I just noticed you have Paige Shelton listed as Donna Shelton.

P, thanks for the correction! I was probably looking at Donna Leon when I wrote that.

Oh, GOODIE! A new Paige Shelton! LOL, you don’t realize what a flurry of activity each new books sets off at my house! First, I grab that author’s index card and add the book (or a new card for a new series), then I go to Goodreads and add it to my “To Read” shelf, then I go to Thriftbooks and put it on my wishlist, THEN I open the appropriate Word file (each author has one) and add the book to the list. After that, if it is a new series, I take my little labels and make a sheet for the new author so that I can number the series as I get the books.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Bek, wow, it certainly sounds as if you have a very dedicated system!
Bek says
LOL, that’s what happens when you have both mild ADD AND mild OCD! You can’t keep track of stuff, but you obsessively organize so that you CAN!
Susy S says
Bek,
That is way too much work for me. I just add them to my ‘new release’ list and my wishlist excel files.
Now when I actually buy them, it is a little more complex. First I add to the individual author tab and comprehensive list in one excel file. Then I remove them from the two above files. I also add them to my ‘unread books’ file and record purchase details like price, any discount, where I bought it and whether I used a gift card or a credit card in my 2018 book purchase file.
Because my memory can cause me to ignore my lists and I end up buying the same book more than once, I keep all my receipts for the year, just in case I have to return a book (I did get one once that was a bad print run, which is pretty unusual these days).
Bek says
LOL, I repeat, OCD. Thankfully, it is very mild. As I’m sitting here now, I have no fewer than 4 lists in front of me, keeping my ADD in check!
Susy S says
Bek, Ever noticed that we reward people with low level OCD because they are so neat and organized, but then when it goes beyond what many people think is ‘normal’, it is suddenly a bad thing? I suspect there are many of us who love books that are a little OCD. At least many of the book folks I know are.
I was explaining to someone that I keep my books in alphabetical order by author and then by copyright date, within each series. If the author has written a book in a series out of order (I have found one or two, so I know it happens), then the books must be in the correct series chronology. I also keep my unread books separated from those I have read, just because it is easier to grab an unread book when I am not looking for a specific book to read.
I wasn’t always quite so obsessive about keeping them in order, but with about 2500 books, I would never find what I am looking for without it.
For the past year, I have been packing up my books and moving them across country. I have been packing in a very specific way and labeling each box so that when it comes time to unpack, I will not go crazy trying to find the right book or allowing enough space as I am shelving them.

Can’t wait. I wonder how many will use the word “ensconced?”
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Cz, that’s a very specific question! Hmm, I wonder too now?
Derek S says
I really enjoy the Bethany Blake series.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Derek, thanks for the recommendation!
