Even More Historical Themed Mystery Authors…

October 20, 2008

I seem to be on a roll! Here are four new (to the Cozy Mystery Site) authors who write mystery novels with a historical theme. (These four authors were recommended by readers of the site.)

Caroline Roe  (aka Medora Sale): The Chronicles of Isaac of Girona Mystery Series are set in the mid 1300s, and feature a blind doctor in Spain (written as Roe) AND the John Sanders Mystery Series (written as Sale) features a detective in Canada…

P. B. Ryan: The Gilded Age Mystery Series features a governess from Ireland, and is set in Boston after the Civil War…

Kate Sedley: The Roger the Chapman Mystery Series takes place in medieval England and features a peddler/sleuth…

Sarah Stewart Taylor: The Sweeney St. George Mystery Series features a history professor in Vermont, who happens to be particularly interested in funerary art…

To Read, OR Not To Read…

October 18, 2008

You know, it’s sort of interesting to take a look at your life and figure out why you do the things you do. I don’t mean why we do crazy, idiotic things… Those are just freakish mistakes that we make. I mean, for example, why do we… let’s say… READ?!?

I grew up in a household where reading was NOT important. It was not something that was pushed, emphasized, cajoled, expected… (You probably get my drift!) Yet, whenever my father was stationed at a new location, one of the first things that I did was to ask my mother to drive me to the local library. To my knowledge, I am the only one of the four children who showed the least bit of interest in reading.

I remember making my way through Edna Ferber’s classics (So Big was a particular favorite of mine) and Pearl S. Buck (The Good Earth was another favorite.) Followed by classics like Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. I also went through a “reading stage” where I couldn’t get enough Greek/Roman mythology.

When I lived in Chile, since I spoke English (rather!) fluently, the English teacher let me read mythology during the regular English class time. (My parents sent all four of us to Chilean schools, where we were the only native English speakers.) Little did I know that Sister Serena was starting me on a path that would include a love for all television shows that deal with ancient civilizations!

(More on these ramblings later…)

History Theme Mystery Novels…

October 16, 2008

I just added four more reader-recommended mystery authors to the Cozy Mystery Site. They all have a History Theme in common.

Ann McMillan: Civil War Mystery Series… As the name of the series indicates, it takes place during the Civil War. It is set in Virginia, and as an added bonus, there is a Herbalist Theme…

Paula Paul (aka Paula Carter): Dr. Alexandra Gladstone Mystery Series… The series takes place in Victorian England… AND as Paula Carter: Murder by Design Mystery Series… This series is set in Alabama and involves a decorator and her assistant…

Sharon Kay Penman: Medieval Mystery Series… This particular series is set in England during the late twelfth century… AND the Welsh Trilogy AND the Henry & Eleanor Trilogy… Neither of the trilogies are not mysteries…

Candace Robb: Owen Archer Mystery Series… This series sleuths are Owen (the archbishop’s Captain of the Guard/Spy) and his apothecary wife. The series takes place during the 1300s in Great Britain… AND the Margaret Kerr Mystery Series… This series takes place during the 1200s in Edinburgh.
