British Television Mystery Series: Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators

There are certain television series that attract me – and this is one of them. My husband and I for a long time were just Acorn members so I was quite disappointed to find out that the ads for the Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators British Cozy Mystery shows belonged to BritBox. This is the show that “made us” join BritBox — and I’m glad we did!

Shakespeare & Hathaway stars two main private detectives: Frank Hathaway and Luella Shakespeare. Frank (played extremely well by Mark Benton) is an ex-Detective Inspector who owns the business. He reluctantly allows Lu (beautifully played by Jo Joyner), a hairdresser, to buy into his business. The real treat is their assistant Sebastian – bravo Patrick Walshe McBride! Frank & Lu do the leg work associated with being private detectives and Sebastian does the undercover work. Sebastian is a total hoot >>> a joy to watch as he dons costumes while pretending to be different professions. Good thing he’s friends with a costume maker and that he aspires to being in the Royal Shakespeare Company!

The chemistry between the three regulars is terrific. Frank is sort of a grump, Lu is a ray of sunshine, and Sebastian is simply adorable. This is an upbeat show – as upbeat as a show can be that deals with death, betrayals, liars, cheats, and – well, you know, very bad people.

The show takes place in Stratford-upon-Avon -> and it is so beautiful that I find myself wondering why my neighborhood can’t have beautiful parks, historic buildings, flowers blooming, etc. The scenery is absolutely beautiful. And the actual detectives’ office is very realistic – exactly what you would expect — given that the main private detective doesn’t put much thought to the importance of order (vs. clutter)!

This series is truly a Cozy Mystery series – a lot of the things they investigate aren’t murders. You never see a mangled body – there are no morgue visits. This is a BBC production which started in 2018. As of 2022, they are in their fourth season. Each 45 minute episode is a self-contained mystery – which I much prefer over long-running mystery shows.

I totally recommend Shakespeare & Hathaway to everyone who wants to enjoy a truly Cozy Mystery show. Unfortunately it is only available on BritBox – however if you look at their lineup of shows – you’ll see that they offer a lot of Cozy Mystery shows.

Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel Cozy Mystery Movies – June 2022

I don’t think I have mentioned that I have YouTubeTV as my cable network. It was the cheapest cable possibility that met all of my “necessities” other than one thing: YouTubeTV didn’t offer the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel. So, I was unable to watch a lot of the Cozy Mystery movies Hallmark M & M airs. I was really happy when YouTubeTV finally started carrying the network. 

There was one particular Hallmark mystery series I wanted to watch: the Morning Show Mysteries. Unfortunately Hallmark has only shown this series one time since I have had access to their channel – so I have only been able to watch the three movies that were shown. So, you can imagine how happy I am to find out that on Saturday, June 18, the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel will be airing more of the Morning Show Mysteries movies. I’ve already set up my machine to download the movies and am hoping that the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel will start airing more of the Morning Show Mysteries movies. Also, I am really hoping that they will be making more movies in this very Cozy Mystery movie series.

British Television Mystery Series: McDonald & Dodds

First, let me start off by saying I love this ITV British television crime series. McDonald & Dodds takes place in Bath, a beautiful English city which is about 100 miles from London.

Detective Chief Inspector McDonald (Tala Gouveia) is transferred from London to Bath – where she is ready to take on the world. She wants to move up the police ladder. Unfortunately for her, she is forced to partner with Detective Sergeant Dodds (Jason Watkins). The Chief Superintendent (James Murray) wants to force Dodds to retire since Dodds still works in a very deliberate and outdated mode. Dodds doesn’t use a computer for research since he much prefers going to the library to gather his facts. He also is a paper and pen note taker, etc. All of this irritates McDonald – but the Chief Superintendent is so determined to put an end to Dodds’ career that he refuses to let McDonald off the “make-him-retire” hook. Needless to say, Dodds is quite quirky…

McDonald is quite different than Dodds. She’s a very modern detective and is quite good at heading her small group of investigators. She is very ambitious and expects a lot from her officers.

All of the actors do great jobs portraying their unique characters. The writing is smart, the plots are interesting, and the setting is absolutely beautiful. I very much recommend McDonald & Dodd. It is currently aired on BritBox.

Spoiler alert: The show doesn’t force the two main characters to remain locked into their quirky vs. exasperated personalities. The two main characters actually evolve.

Upcoming Mysteries on Turner Classic Movies for June 2022

For those of you who grew up reading the Nancy Drew mystery books, there’s good news for you this month! On Monday, June 27 the Turner Classic Movies channel will be showing all four of the Nancy Drew mystery movies that star Bonita Granville. I have seen them all a couple of times but I still plan on watching all four of them again. I think they have the same feeling/spirit as the books. Bonita Granville IS Nancy Drew!

Also, as much as I love Raymond Burr’s Perry Mason – there is another actor who was cast as Perry several times. This month, there are three Perry Mason movies that star Warren William as Perry. I really like Warren William but let’s face it, Raymond Burr IS Perry! William puts quite a different spin on Perry… (All three movies will be shown on Saturday mornings — the 11th, 18th, and 25th.)
