    Even though you listed it in December new releases, Murder for the Halibut by Liz Lipperman will also be released 12/31/12. You kindly reminded us of several books that will be released on 12/31 on this January. Thanks!

  5. I’m just beginning to explore cozy mysteries and really like them. Just one question do any of these have explicit language or love scenes? Thank you for this great website. Blessings, Susan F

    • Unfortunately, Susan F, a lot of authors (or their publishers) think they need to have a few “words” sprinkled throughout their books. I would recommend that you take a look at this list of Cozy Mystery authors and see if there are some who you might enjoy reading. (I posted the question a while ago, and many other Cozy Mystery readers had many great suggestions.)

      Mysteries with No Profanity

      • Susan, One thing that I have discovered through my times at exploring books on the library shelves is to NOT think that just because a book might be in the Religious or spiritual shelves is no reason to assume these books won’t have any profanity in them. Just because a book is listed as “Christian fiction” is no reason to think that explicit content and profanity won’t be in the book. I have found that some of these books also contain the profanity, and to a great extent.
        I guess the only way any reader really knows what is in between the pages of these books is to just read the book then keep lists of the authors and publishers who use this language.
        I would suppose, also, that some readers will have more tolerance of the amount of profanity, the type of profanity, and what words are used. I would think that some people would be offended if there was ANY type of profanity. I know I will tolerate some cuss words more than others. So I think we all just need to read the book and then decide for ourselves. I just don’t want anyone else telling me what I can read and what I can’t read. I am a big girl( 67!!). I can decide for myself.
        Maybe that is where a library card would come in handy. This way a person could borrow a book from the library. Then if the book does have content that the reader finds objectionable, the reader hasn’t spent any money on. Sure does seem to be a more easy, and less expensive solution to finding out what books, authors, publishers are more suitable for each individual reader. I just think it would be a lot easier if some of us would just do our own research than to just depend on what others might think.

        • Oh I agree. I do have a library card and am on the homebound program where they deliver books. Thankfully I’ve never wasted any money on a book with things I object to in it. Once in a while I have started a book, found the curse words and back it went unread. You’re correct unfortunately there was a Christian author I started reading recently her books sounded fascinating and the first chapter was unacceptable to me from that stand point. I believe that’s the only Christian author I’ve ever read which had cursing, so I’m truly blessed indeed. Thank you for sharing your opinion and your advice. Merry Christmas, Susan F

          • Susan F, how nice that your library delivers your books. I’m not sure if ours does, or not. I remember seeing mobile libraries years ago, but don’t think I’ve seen one for a long time.

      In addition to the 20 books by Katherine Hall Page (oftentimes recommended by readers on this blog) wrote featuring a minister’s wife (already listed at the blog site Danna suggested), a few other cozy series come to mind involving a church setting. Emilie Richards main sleuth in her series (5 books), ‘Ministry is Murder’, is also a minister’s wife. In Jennifer Stanley’s ‘Hope Street Church’ series (only 3 books), the ‘detective’ group of friends is based in a church. Also, Mary Daheim’s Bed and Breakfast series (27 books) involves a lot of activities at their church – oftentimes humorous. I wouldn’t consider any of these series as ‘faith-based’, though. Generally they are good ‘reads’.

      Most of the cozy mysteries I read don’t involve any profanity. Occasionally I will find within a story a profanity word where the author normally never mentions one – I usually just skip over it. However, it may be dictated by the type of character the author has developed for that particular story.

      Here are just a couple of authors not mentioned on the blog list:

      Sally Goldenbaum – Seaside Knitters series

      Anne Canadeo – Black Sheep Knitting Mysteries (Also co-authors [under name of Katherine Spencer]
      with Thomas Kinkade the Christian fiction series, ‘Cape Light’.)

      Monica Ferris – Needlecraft Shop

      Elizabeth Duncan – Penny Brannigan Mysteries (English)

      Hazel Holt – Sheila Malory series (English)

      JoAnna Carl – Chocoholic Mysteries

      Sheila Connelly – Orchard Mysteries, Museum Mysteries

      Valerie Wolzein – Susan Henshaw series

      The following two authors have started new series in an Amish setting. The characters are a mixture of Amish and non-Amish:

      Amanda Flower (Appleseed Creek Mysteries). The first book of this series was published last summer, the second book’s release date is 2/2013.

      Laura Bradford – Amish Mystery series. First one out fall 2012, next one due to be released 3/2013.

      And, I don’t think the delightful, humorous Anne George ‘Southern Sisters’ mysteries (8 books) have any profanity words, but it has been several years since I read it. This series, too, is often recommended by readers of this blog.

      • Thank you, MJ, for all of the No Profanity suggestions! I just added them to the Mysteries with No Profanity theme page.

        (I like my truly Cozy Mystery books to be without profanity, also. My authors run along the same way as yours do: There may be an occasional word, depending on the character saying it. My sleuths usually have big enough vocabularies that they don’t have to rely on expletives.)

  7. It took long of enough to get it but GONE GIRL by Gillian Flynn was great. Could not put it down. A very strange story but I would highly recommend it. Danna thank you again for your monthly list of books.

    • Jerry, if you haven’t already tried Hazel Holt’s Mrs. Malory Mystery Series, you might give them a try. She is one of my favorites. Also, Ann Granger’s Markby & Mitchell Village Whodunit Mystery Series is a nice series to follow.

  12. Love the Emma Lord series as well as the Lucy Stone series. Looks like some very good reading for 2013. January and November are my least favorite months of the year. But with the new Christmas/Holiday books coming out each November and those new releases for January that you have listed here maybe January won’t be so bad this year.

  14. I’m very interested in the new Sue Grafton Kinsey Millhone story. Sounds like a different take than the usual novels. Should be pretty interesting. I’m currently reading her V is for Vengence and looking forward to more of one of my favorite detectives.

  17. Looking for a little help this evening, please. I started two series and now can’t remember the name or author. One was about a young lady working in a mansion/museum and wanting to become the curator of the collection. Of course, she solves the murder and is given the job by the patriarch of the family. The second is about a lady and her daughter. The lady has a mean ex-mother-in-law who she finally wins over. The lady helps the local detective solve the murder and they end up dating. Thanks so much for your help. Greatly appreciated!

    • The first series is the Manor of Murder series by Julie Hyzy. The first book is Grace Under Pressure. It is a wonderful series and I am looking forward to the fourth book which is coming out next July. She also writes the White House Chef series, another series I really look forward to.

  18. I just finished “EXTRA CREDIT”. Maggie Barbieri’s 5th mystery in her 101 series. It was as good as the others. Great Cozy. Read it if you need a really good mystery.
