Foyle’s War Television Mystery Series

August 20, 2020

When Inspector Morse stopped production, Foyle’s War was to be its ITV short-term replacement. However, since it was such a huge success, more seasons were made. (Lucky for us!)

The series takes place in England during WWII. Foyle (played by Michael Kitchen) is a British police detective during the early 1940s who does not want to work as a civilian detective. He is forced to remain a non-military detective. His assignment is to work the crimes not deemed of a military nature, and he excels at this job he doesn’t particularly want.

Foyle does not drive, making it necessary for him to have an assigned driver – enter Honeysuckle Weeks (as Sam – as in Samantha.) Anthony Howell plays Foyle’s sergeant – a man wounded in the war >>> both emotionally & physically. The acting is terrific!~

Foyle’s War series takes place in quaint British villages – however, the devastation of WWII is apparent. Large stately mansions have been converted into hospitals for the troops, cobblestone streets wind through bombed-out sections of villages, it is not all cozy, quaint, and picturesque.

Michael Kitchen displays his pensive & expressive facial mannerisms, which is normal fare for him. Honeysuckle Weeks is too adorable for words. The productions are far superior to most US detective shows, the ambiance, settings, wardrobe, hair styles (especially Sam’s) are exactly what I would expect of the time and location of the series.

Anthony Horowitz both created and wrote scripts for the Foyle’s War series. Horowitz is responsible for writing other British series: Bravo to him!

The only negative I have about the show is when WWII ends. Why mess with perfection? I know I am in the decided minority on this, though. Even though Christopher Foyle didn’t want to investigate civilian crimes during WWII, I wanted him to so!

As of this post, Foyle’s War is available on Acorn.

Cozy Mystery News – August 2020

August 15, 2020

August has a fair amount of news for Cozy Mystery fans…

First up, Allison Brook (aka Marilyn Levinson) will be releasing A Deadly Event. I’m not sure if this is going to be part of the Haunted Library Mystery Series, but it is going to be about a doctor dying in a chocolate fountain and the sleuth is going to be a librarian, so it certainly seems likely to be the 5th entry in the Haunted Library Mystery Series.

Next up, Jenn McKinlay (aka Josie Belle & Lucy Lawrence) has confirmed that she will be adding a 13th book to the Cupcake Bakery Mystery Series, with an entry titled For Batter or Worse. Melanie Cooper and her fiance will need to solve a murder while preparing for their wedding.

Terrie Farley Moran will be taking over the “Murder, She Wrote” book series, starting with Murder: She Wrote: A Killing in a Koi Pond, in which an old college friend who Jessica is visiting becomes the primary witness in her husband’s murder.

Finally, Ashley Weaver will be starting a new series starting with A Peculiar Combination, in which a safecracker working with the British government during the WWII Blitz in London to help expose a German spy in exchange for her freedom.

Two New Cozy Mystery Series and One New Holiday Cozy Coming September 2020

August 13, 2020

September will have two new Cozy series by established site authors and a new Christmas Cozy!

First, Melissa Bourbon and Wendy Lyn Watson will be releasing Murder in Devil’s Cove, the first in their new Book Magic Mystery Series. Pippin Lane Hawthorne and Cora Lane are cousins living on opposite sites of the country (the first in Devil’s Cove, North Carolina, the other in Laurel Point, Oregon). However, they both have different attitudes to their shared gift – the ability to read both the future and the past through reading books. Melissa Bourbon also writes the Magical Dressmaking Mystery Series, the Bread Shop Mystery Series (as Winnie Archer) and the Lola Cruz Mystery Series (as Misa Ramirez). Wendy Lyn Watson is the author of the Mystery a la Mode Mystery Series and the Pet Boutique Mystery Series (as Annie Knox).

The other new series will be Lee Hollis‘s May and Sandra Mystery Series, which will start with Murder at the PTA. Sandra Wallage is the newly elected PTA president, while Maya Kendrick is a private detective. Both are unhappy that someone is using Portland High as a source for a gossip website, but when the pair track down and attempt to confront the columnist, they find them dead. Though the police consider the case a suicide, neither are satisfied with that conclusion, feeling that someone else was involved. Lee Hollis is also the author of the Hailey Powell Mystery Series and the Desert Flowers Mystery Series.

Finally, we’ll be getting one Christmas themed Cozy, Dying in a Winter Wonderland, the fifth entry in the Christmas-themed Year-Round Christmas Mystery Series by Vicky Delany. Christmas has once again arrived in Rudolph, New York, and Merry Wilkinson is looking forward to what will hopefully be a restful holiday, but a local bride is looking to move up her wedding and is pressuring Merry to help make sure the decorations are ready for the new, earlier deadline. Unfortunately, the wedding will never happen, as the bride’s fiance is found murdered at the proposed venue, and it will once again be up to Merry to help solve the case before the end of the holiday season.
