Mystery Book with a Cousin, Coffee House, and Traps…

April 17, 2011

Here is another question about the identity of an author. This letter is from Paula:

“I bought a book in a Maine Mystery Bookstore by a local author-don’t remember name-storyline, woman had a coffee house which burnt down and she opens one in a old train station where her cousin tries to murder her….

… her friend (maybe a realtor) finds an old building near an old train station (which may be a stop again on the train schedule) that can be converted and her cousin (?) sets mysterious traps which cause accidents-maybe trying to murder her so he can have the building. Along those lines.

Does it sound familiar at all? I think the author was a local.”

If any of you have an idea of the author of this book, which might be set in Maine, please post a comment.

Thank you – in advance!

Mystery Book with a Lady in a Mini…

April 16, 2011

Earlier this month I received the following letter from Ian:

“Help! Maybe you can help me, I am trying to remember the character of books I read when I was young. It was a British female sleuth, she was a Lady or daughter of one, her sidekick/best friend was an American guy who was also stinking rich and I think he had a name which ended with a number. If I remember correctly she drove a mini and there was another rich guy maybe called Sandro (Italian). Sorry to so vague but I bought some Modesty Blaize the other day and I was reminded of these books and I can’t remember the author or anything, it is driving me crazy.”

Usually you all are able to come up with the mystery book mystery authors who others are seeking. If any of you have any ideas as to whom this author could be, please post a comment.

Thank you!

Mystery Book with Jane, Tea Scones, and Madeleine's Truffles…

January 22, 2011

The site received a comment a few days ago from Patricia who would like help identifying an author:

“I have just found your site and am absolutely thrilled to find your wonderful lists, especially  those of the culinary cozies.

It may not be appropriate to ask for help here, but I just have to try! I’m desperately seeking the name of what I believe would be classified as a cozy, but I don’t know the name or the author. I found a couple of recipes I copied from the book, and all the information I know for certain comes from these two xeroxed pages: the protagonist is named Jane and the two recipes (tea scones and Madeleine’s truffles) were supposedly Jane’s mother’s. As I recall, Jane was not engaged in any sort of culinary related profession before finding these recipes. Jane went to visit a relative (I think) at a time of marital strife and found or was given her mother’s “recipe book.” Has anyone ever heard of this book? I’m guessing this book is one of a series, and I’d look to get reacquainted with this unknown author.”

If you think you might be able to help Patricia identify the author, please post a comment. Thank you!

Eating Watermelon Cookies in Winter Snow-Ins, but Not at Rainbow's End…

December 30, 2010

I have three more questions from Cozy Mystery readers, and I would love to get them answered before the year is over!

Gayle would like to find this book:

“a mystery that was not Rainbow’s End by Martha Grimes, but another one written in the 1990s that also mentions Exeter Cathedral and the Rondels – in the one I’m looking for, one of the embroiderers is killed at the beginning of the book.

I remember it is a police procedural and it opens  (or very near the beginning) with one of the embroiderers being killed in the Cathedral precincts.  It would be wonderful if someone recognizes the book.”

Brenda asks:

“I was just wondering if you knew of any winter/snowed in cozy mystery books.”

Annette would like the following recipe:

“I just read one of the Joanne Fluke’s books, Apple Turnover Murder, there was a recipe in there for “watermelon cookies”, I gave the book back to the library before I copied the recipe was wondering if anyone has the recipe.”

I’m going to begin by mentioning Cyril Hare’s An English Murder. The mystery (which is really well-written!) takes place in a mansion during snow-in conditions.

Also, Brenda, you might want to take a look at this entry (from 2009) about cold, howling wind, and snow.

OK, Cozy Mystery readers, you know the drill! Please post your responses so we can help our fellow Cozy Mystery readers.
