British Mystery Mini-Series is a Mystery to Me!

November 21, 2009

Su just wrote in a comment the other day which I have decided to post as an entry. She has a question about a British mystery show that aired about ten years ago, and wondered if any of us know the name of the series.

“This is really a long shot, but maybe you mystery fans could help me remember the name of a British Television mini-series (or multi-part movie) that I completely loved and want to see in it’s entirety. It was maybe 10 years ago give or take a decade 😉
I can’t remember anything but snippets and bits of memories. So I thought I’d throw out those bits and pieces and see if anyone can put the clues together and figure out what show it is. A mystery challenge for you!

OK so here it is – these are all the things I can remember about the show.

The title of the show was a play on words.
The main character was a woman maybe in her 30s.
She ended up driving through Scotland searching for something – i think it had to do with her father.
There was a man she met who joined in the quest. The letter K suggests itself here.
The banter between them was such clever repartee that it reminded me of Robert Heinlein’s dialogue writing.

Now is where I get really confused. I remember a young side-kick who either was the same actor as the young Scot who played Merry in Lord of the Rings or looked a lot like him. But this may be from another show altogether. Double score if you can name both shows.”

If any of you think that you might know the name of the show, please feel free to send us a comment!

PS… Dominic Monaghan is the actor who played Merry in Lord of the Rings. The first time I saw him was when he played Hetty Wainthropp’s very young, detective side-kick on the Hetty Wainthropp Investigates series, which if you haven’t seen, you should definitely check out.

My Current Mystery Book…

November 19, 2009

I know that I have been remiss in writing an entry… I usually don’t take this long a break from writing, but I have been trying to get some things accomplished before my daughter comes home for her Thanksgiving break. She’ll be home for only two full days, and then will be going back to Cambridge for the remainder of the semester. I have a lot to get done before she arrives.

I thought that I would quickly “check in” and mention that I am continuing to make my way through my holiday themed mystery books. I enjoyed the first of the Special Pennyfoot Country Club mysteries (by Kate Kingsbury) and am reading a “Jessica Fletcher” (Donald Bain) holiday mystery right now. As I have mentioned before, I am becoming a rather slow reader, so I am hoping that I will be able to make it through a couple other holiday mysteries before our calendars change to 2010. (Can you believe it’s been ten years since all of that hub-bub about our computers not being able to change from the 1900s to the 2000s?!?)

How about you all? What are you reading? Drop us a line if you wouldn’t mind telling us about your current book… even if you’re not reading a mystery!

New York Public Library Presents "Mysteries: Amateur Sleuths and Feline Detectives" Panel

November 13, 2009

Mystery author Evan Marshall was kind enough to let me know about this fantastic panel discussion of mystery book authors which will be taking place this coming Tuesday (Nov. 17) at the New York Public Library.

I love the theme of the panel! Evan said his “Fellow panelists are the fabulous Jane Cleland, Joani Ascher, Cynthia Blair, with Daryl Wood Gerber moderating.” >>> That’s a great mystery author panel!

Evan was kind enough to include the following details:

“Here’s the info from the NYPL website:

Tuesday, Nov 17 — 6:30 PM
“Cozy Mysteries: Amateur Sleuths and Feline Detectives,” with moderator, Daryl Wood Gerber, and panelists, Joani Ascher, Cynthia Baxter, Jane K. Cleland and Evan Marshall of Mystery Writers of America / New York Chapter.’ ”

“In this lively discussion about “cozy” mysteries, the moderator and a panel of stellar authors face the tough “cozy” questions: What distinguishes a cozy from a traditional mystery? Humor? Charm? Suspense? Why do so many readers love books that feature cats? (And can a cat really solve a crime?) The panel, whose amateur sleuths run the gamut from antiques business owner to New York Sanitation Department employee-reveal all!”

The panel will be held at the Mid-Manhattan Library, which is apparently at 455 Fifth Avenue. The site also has a telephone number for all of you New Yorkers who are interested in attending: 917-ASK-NYPL (917-275-6975) (I just got that information from the New York Public Library site and since I have never visited the NYPL, I would suggest that you verify the address.)

I love the Cat Mystery Book Series theme that they will be discussing… Can cats really solve mysteries? I guess that the lucky New Yorkers who attend the panel will find out on Tuesday night.  If cats can solve mysteries, Sprite (our 15 year old puppy) will simply have to learn a new trick, or be put to shame!
