Three New Cozy Mystery Series Coming in May

April 4, 2014

I don’t know if any of you have been keeping an eye on the Cozy Mystery site’s new page entitled New Cozy Mystery Book Series, but if you have, you already know that three of our Cozy Mystery authors are embarking on new series during the month of May. Wow! We had three new series during April, and now we have three more Cozy Mystery series to look forward to. Personally, I think that’s pretty neat!

Dorothy Cannell, that’s right, Dorothy Cannell of the very popular Ellie Haskell Mystery Series (The Thin Woman, etc.) is starting the new Florence Norris Mystery Series. Florence is a housekeeper for the very upper-crust Stodmarsh family. She works at Mullings, the country house that has been in their family for three hundred years. The series takes place during the 1930s. Murder at Mullings will be the first in Cannell’s new Florence Norris Mystery Series.

Hannah Dennison of the Vicky Hill Exclusive! Mystery Series is finally back, and after a three year absence she will be bringing us the new Kat Stanford Mystery Series. Kat Stanford was formerly a television celebrity host who now owns the Honeychurch Hall Antique Shop in England. Kat and her mother, Iris, had been planning on opening a fabulous antique shop, however Iris bought a shabby, old carriage house on a country estate that is not in a good location for an antique shop. Besides all of this bad news, Kat is discovering she doesn’t know everything there is to know about her mother. Murder at Honeychurch Hall is the first of the Kat Stanford Mystery Series.

Mary Ellen Hughes, the author of the Craft Corner Mystery Series as well as the Maggie Olenski Mystery Series, will be giving us the new Pickled and Preserved Mystery Series. This series takes place in Cloverdale, a small town in New York. Piper Lamb is the owner of Piper’s Picklings, a shop which specializes in pickels and preserves. Piper is given a great opportunity to showcase her pickles at the Cloverdale Fair, but instead of highlighting her pickles, she ends up having to highlight her sleuthing skills. The Pickled Piper is the first mystery in the Pickled and Preserved Mystery Series.

I don’t have any new Holiday Cozy Mysteries to tell you about this month, but I believe there are a couple I’ll be telling you about next month.

Upcoming Television Mystery Movies for April 2014

March 31, 2014

TCM will be celebrating both its 20th Anniversary as well as John Wayne during April. If you happen to be a John Wayne fan, you should be excited about the 58 movies TCM will be airing. (I know my younger brother is looking forward to those movies. they will be airing them (mostly?) during April 21 and the 25th, which explains the fact that I don’t have very many mystery movies showing that week.

Since they are celebrating an anniversary, they will be showing a few shows that might interest those of you who are especially interested in Hollywood’s Golden era. I have annotated some of those movies. As usual, I have included a few movies that are not mysteries, but that I particularly enjoy, and think some of you might also enjoy seeing them.

New Orleans, Here We Come!

March 30, 2014

Here’s a quick post to let you know my husband and I are heading out to New Orleans this morning. Google maps says it’s a nine hour trip, and I am hoping it (they?) is (are?) correct. Our son is going to be holding down the fort here, even though Sprite (our puppy) is no longer with us. Having him here let’s me enjoy my trips.

My husband and I are scoping out apartments for our daughter. Her clerkship is over in August and she will be starting another one the next week. So we will be trying to find a place for her to rent for the year she is in New Orleans. I hope we find a place she’ll be happy and SAFE. She has e-mailed us several complexes that she has looked into, which will make our scouting trip a little easier.

We still haven’t decided whether we are going to turn the scouting trip into a vacation. We’ll wait and see how many places we end up looking at, and how tired we get.

I’ve got a few posts that will be going up automatically: the TV Mystery Movies and the May New Releases. Other than that, I’ll probably be chatting about our trip. Hopefully it will be more amusing than just talking about the apartment situation.

I downloaded the latest Alexander McCall Smith No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency (The Minor Adjustment Beauty Salon) and his last 44 Scotland Street (Bertie Plays the Blues) as well as Spencer Quinn’s The Dog Who Knew Too Much and some Agatha Christie, Ruth Rendell, and Ngaio Marsh mysteries. We should be able to agree on at least one audio mystery!
