Upcoming Mysteries on Turner Classic Movies for August 2023

July 19, 2023

Unfortunately, Eddie Muller’s Noir Alley isn’t running during August, but I understand he will be back at the channel in September. I always enjoy (and watch!) the movies he presents, and especially like the intros and outros he presents with each of the (noir) mystery movies.

I know I have mentioned (more than several times!) how much I enjoy watching Halloween-type movies during October. Well, for those of you who enjoy those types of movies, TCM will be showing a whole bunch of Vincent Price movies on Wednesday, August 23. I’m going to set up my DVR and save a lot of his movies for October. I’ve seen most of them already, but … can’t wait to watch them again!

Also, those of you who enjoy the Bob Hope/Bing Crosby/Dorothy Lamour “road trip” movies, the Turner Classic Movies channel will be showing five of them on Thursday, August 17. I don’t know how many of those movies there are, but I know some people really enjoy them… (They are not mysteries.)

Queens of Mystery (2019 Acorn TV Series)

July 7, 2023

Queens of Mystery Series 1 Queens of Mystery is an Acorn Original comedy mystery series from Britain that I think will please a lot of cozy mystery lovers – it certainly seems to have been made with the intention of giving off that “Cozy” vibe!

Matilda Stone (played by Olivia Vinall in Season 1, Florence Hall in Season 2) is a newly promoted Detective Sergeant, who has just been posted to her hometown of Wildemarsh, England, where she quickly reunites with her three quirky aunts – all three of them mystery authors! Cat (played by Julie Graham) is a former rocker now writing mystery graphic novels, Beth (played by Sarah Woodward) is the most motherly, a conventional mystery writer, and Jane (Siobhan Redmond), a bookstore owner and author of a sci-fi mystery series.

The first season of Queens of Mystery is a six episode run, broken up into three two-part episodes, each more centered around one of the aunt’s personal endeavors – the first two centered around Beth’s potential earning of a prestigious mystery award, the second set around Cat’s former rock career, and the third around a play based on one of Jane’s works. These selections of episodes allow each of the aunts to play a more important part on the episodes “featuring” them, and each in turn lets the show bring in a larger-than-life cast of eccentric authors, rockers, and actors who can then serve as both murder victims and suspects. Each episode is about 45 minutes, so each two-parter combined runs to about 1 hour 30 minutes.

In keeping with the more light-hearted tone, it’s worth noting that the cinematography of Queens of Mystery is far more colorful than most other mystery shows out there. It might just be that I’ve been watching too many dour, gritty police procedurals lately, but I really appreciated the bright, saturated colors of Wildemarsh and in the costumes of the cast.

Woven throughout are little tidbits of a bigger mystery (arc) centered around Matilda, whose mother disappeared when she was a small child. However, this was unfortunately my and my husband’s and my least favorite part of the show – it didn’t really go very far, and only served to break up the flow of the specific episodes. We also weren’t as fond of the presented romantic interest, handsome but boring coroner, Dr. Daniel Lynch – the actor playing him seems perfectly competent, but there just isn’t much meat for the role beyond Matilda occasionally making puppy-dog-eyes at him. Inspector Thorne (played by Martin Trenaman), Matilda’s grumpy boss who is always telling her to keep her aunts out of police business is particularly funny when he has his imaginary asides that contrast sharply with his rather gruff exterior.

Overall, I would call Queens of Mystery perhaps the “Coziest” mystery television series I’ve seen in a while, and despite the small issues I mentioned above, I’d still strongly recommend it to anyone who loves Cozies! In addition to the first series aired in 2019 that I have discussed above, there is a second 6 episode run from 2021 also available, and at least at the moment, both are streaming on Acorn.

Upcoming Mysteries on Turner Classic Movies for July 2023

June 25, 2023

The Turner Classic Movies channel will be showing a few movies during July that are based on mystery authors from yester-year. There will be two S. S. Van Dine movies: The Kennel Murder Case with one of my favorite actors (William Powell) will be shown on Saturday, July 8 and The Casino Murder Case on Saturday, July 1. I’ve seen both of them several times, and will probably “tape” them on my YouTube TV device so that I can watch them again!

Also, if you’re a fan of Alfred Hitchcock’s mystery movies, there will be four of them during July: Dial M for Murder (Sunday, July 16), The Girl Was Young (Tuesday, July 18), I Confess (Tuesday, July 25), and Foreign Correspondent (Saturday, July 2).

Barbara Stanwyck (probably my all-time favorite Golden Age of Hollywood actress (except for Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, and a few others!) will be featured in four mystery movies this month on the Turner Classic Movies channel: Jeopardy (Tuesday, July 11), The Mad Miss Manton and Lady of Burlesque (Tuesday, July 18), and the must-see Double Indemnity (Saturday, July 29).

And, since Eddie Muller’s Noir Alley is back, be sure to catch the noir movies he picks to show on Saturdays at midnight and then later on Sunday mornings. I enjoy his intros and outros so much that sometimes I fast-forward through the movies to see his outros and then go back and watch the movies… sort of like when the suspense in a book is so intense that I can’t wait to the end of the book and find myself peeking at the last two chapters before going back to my place in the book.

P.S. I’m a little worried about what the future will hold for the Turner Classic Movies channel. The UK version of the channel is being shut down. The current news reports about TCM look a little bleak… Hopefully Warner is able to continue the channel here.

June 2023 Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel Cozy Mystery Movies

June 2, 2023

It’s been a while since I posted a blog entry about the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries channel Cozy Mystery movies, but I want to be sure you know about some PREMIERES that will be shown this month. I need to hurry up and tell you about the two new Cozy Mystery movie series (I hope!), because one of them airs tonight!

The Dancing Detective: A Deadly Tango will be shown tonight for the first time. It stars one of my favorite Hallmark actresses (Lacey Chabert) as a detective who is somehow paired with a dashing dance “star” from Great Britain. This is a movie that I have already set up on my YouTubeTV queue – can’t wait!

Here’s the information the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries website posts:

Friday – June 2, 2023

8:00 PM
The Dancing Detective: A Deadly Tango ***PREMIERE***
A no-nonsense detective must reluctantly team up with a charismatic British dance star in order to solve a murder. Stars Lacey Chabert, Will Kemp.

Constance Bailey is a no-nonsense detective who prefers to work alone. When a high-profile CEO is murdered on the eve of his company’s corporate event in Malta – a high stakes ballroom competition between senior executives – Detective Bailey is sent undercover as one of the contestants. The only problem? She can’t dance. To convincingly compete, she must team up with charismatic and free-spirited performer Sebastian Moore. But with a killer on the loose and a growing list of suspects, it’s going to take more than a little fancy footwork to solve this case. Starring Lacey Chabert and Will Kemp.

And, in case you miss it tonight, here are some more of the times The Dancing Detective: A Deadly Tango will be showing:

Friday June 2 9/8c
Sunday June 4 5/4c
Tuesday June 6 9/8c
Sunday June 11 9/8c
Wednesday June 21 7/6c

***** ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** *****
That wraps it up for this month! Please let me know if there are any more interesting Cozy Mystery movie PREMIERES coming up. I don’t watch anything “live” on TV, so I miss all of the ads about new movies/series – since I fast forward through that pesky sales information.

P.S. The above information about the movies is from the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries website.
