Hmmm, what would you say to Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes having a much younger sister? I’d say it’s great — if she’s as intelligent as her brothers are! And, fortunately for us, Enola Holmes is a very enterprising, intelligent, and determined young lady.
Enola Holmes is a 2020 Netflix mystery movie that Millie Bobby Brown both starred in and produced. The script is based on Nancy Springer’s first Enola Holmes mystery book. (I believe it’s a “tween” or young adult focused book.)
Enola has been raised by her suffragette mother (beautifully played by Helena Bonham Carter) to be very self-sufficient. It is no wonder that Sherlock has such phenomenal skills!
Enola wakes up one morning to find that her mother has left their countryside estate. By putting many clues together, Enola deduces that she must go to London to finder her mother, who is on a very important mission.
Enola disguises herself as a boy and embarks on a journey to London. She is joined by a very privileged runaway boy who has no apparent survival skills. The two of them arrive in London where thy go their on ways, though through many adventures, they are reunited.
Enola hasn’t seen her brothers in a very long long time. When she is reunited with them, Mycroft (who is her legal guardian) puts her in a girls’ boarding school, where she will be “tamed”. Sherlock, on the other hand, thinks she’s a terrific, very intelligent girl who does not belong in that Victorian ladies’ boarding school.
It turns out that the lord (runaway boy) is in grave danger. It’s a good thing Enola is there to help him.
The wardrobe department, acting, Victorian setting, and plot are all terrific. This is a fun family movie that my husband and I enjoyed a lot.

Unfortunately, I don’t have Netflix, but, particularly as I’m a Brit, I’d definitely watch this if I get the chance.
Thank you for the summary – what a good plotline! – and recommendation.
I’m a great Holmes fan (who isn’t?), and this rings true, being authentic to the genre and the era.
Thank you so much.

Zarayna, if you do get the chance to watch it, I hope you enjoy it!
Laura Roys says
The Netflix movies were lots of fun. All the Enola Holmes books are fantastic too! There are five or six in the series, I believe. Quick, fun reads.

Laura, I haven’t seen the sequel yet – I’m glad to hear it’s fun as well.

I saw the films before reading the books. I really enjoyed both the film version and the book version. I see them as two different stories. As a children’s librarian, I don’t agree with the books being shelved in the children’s area. I think it’s better in a Young Adult section. I also know the books are very popular with the 4th and 5th graders. Overall, great stories.

Jayne, that’s good to hear – as long as both are good, different is fine when you need to adapt for a different medium like book -> film.
Mrs. Ainee C. Beland says
Sounds interesting but not for me; I am enjoying my Britbox subscription and watching my favorite program that I can’t ever get enough of this: Home Away from Home; as often as it is viewed in our household, it is our one favorite. Britbox offer much more, but we return to this one show again and again. Our next favorite is Cassandra Crossing with Richard Harris and Sophia Loren; I don’t think they are goodly match in this film but such as it is.
I will miss these programs when I am not able to renew our subscription; we’ve more bills than dough; in one instance BJ’s took money from our account to renew our membership without our permission but there surely is an explanation as to why we did not receive our membership renewal invoice since we did not opt for auto payment as they seem to have done; or there’s another with dibs to our account. It is wrong of them to have done so.
I am sorry and thank you for the news on Enola Holmes.

Ainee, you’re welcome, and I hope things go better for you soon!

Shirley, it’s actually a movie (well, there’s also a sequel I haven’t seen yet…), and you’re welcome!

I don’t have Netflix but might need to get to watch the movies you tell us about. I’m keeping a list if I do. Thank you for all you share!
