I recently updated my Cats are Cozy entry, so thought I should give the dogs in our lives equal time. I know that cats are typically what most of us think of when we think of a “cozy animal”… to go with the white-haired sleuth, no less! Gone are those days! Now we have young sleuths who manage their professions along with their family lives. But… I’m not going to be focusing on the sleuths… rather on their dogs. So, here are the site’s authors with dog themes in their mysteries.
I will start out with the White House Pet Detectives: Tales of Crime and Mystery at the White House from a Pet’s Eye View. It is an anthology which was edited by Carole Nelson Douglas. In it, you will find stories by some of your favorite mystery authors.
There are some veterinarians and veterinary technicians who have series all of their own! Dr. Nightingale is the veterinarian in the Deirdre Quinn Nightingale Mystery Series by Lydia Adamson. And Karen Ann Wilson writes the Samantha Holt Mystery Series. While Samantha is not a full-fledged veterinarian, she is a veterinary technician.
Sparkle Abbey: Pampered Pet Mystery Series
Kristi Abbott: Gourmet Popcorn Shop Mystery Series (Sprocket is the sleuth’s Poodle)
Ellery Adams (aka Jennifer Stanley & J. B. Stanley) writes the Books by the Bay Mystery Series which features Olivia Limoges and her Standard Poodle (Captain Haviland), and a writers club… all of whom solve crimes!
Barbara Allan: Trash ‘n’ Treasures Mysteries Series
Annie’s Amish Inn Mystery Series (Beans is the sleuth’s English Bulldog)
Cynthia Baxter‘s series is the Reigning Cats & Dogs Mystery Series. The series name lets you know that this series will have puppies and dogs, galore!
Carol Lea Benjamin knows all about training dogs… and I don’t mean just her dog Dash! (Rachel Alexander Mystery Series)
Laurien Berenson writes the very popular cozy mystery series that features a Special Education teacher who participates in dog shows. (Melanie Travis Mystery Series)
Bethany Blake: Lucky Paws Petsitting Mystery Series
Michael Bond‘s Monsieur Pamplemousse Mystery Series has Pommes Frites, Monsieur’s dog. With a dog named French Fries, is it any wonder that Monsieur’s business is restaurants!?!
Duffy Brown has a mutt named Bruce Willis in her Consignment Shop Mystery Series.
Rita Mae Brown fans know Tee Tucker (the Corgi) in her Mrs. Murphy Mystery Series. But a lot of us are just becoming aware of Brown’s new series about foxhunting… and could you ever “foxhunt” without the horses and hounds?
V.M. Burns: Lilly Echosby Dog Club Mystery Series – Lilly is a recently divorced CPA who is a member of a dog club in Tennessee.
Nancy Bush writes the Jane Kelly Mystery Series which not only features Jane, but her Pug, The Binkster (aka Binks and Binkster)…
Claudius, a Siberian Husky/German Shepherd mix is Annie O’Hara’s sidekick in the mystery series that is written by Ann Campbell. Annie owns an antique shop, and Claudius owns Annie’s love and devotion! (Annie O’Hara & Claudius Mystery Series)
Laura Childs writes the Tea Shop Mystery Series, which is set in Charleston, South Carolina. And of course, Thea Browning’s dog’s name is Earl Gray.
Edie Claire writes the Leigh Koslow Mystery Series. While Leigh is not a veterinarian, her father is. Every once in a while Leigh works as a tech at her dad’s office. Also, the second book features a zoo vet and setting.
The Melissa Cleary cozy mystery series is known as the Dog Lovers Mystery Series, and features Jake, with his professor Jackie Walsh.
Nancy Coco writes the Candy Coated Mystery Series, which stars Allie, and features her dog, Mal.
Waverly Curtis writes the Barking Detective Mystery Series, which features Pepe (along with his owner) who thinks of himself as “Chihuahua extraordinaire”.
And no cozy mystery book list featuring dogs would be complete without Susan Conant‘s Holly Winter Mystery Series. Holly is a writer for Dog’s Life Magazine and also a dog trainer.
Kathi Daley: Zoe Donovan Mystery Series – Zoe does her sleuthing with her dog, Charlie.
Evelyn David is a pseudonym for two authors, one with a degree in Political Science and the other with a degree in Biology. They write the Sullivan Investigations Mystery Series which features an ex-policeman and his Irish Wolfhound (Whiskey) and a divorcée mortician who sleuth together…
Rae Davies writes the Dusty Deals Mystery Series, which features an Alaskan Malamut named Kiska.
Krista Davis: Paws and Claws Mystery Series
Devon Delaney: Cook-Off Mystery Series – Sherry Oliveri-Frazzelle is a competitive cook who works part-time with her dad AND Chutney, her Jack Russell Terrier in Connecticut.
Abigail Deuel: Mandy Bell DVM Mystery Series
J. F. Englert writes the Bull Moose Dog Run Mystery Series which features a Black Labrador Retriever (who is actually the narrator of this mystery series) and his often-confused owner…
Christy Evans writes the Georgiana Neverall Mystery Series which has, as its dog-stars, Daisy and Buddha, Georgie’s two darling Airedales…
Chrystle Fiedler writes the Natural Remedies Mystery Series, who gets a dachshund, Zeke.
Susan Furlong: Bone Gap Travellers Mystery Series – Brynn is an ex-Marine with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder who returns to Tennessee with her cadaver dog, Wilco.
Patricia Guiver writes the Pet Detective Mystery Series which features Delilah Doolittle and her Doberman Pinscher, Watson, who helps her solve her cases.
Victoria Hamilton writes the Vintage Kitchen Mystery Series, which features Jaymie Leighton, a collector of vintage cookware and cookbooks, and her three-legged Yorkie Poo, Hoppy.
David Handler writes the Stewart Hoag & Lulu Mystery Series. Lulu is Stewart’s faithful Basset Hound.
Sue Henry‘s first cozy series featured Jessie Arnold, a dog sled racer in Anchorage. She now has a new series about a widow in her 60s (Maxine McNab) who travels in her RV, accompanied by her Mini Dachshund, who could only be called “Stretch!” (Maxie & Stretch Mystery Series)
Gabriella Herkert writes the Animal Instinct Mystery Series, and her second book in that series features dogs.
Marion Moore Hill pens the Scrappy Librarian Mystery Series, which has the librarian and her collie/mongrel, Rip…
Suzette A. Hill writes the Reverend Oughterard Mystery Series. Bouncer (his dog) and Maurice (his cat) enjoy the British village life, even with all of the mysteries to solve…
Richard Houston: Books to Die For Mystery Series
Linda O. Johnston writes the Pet Rescue Mystery Series which features an animal advocate who runs a pet rescue agency.
Linda O. Johnston: Superstition Mystery Series – Rory Chasen is an employee at the Lucky Dog Boutique, and Pluckie is her “helper” dog.
Lee Charles Kelley is a dog trainer (along with being an author!) who writes the Continuing Adventures of Jack & Jamie Mystery Series which happens to feature a dog trainer/dog kennel owner/ex-NYPD detective.
Diane Kelly writes the Megan Luz Mystery Series which takes place in Fort Worth. Megan is a police officer who solves cases with her K-9 partner, Brigit.
Annie Knox (aka Wendy Lyn Watson): Pet Boutique Mystery Series
Amanda Lee (aka Gayle Trent) writes the Embroidery Mystery Series. Marcy owns an embroidery shop and has her loyal companion Irish Wolfhound, Angus, join her.
Kylie Logan (aka Miranda Bliss & Casey Daniels): Jazz Ramsey Mystery Series
Dixie Lyle: Whiskey, Tango, & Foxtrot Mystery Series
Nancy Martin: Miss Ruffles Mystery Series: Miss Ruffles, a very wealthy woman’s dog, inherits the woman’s estate!
Judi McCoy writes the Dog Walker Mystery Series which features Ellie and her dog Rudy… and, lest I forget, Ellie’s ability to communicate telepathically with her charges.
Jenn McKinlay writes the Library Lover’s Mystery Series, which stars librarian Lindsey and features her dog Heathcliff.
Leslie O’Kane writes the Allie Babcock Mystery Series. Don’t all dogs deserve a dog therapist? And, Allie not only solves their problems, but she also solves mysteries!
Spencer Quinn (aka Peter Abrahams) pens the Chet and Bernie Mystery Series. This mystery series is narrator by Chet, Bernie’s loyal side-kick, ex K-9 agent. (Well, technically, he never made it to graduation.)
David Rosenfelt writes the Andy Carpenter Mystery Series, in which Andy is a defense attorney who manages a dog rescue facility – with the help of his Golden Retriever, Tara.
Dana Stabenow‘s Kate Shugak mystery series has Mutt, a half-wolf/half Husky playing second fiddle to Kate, an ex-investigator and current sleuth, in Alaska. (Kate Shugak Mystery Series)
Nancy Jill Thames writes the Jillian Bradley Mystery Series which features a gardening columnist and her Yorkie.
Maggie Toussaint writes the Cleopatra Jones Mystery Series which features a golfing-accountant-sleuth and her side-kick, Madonna (a rather huge St. Bernard)…
Diane Vallere: Mad for Mod Mystery Series – Madison Night’s Rocky (Shih Tzu)
Peggy Webb writes the Southern Cousins Mystery Series which features a Basset Hound named Elvis.
Tracy Weber writes the Downward Dog Mystery Series, which features a German Shepherd named Bella.
Nina Wright, who writes the Whiskey Mattimoe Mystery Series which features Whiskey’s Afghan Hound, Abra.
Sue Owens Wright pens the Beanie & Cruiser Mystery Series which features a Basset Hound (Cruiser) and Beanie, a freelance reporter in Lake Tahoe…
There are two authors who feature dog trackers in their mystery series: Donna Ball‘s Raine Stockton Dog Mystery Series‘ dog is a Golden Retriever named Cisco. He keeps an eye on Raine Stockton, the North Carolina ex-tracker. Virginia Lanier‘s Jo Beth Sidden Mystery Series features a Bloodhound trainer and tracker.
While I was working on this Cozy Mystery Dog Theme List, I came across some books about dogs that look like they would be a lot of fun… They are not mysteries, but with titles like they have, if you are a dog lover, you might enjoy checking them out:

Sue says
I have found a great cozy mystery series by Lee Charles Kelley. He is by profession a dog trainer and that is the profession of his main character….so lots of dog stuff. He has three books out that I know of and I am finishing his last book now. The books are "A Nose for Murder", "Murder Unleashed" and "To Collar a Killer". These books are great fun. His website is leecharleskelley.com
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thank you so much, Sue, for bringing Lee Charles Kelley to our attention. We’re always on the lookout for more cozies!
Melissa says
Don’t forget Nina Wright’s Whiskey Mattimoe series featuring Abra the Afghan Hound…and Victoria Laurie’s Psychic Eye series features Eggy the dachshund, so named because of his love for fried eggs!!! =)
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thank you , Melissa, for bringing those two series to my attention!
Jill says
Please include the Carol Lea Benjamin series about Rachel Alexander and her dog Dashiell.
Thanks
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Jill,
I am so glad you caught my oversight! Thanks for letting me know… (I just added her, and wonder how I missed her!)
Leslie says
Lee Charles Kelley has more than the 3 books that Sue mentioned. The books in order are: A Nose for Murder (to be re-released as An Airedale Heiress) Murder Unleashed (to be re-released as Beagle Troubles) To Collar a Killer Twas the Bite before Christmas Dogged Pursuit Like a Dog with a Bone
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Leslie,
I am going to make up a page for Lee Charles Kelley very soon… I’m always on the look out for new cozy authors to add to the site. And, since you have listed all of the books, his page should be very easy for me to make!
Thank you!
Leslie says
To add to the books about dogs that aren’t cozies, you should think about adding this one:
The Dangerous Book for Dogs: A Parody by Rex and Sparky
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thanks, Leslie. You just did!
Elizabeth says
It’s very difficult to come by, but there is a wonderful British series of mystery novels featuring the training of hunting dogs in Scotland written by Gerald Hammond. They were written in the 80’s and 90’s. Surprisingly, I found several of them available in this country in Large Print editions.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thank you, Elizabeth, for telling us about Gerald Hammond’s John Cunningham Mystery Series…
Diane says
Not sure if it fits here or with supernatural, but a new series just started by Judi McCoy, the first book is Hounding the Pavement. The main character is a dog walker and can talk to dogs and her own dog is a reincarnation of her first dog.
Susan H says
LOVE these! I found the series earlier and fell in love. Gotta love a pup with “attitude”.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thanks for telling us about her!
Sara says
Pretty good, cozy mysteries by Spencer Quinn. His 2 books are: Dog On It and Thereby Hangs a Tail. They’re about a dog and his PI partner, told from the viewpoint of the dog
Rhonda says
I’ve read all the Spencer Quinn books. There are a couple others: To Fetch a Thief and The Dog Who Knew Too Much. All books are wonderful.
Bev says
Love this series!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thank you, Sara. I have another author who I am going to be posting to the site who also writes from the dog’s viewpoint: J. F. Englert.
I’ll add Spencer Quinn to my list of authors to post. Actually, I won’t have to add him as a new author… He’s Peter Abrahams!
Abrahams also writes a children’s mystery series: the Echo Falls Mystery Series. And, as I have said before, I love it when “established” best selling authors write books for children.
I also love it that he is now writing a cozy mystery series for those of us who prefer our mysteries Cozy!
Bunny says
Are there any books out there about Yorkies????
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Bunny,
Judi McCoy‘s series has Rudy, a little Yorkie as the star dog.
Greenway says
As noted in the feature article, Carolyn Haines’s Sarah Booth Delany novels always have the little princess-like Chablis (critical to the first of the series and all that follows), the Yorkie of Daddy’s Girl queen Tinkie. Perfect for each other. You wouldn’t expect a “Tinkie” to have a Tibetan Mastiff, or giant iguana, or anything, would you? Although the doglets are more likely to be described as “ferocious dust bunnies”, or such like, I think the disheveled canine mites found at Meg Langslow’s farm (Donna Andrews) or hidden in the shroudlike garments of (Tamar Myers’s) Magadalena Yoder’s slutty sister’s “inverted” bosom are supposed to be Yorkies, though Miss Chablis would never recognize them, unless she felt like giving them a (as they say in the South) “come to Jesus” dressing down and straightening them up. She could do it, too! I love imagining that, and her turning them into tiny quadrupedal Southern Gentlemen, with bow ties. If you want to be whacked with sheer ADORABILITY, do an image search on “Pets in bow ties”…Or “formal wear”…”Santa suits…” Part of me doesn’t approve of festooning pets (or anybody) with unnecessary accoutrements, but they’re just so darn irresistibly CUUUUUUUUUTE!!!
Barbara says
Wow! What a great list. Thanks so much for creating it. I only knew about half of these people. I’m the raffle chairperson for our sheltie rescue picnic and I make up baskets with cozy dog books, mugs, tea, etc. You’ve given me new resources to search out so thanks!
Do you know of any fiction sheltie books other than Gay, A Shetland Sheepdog?
Thanks, Barbara
Kay says
A series about West Highland White Terriers would really please me and Cully.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Kay,
The only West Highland White Terrier I can think of is Ballou – in the mystery series by Nora Charles (aka Noreen Wald) which features Kate Kennedy, a senior citizen sleuth in Florida…
(Don’t be put-off by the cover of the first mystery book in the series… the author (or publisher/editor) didn’t know the difference between a Jack Russell Terrier and a West Highland White Terrier. They corrected their mistake in later books, which incidentally are some of the cutest covers out there!)
Renee T. says
Danna,
We’ve had Westies for 25 years so I was happy to see Ballou as the main character in the Kate Kennedy Senior Sleuth Mysteries. I can’t wait to read them! Thanks so much for the post.
Do you know of any cozies with a Toy Poodle as the main character?
Danna - cozy mystery list says
I’m sorry, Renee T, I can’t think of any Cozy Mystery series which feature Toy Poodles. Hopefully someone else knows of one…
Karen says
laurien berenson has standard poodles in her melanie travis series she is a school teacher single mom and with her aunt peg they show dogs and solve mysteries
Greenway says
Charlie Harris and Diesel (Miranda James’s Cat in the Stacks mysteries) rent to Stewart and his energetic toy poodle… I forgot his name, and Stewart’s surname. Senior moments can be permanent. Diesel must sometimes exercise his authoriTAY when the poodle and Ramses-kitten get too out of line.
MJB says
Sorry I can’t help you with Stewart’s surname, but his dog is named Dante.
Veronica Dougherty says
V.M.Burns writes a series with at least one toy poodle
Charlotte says
Ellen O’Connell has just published Rottweiler Rescue, which I enjoyed enormously, and is working on her second Rottie mystery.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thanks, Charlotte, for telling us about Ellen O’Connell!
Christine says
Does anyone know the names of a couple of mysteries, set in NY in 40s or 50s, written at least 30-35 years ago (the books were used when I bought them in early 80s). Main characters were Jack, Susan and their dog named Tripod. Have exhausted all regular avenues of online searching.Thanks.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Christine, I happen to know this one!
The author you are looking for is Michael McDowell. He wrote three Jack and Susan novels:
Jack and Susan in 1953 (1985)
Jack and Susan in 1913 (1986)
Jack and Susan in 1933 (1985)
He also is the screenwriter of Beetlejuice, which incidentally is one terrific movie!
Christine says
Danna – that’s it!! I had searched Amazon to no avail- probably didn’t enter search terms in the best manner. Thanks so much – they were great stories and Tripod is the best. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Beetlejuice – I’ll check it out. Thanks again.
Christine
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Christine, Beetlejuice isn’t for everybody… It’s pretty quirky, to say the least. Very Tim Burton-esque!
Marion Moore Hill says
I’ll immodestly mention my Scrappy Librarian Mysteries, in which the librarian protagonist has a collie mongrel called Rip (an ironic reference to Jack the Ripper, since Rip was abused in the past and consequently is timid around most people). Thanks for compiling this list–I now have some new authors to look for!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thank you, Marion, for telling us about your Cozy Mystery series. We are always looking for new Cozies!
Kath Russell says
My mystery, A POINTED DEATH, features sidekick dog Skootch, a rescue from the San Francisco pound. I don’t tend to think of my mystery as a cozy because it is set in the biotech industry, and it is just too much of a hybrid, but many blog reviewers see it as a cozy. Since I love cozies, who am I to object?
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thank you, Kath, for telling us about your new mystery series. I’m sorry, but I don’t know what a “hybrid” mystery is…
Sean says
Love a mystery with a canine in it and I would have never even thought to write a blog on it. My current novel, The Trust, features a canine, a rescue. As I was writing it I was wishing for some other books to read to get a feel for how they handled and wove the canine into the story. Look forward to exploring some of the books on the blog.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Sean, I see (from your site: Sean Keefer – The Trust) that you and your wife have two Australian Shepherds. I have always loved that breed… but know that they are a handful. (I even loved Australian Shepherds before the movie: Babe!)
Pegg says
Thanks for your list. Rita Mae Brown, Lee Charles Kelly, Virginia Lanier and Shirley Rousseau Murphy (who wasn’t on your list) are my absolute favorites. Am now reading my first Spenser Quinn book.
Pegg says
My apologies, in my excitement of this list I forgot this was for “dog” cozies. Ms Murphy is on the cat list.
Andie says
Today I read a debut mystery by Carol Ann Newsome.
A Shot in the Bark (A Dog Park Mystery) available on Kindle, is an extremely well written mystery about a serial killer who is methodical and manipulative.
It was recommended by another member of my book club.
Lia Anderson is the main character who has to deal with the aftermath of one murder followed by more complications and revelations of secrets of others in the dog park group.
Unlike so many mysteries, the protagonist does not do any sleuthing on her own, the investigation is led by a very believable detective who acts the way one would expect in a dedicated law officer.
While there are some brief, fairly tasteful, mentions of sex, they are integral to the story and not just thrown in for effect.
I have always been an inveterate dog lover and the dogs in this story are well rounded characters in their own right.
It is surprising that this is a first novel because the author writes with authority that is often missing in stories by established authors and I finished the book wishing it would go on.
I look forward to another mystery featuring the Mt. Airy Dog Park characters.
Rita says
Witness Unleashed by Louie Flann is a mystery based on the what-ifs that arose during the OJ Simpson trial. It features an animal behaviorist who trains a German Shepherd to communicate sufficiently well to testify at a trial. For everyone who was fascinated by the “trial of the century” this will be a thought provoking read.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Rita, thanks for telling us about Louie Flann’s Witness Unleashed.
sherry says
Love the list. Anything for horses?
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Hi Sherry,
Here is the list of the Horse Theme Mysteries. I have a whole page filled with different themes in mystery books. The list is on the Cozy Mystery site’s Theme page.
linda c says
What is it about horses? I love seeing horses out in the fields whenever I go from here to there. These are beautiful creatures. Seeing one or two running or galloping is an extra added awesome sight.
Waverly Fitzgerald says
Thanks for this amazing list.
My colleague, Curt Colbert and I, are writing a series of humorous mysteries using the pen name of Waverly Curtis. They are cozies featuring a talking Chihuahua named Pepe. The first one is called Dial C for Chihuahua and is available for pre-order now–official publication date October 1, 2012.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Waverly, Pepe and his Barking Detective Mystery Series has put you and your colleague, Curt, on my “Authors to Post” list. Thanks for stopping by!
Greenway says
Read more than one by now. Chihuahuas USED to be close to the bottom of my dog-breeds list, but ‘Waverly Curtis’ …And Esri Albritten have changed that. Pepe is almost as dashing as Puss in Boots (yea, even the Antonio Banderas, best animated film EVER version). Pepe, Cid Campeador! Pepe is a hero!
Jean says
How about David Rosenfelt, and his wonderful series with lawyer Andy Carpenter and Tara, his golden retriever? Most of the mysteries include other dogs as well. The first one is Open and Shut, and there are ten books in the series.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thanks to you, Jean, David Rosenfelt is on the Dog Theme Mystery page.
linda c says
Danna, Among the things that I have picked up on while reading so many cozy mysteries is the people who drink a lot of tea have some sort of pet, mostly dogs.
Don’t forget Sue Henry and Maxie and Stretch.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Linda C, I have recently switched from my morning coffee to morning tea. I guess that means a new pet is in my destiny…
linda c says
Not only do most Cozy sleuths drink lots of tea, have some kind of animal pet, it seems like a lot of these people drink a lot of wine., and it seems a lot of these characters are always cooking something that is so described that I swear I can smell whatever is cooking. I love the pets, haven’t started drinking wine or tea yet, coffee laced with a good coffee creamer is my drink of choice.
Whenever some character is cooking something I start to think that I should get up and cook something myself. But then I realize that in order to do that I have to put my book down!!
Whenever I am into a really good book, I used to have darling hubby cook something up. But now that he is reading quite a bit, he doesn’t want to put his book down either. Oh well. Throw something into the oven, whip up a salad, throw a loaf of bread and some margarine on the table, dish up some ice cream or open a can of peaches. There, supper is ready! Eat, take the dogs out, clean up the kitchen, get back to reading! I am retired!!!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Well, Linda, I’m still drinking my tea, but no pet!
Betts says
Can anyone remember or identify an author who wrote a mystery in, I think, late 1980s or 1990s about a woman who ran a tai chi or meditation studio and had a beautiful Akita? Would appreciate…loved the book
Melanie says
Was it Carol Lea Benjamin The Dog Who Knew Too Much?
D. R. Martin says
I just wanted to put in a word for my canine cozy, “The Karma of King Harald.” It’s the first adventure of Andy Skyberg and his big, amiable mutt, King Harald. Harald is a rescue dog who looks like he’s part Chesapeake and part moose. He suddenly develops a nose for crime in the small town of New Bergen, and Andy reluctantly has to channel his inner sleuth. The book is published under my pen name, Richard Audry.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thank you, D. R. Martin, for telling us about your canine Cozy Mystery – The Karma of King Harald.
Joyce says
Just found your blog list of dog theme mysteries. It was like finding a diamond in the rough. Can’t wait to check out these authors’ books and hopefully find some real gems to add to my Kindle. Will certainly be checking back.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Welcome to the Cozy Mystery site, Joyce. I hope you’re able to find a lot of authors you enjoy reading.
joan j. says
I lived with dogs my entire 78 years except from 1962-1977. Candy our last dog was 3 when adopted in 2001 and I had to put her down 12/5/2012. I have read mysteries since I discovered Nancy Drew in the 4th grade. How about the Embroidery Mysteries? I just finished #6 a few hours ago. Marcy has store in Oregon and Angus an Irish Wolfhound who is a fixture in the store daily. I just found your Cozy mystery site today. Though many of the authors I have read. thank you
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Welcome to the Cozy Mystery site, Joan J., and thank you for the Amanda Lee reminder. I’ll go add her Cozy Mysteries to the dog theme mysteries list.
(I’m sorry about Candy. I know how difficult it is when we lose a beloved pet and part of the family.)
Jerry says
For the hunting dog lovers out there, we have a new mystery novel just published on Amazon Kindle entitled “The Deadly Dog Show“. There’s murder and miscellaneous other crimes occurring at California dog shows. It’s going to take a dog named Juliet and a doggone good private detective or two to solve this one.
joan j. says
How did I forget Laura Childs tea shop mysteries when I posted in August? Thea Browning has a tea shop in Charleston, SC and has also a dog named Earl Gray. If I remember correctly he is large. I have read all of them about 10. The latest is Sweet tea revenge which I read in April. She also has two other series, a scrapbooking one in New Orleans and others about a food place if I remember.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Joan J.- I just added Laura Childs, Thea Browning, and Earl Gray to the list. Thanks!
Carol says
I love this site!! Thank-you!!

Welcome to the Cozy Mystery site, Carol! I’m glad you are joining us.

Does anyone know of any cozy mysteries that have shih tzus in them.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Shelby, I hope someone can come up with a Cozy Mystery series that features Shih Tzus. I can’t think of any.
shelby says
Sigh…
joan j. says
to Shelby. try Barbara Allan’s trash & treasure mysteries. brandy Borne has a Shih Tzus. she is listed under the A authors. I admit I quit reading her as the whole family is dysfunctional in my opinion. These are in the humorous category.
Micheline says
TRULY ENJOYED READING THIS.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Micheline, I think pets in mystery series add a certain personal touch to the books. I’m glad you enjoyed the Dog theme in mysteries.

yayy! being a dog-lover/owner myself I look for dogs on the covers (cats as well) and I’m so pleased to see this list – some I’ve read and a whole lot I haven’t yet!! Now I need to find a way to save this list to my phone so when I’m at the library I have it at hand 🙂
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Diane, I hope you’re able to find lots and lots of Canine Cozies you enjoy reading!
joan j says
Duffy Brown with her consignment shop mysteries. How I could forget BW, Bruce Willis is her constant companion. Demise in Denim is #4 in series which I just got today and started reading. I don’t remember what breed he is. However, the cover shows a border collie. This is terrible I remember all the characters from previous books BUT not BW’s family tree.LOL.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Joan J, I think the Bruce Willis you’re talking about is a mutt. (I’ll go add him to the list of Dog Theme Cozies.)
Amy says
I am desperately seeking a series of kids mystery books featuring dogs. I can barely recall the following tidbits: main character was a young male dog and had a “girlfriend” named Delilah. In one of the books (2nd, 3rd?) she has amnsesia or something and calls him Johnny and thinks he is going off to war. The series is somewhat satirical, it’s funny, and there is a common reference across books to “HE who Shall Remain Nameless”. Can you help??Thanks!!
Azarius says
I am looking for the same book for my library, if you find it, would you mind sharing the title,.?
Azarius says
I searched for a whole month, thanks to you for reminding me of the name I was finally able to track it down; the books title is Howie Monroe and the Doghouse of Doom (Tales From the House of Bunnicula) By James Howe,.
Tiffani says
Shelley Freydonts ‘Celebration Bay’ Cozy Series main character Liv Montgomery has a Westie dog that accompanies her a lot. As well as Peg Cochrans Gourmet De-Lite Mystery Series main character…also a Westie. Can you tell I have a Westie? 😉
wldmstnglvr says
Hoping you all can help!
In the not too distant past (within the past year I believe) I read a cozy that featured a woman photographer, her Australian Shepherd, her boyfriend and his Labrador. They both did obedience and agility, including cat agility with her cat. The story also was about illegal exotic bird smuggling.
Can anyone help with title and/or author????? I cannot believe I cannot remember and I want more.
wldmstnglvr says
Responding to my own comment- but I found it! Please add Sheila Webster Boneham to your list. Her books are Drop Dead on Recall, The Money Bird, Catwalk and Shepherd’s Crook.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thanks for telling us about Sheila Webster Boneham‘s Animals in Focus Mystery Series.
Bordercollies says
A British cozy TV show, ‘Rosemary & Thyme,’ has an episode in which a black Lab has a star role. It’s ‘A Simple Plot,’ which originally aired 26 September 2003. It is now available on Youtube. It’s Series 1, Episode 5.

ROSEMARY AND THYME: Coziest TV mystery series ever. May it revive just as good as before!

Very happy to have stumbled upon this site today. I love books which feature dogs and I was hoping some-one maybe able to identify this book, for a query posted on a different forum that I too would like to read.
The heroine is a dog trainer. She has 3 dogs. She is asked to go on an undercover mission with some kind of government agent. I remember them escaping on a boat and I think the mission was on an island. She took one of the dogs with her, I think it was because “what kind of government operation would have a dog on a boat?”. I know that the bad guy comes after them at the end, after you think everything is going to be cleared up by other government types. And I do believe that the bad guy kills two of her dogs, which really upset me at the time. I think one of the dogs was named Sweet Pea.
There is a part at the end where she is calling her dog (Wiley???) to jump onto the boat. But she is using a hand signal to tell him to stay. So he is going back and forth, kind of dancing around. And then the guys who work for the bad guy are even telling him to “jump”.
Thanks for your help.

Knightshift, welcome to the site!
I’m not completely certain, but the book you are thinking of might be Deadly Tides by Susan Holmes. I haven’t read it personally, but the Amazon description for the first book does match what you are saying to an extent – she is a kennel owner who trains dogs, and one of her three dogs is named Sweet Pea. (Though if two of her dogs are killed, might not qualify as Cozy for me! As you say, that is pretty upsetting for a Cozy!) The part that doesn’t completely fit is that the description doesn’t really indicate any government agents are involved.
If anyone else has any idea what series Knightshift is looking for, please be sure to leave a comment!
knightshift says
Thanks Danna, Deadly Tides was the book I suggested too and unfortunately not the one.
Anyway, I now have loads of books I want to read with a dog theme, and my plenty of cozy mystery books for my mother-in-law.
Thank you again, and great site.
Susan says
Knightshift and Danna, thank you for thinking of my book Deadly Ties. I promise no dogs are killed in that book, or in the next (Dangerous Deeds, due out this year if all goes well). And as Sweet Pea in the story was inspired by my own spaniel, I predict she’ll go on to be the longest living dog in mystery fiction!
~Susan
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Susan Holmes, thank you so much for clarifying this! I didn’t think you would have that in your books. I’m glad to see Sweet Pea is going to be “the longest living dog in mystery fiction!”
knightshift says
Thanks Susan (I bought your book today on Amazon).
And thanks again Danna for your help.

Knightshift, no problem >>> though I wish we had been able to find the specific series you were looking for! At least it sounds like you’ve been able to pick out some other good Cozies instead.
Kim says
I am trying to find a cozy series that features a female main character and her black Lab, Captain. The woman’s father supposedly died in a shipwreck, but years later she learned he survived and had another family. She finds her half-brother and brings him to work in one of the restaurants she owns. Also, she belongs to a book club that the town’s police chief is also a member of.
Can anyone help me?
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Kim, I’m afraid I’m not familiar with the series that you are describing – hopefully someone else can make a suggestion?
Janice says
I believe the series you’re looking for is the Ellery Adams Books by the Bay mysteries. The dog in that series is a standard poodle but everything else matches up with your description.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Janice, thank you so much for letting Kim know. It’s great how Cozy readers are willing (and able!) to help each other. Thanks, again!

I read a beginning sample of a book and do not know the title or author, I was hoping someone would help me locate and read the entire thing! beginning synopsis: A female character just got home, upon checking her messages-or her secretary had messages – I recall a work situation – a husband of a dog show competitor called to say his wife had passed away, would she go and get the woman’s dogs to find homes for them. He had put them in the garage in crates. I believe they were welsh corgis, she went to get the dogs and all the files, fed them and took them to go to a vet for boarding the next day. thanks all I read – would love to find the book and finish the story – Thanks, (I love your site, it gives me more books to look forward to reading)
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Kathy, unfortunately I don’t recognize the title. Maybe someone else could help you out?
Jane says
I’m trying to think of a cozy mystery I read a little while ago – It had a woman who owned a dog she took everywhere, and I think she worked with animals. The story itself involved her current boyfriend’s ex-wife being a suspect in a murder case and the main character had to solve it or something? I just can’t think what the name of the series was!
Jane says
I also think maybe she was lawyer?
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Jane, hmm, I’m not really sure on this one. Maybe someone else reading the comments will have an answer for you.

You might want to check out the Foxglove Corners series by Dorothy Bodoin. The main character has a collie, and all the stories feature dogs of one kind or another. There are currently 21 books in the series. I’m on number 7 and plan on reading them all. They don’t have the best cover art, but trust me, she is a good writer!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Javagirl, thanks for the suggestion! I’ll be sure to take a look and might add her in a bit.
javagirl7 says
I forgot to mention, her mysteries have no profanity or sexual situations in them.
David says
I’d like to recommend the “Howl” Series ( Howl in the Night…etc.) by J K Brandon, The stories are told from the POV of “Taser”, a rescue Black Lab who, together, with his lazy housemate Lab, “Meatloaf”, live with their person, Robert. They solve mysteries together with a varied group of neighborhood dogs. But it’s often hard to get the humans to understand what’s ‘right under their noses’. Fun reads in what is, so far, a ten book series
Danna - cozy mystery list says
David, for some reason, Amazon seems to think this series is an informational series on dog breeds, but that’s clearly wrong. I’ll take a look at the series and consider adding it to the list!
Marguerite says
How about Jenn McKinlay’s Library Lovers Mystery, with Lindsay and her dog heathcliff, or Nancy Coco’s Candy coated mysteries, Alilie McMurphy and her dog Mal, or Natural Remedies Mystery by Chrystle Fiedler with Willow McQuade and her dog Zeke.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Marguerite, thanks for the additions! I’ve put them on the list.
Jerry says
Not exactly cozy (some violence) but the mystery series has no profanity or sexual situations in the books, and three of the novels feature a dog as a main character.
“The Deadly Dog Show”; “Hunter Down”; and “Abra Cadaver” by Jerold Last from Amazon Kindle. Last is an owner-breeder (German shorthaired pointers) so knows his dogs. Available as E-books or in paperback versions.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Jerry, thanks for the suggestion! I’ll have to check it out some time.
Kat P. says
You should check out the series by Dorothy Bodoin. It starts with Darkness at Foxglove Corners.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Kat, I’ll have to look into that one some time!

I’m looking for a cozy mystery series about a Golden retriever female dog trainer and kennel owner In New York. She lives on a compound with her family. She travels to dog shows around the country. Her whole family is involved with the dogs. Great series and I’m hoping a new book has been written, if I could just remember the author’s name. Love this blog. Thanks so much for all the new ideas for books.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Neater, I don’t think I can help you with that one – but hopefully someone else on the site can! I’ve posted your question as part of a reader’s question post at the front of the blog.

Thanks so much for mentioning Bruce Willis from my Consignment Shop Mysteries. Love that pup! A rescue that Reagan found hiding under her porch and they saved each other. Thanks for the support. Hugs.

Duffy, you’re welcome, and thanks for writing Cozies!

Loved this list and truly love a cozy mystery. Does anyone know of mysteries with an Old English Sheepdog. Looking for a cozy mystery book for a friend to send as a Christmas gift. Thanks
All Things Collie says
If you are going to write a list of cozy series books, about mysteries and dogs, you have to include Dorothy Bodoin and her Foxglove Corners series. I love these books, the people, and of course the collies. Definitely worth checking out.

What a great list! If you’re updating, I’d recommend the Little Dog Diner series by Emmie Lyn. Pip, a Jack Russel Terrier is adorable!
Cindy says
This belongs in the category with Virginia Lanier. The Ryder Creed series by Alex Kava. Veteran who trains service dogs, search and rescue dogs.
Amanda says
I recommend the Jaz and Luffy Cozy Mystery series by Max Parrott. It’s got a young sleuth similar to Nancy Drew who experiences visions, and her partner is a golden retriever named Luffy, who is just plain adorable!!
FlatRapidsPixie says
Have you tried the Corgi Case Files series by Jeffery M. Poole? Not sire if they are on Amazon (I’m a kobo girl, lol) but well worth looking up. Sherlock and Watson are two rescued corgis who solve crimes in the Pacific Northwest – with a very little bit of help from their owner. The series starts (I think) with “The Case of the One-eyed Tiger)
Barbara Y says
They are on Amazon – I have read every one he has written on my Kindle. After I read the first one, I soon owned the rest of the series. They even go to England in Book 14. Perfect

Sorry for responding to an older thread, but There is a new series called the Cascade Canine Club, and I just read the first book “The Rottweiler Howls at Midnight” by Rachelle Orcelletto. Super interesting characters, and the mysteries take place at a dog training club, which is a really cool world to get a look into! Would definitely recommend for a list of dog-centric cozies!

Hi Danna! Always enjoy your updates in my email…they make me run right over and see what’s new! There’s a cozy dog-themed mystery series I found earlier this year that’s been really fun. They are The Cozy Corgi Mysteries by Mildred Abbott. I listen to audiobooks while I knit or crochet for charity and these had my needles and hooks going! Winifred and her corgi, Watson move home to Colorado for a new start and the mysteries ensue! Audible says there are 31 books in the series and I’m up to #10 next. Amazon calls it a culinary cozy mystery.
