Upcoming Mysteries on Turner Classic Movies for December 2023

November 24, 2023

I’m going to be posting a separate blog entry with all of the Christmas movies I could find that will be aired on the Turner Classic Movies channel during December 2023, so I haven’t included them on this list – as I have done in the past. I do want to tell you about something I watch every time they air them on the channel: the old (as in very old!) short travel films by James A. FitzPatrick. They, of course, are all from way before I was born, but I still really enjoy seeing them – even though they are very dated. They show places as they were years and years ago. Here are the four that will be shown during December 2023:

Also, there will be quite a few Alfred Hitchcock mystery movies on the Turner Classic Movies channel during December, so make sure to take a look at this list – if you’re interested in his movies.

Holiday Cozy Mysteries Vs. Chronological Order…

November 22, 2023

This is my favorite time of year. I have mentioned many times that we live way down in San Antonio, Texas. Most of the year it is hot and extremely muggy. (We broke our “over 100 degree” days record this year!) It’s actually pretty hot down here at the beginning of October – but even so, once October arrives, I celebrate some cooler weather AND my Holiday Cozy Mystery books. I especially enjoy Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Hannukah books set in cold weather, so I can “experience” a season we don’t have down here.

I know I asked this question years ago but here goes again:

Are you a stickler for reading your Cozy Mystery series in chronological order? (I am!)

Or, when a favorite series has a Holiday Cozy Mystery released way ahead of where you are, do you skip ahead?

As I stated above, I’m a stickler for chronological storylines, however, sometimes I just can’t wait and find myself skipping ahead in the series.

How about you? If you’re on book #6 in a Cozy Mystery series and the author releases a Christmas Cozy as her/his 13th book in the series, do you jump ahead and read it? (I do!)

Tara Lush: Coffee Lover’s Mystery Series

November 19, 2023

Grounds for Murder (A Coffee Lover's Mystery Book 1)It is time again for me to talk about another of the Most Popular and Recommended Cozy Mystery Series.  And as the title of this post reveals, this month I read Tara Lush‘s Grounds for Murder, the first book in her Coffee Lover’s Mystery Series.

This series, the first of three books so far, is based in Devil’s Beach, Florida and features Lana Lewis who is 30 years-old.  She is a recently laid off journalist and now is a barista who is managing a coffee bar (called Perkatory) owned by her father. Her father is a bit of an older new age hippie, and he does not participate very much in the business. Since the coffee bar was started by Lana’s late mother a number of years ago, Lana is pretty familiar with what it takes to be a barista. Nevertheless, Lana is very insecure about her talents, and she has been relying on her star employee, Fab.

Fab, however, abruptly quits to go to work for Perkatory’s chief competitor on the island. And, inevitably, Fab is soon found dead. He either jumped or was pushed from the roof of the Perkatory building (where he had been living).

Lana, of course, quickly gets working on trying to figure out what happened. She does this partially in the guise of a journalist since she arranges with the local paper to have her article about the death published as a feature. Investigating the death also gives Lana the chance to get to know the local police chief quite a bit better. The police chief, Noah, is quite a looker, and Lana is very attracted to him. However, Lana is recently divorced from her cheating older husband, so Lana has sworn off men, at least for a while. Exactly how long this vow will last, I will leave it up to you to discover.

Lana is something of an unusual main character for a Cozy Mystery nowadays. Although she is in Devil’s Beach running Perkatory because she was laid off from a Miami paper and because of her fairly recent break-up, she is not running Perkatory and working as a barista out of love for the job. She actually loved being a journalist, and she misses that job very much. Her journalistic instincts are pretty much what drives her to try to solve the mystery since doing so will get her a great story to write and publish.

Devil’s Beach and the coffee shop provide the small town setting so beloved by cozy mystery fans, (especially me). Personally, I love a good cup of coffee, and Perkatory seems to be just the type of shop in which to find a good one. Lana is an appealing character and is something of a change, she is not managing the coffee shop in order to escape her previous life. Partly because of this, Lana is somewhat insecure, but is trying to make her new life be the best she can. I really enjoyed Grounds for Murder and I look forward to reading the other books in the Coffee Lover’s Mystery Series (if I can ever find the time!).

Back In San Antonio…

November 17, 2023

DC5

My husband and I just got back from visiting our daughter, her husband, and their three and a half year old daughter.

We had a great time in the Washington, D.C. area. One of the excursion we always take when we’re out there is a visit to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. It’s a terrific zoo — and always reminds me of the days our daughter and son were itty-bitty little ones. (My husband was stationed in the D.C. area years ago.) We love that zoo!

While my husband and I had a great time during our ten day visit, AND while we miss the three of them, it will be a lot less hectic when the two of us settle back into our laid-back, familiar routine. And, it will be good to see our son (and our “puppy” Cocoa) again.

BUT — I already miss the hustle and bustle of having a three year old in the house. Thank goodness we have our weekly portal visits!
