective…

Again… I'm Back…

September 5, 2008

I am back from my niece’s wedding>>> What a wonderful time! My sister (mother of the bride) sure worked her tail off! She decided to do the wedding herself, rather than hire a wedding planner, and let me tell you… weddings are now a big business! It’s amazing to me how many little details there are to take care of>>> from the little gift bags my sister left at the hotel to the gorgeous flower arrangements, hors d’oeuvres, main dinner course, location of the wedding, location of the reception, musicians for the wedding, wedding cake, photographer, monogrammed napkins, ETC. (I think that you can get the picture!)

My husband and I were married as an elopement thus saving loads of money and time. (We also managed to get the down payment for our first house in lieu of gifts.) I guess that we were just less romantic, more practical, and the fact that he was stationed in Panama at the time sort of ruled out a big wedding with lots of friends and family flying in… It’s one thing for people to go to another state for a wedding… but we drew the line at another country!

It’s good to be back home. I just thought that I would check in and say hello to any site readers who happen to catch the blog…
