Murder Mystery (2019 Netflix Movie)

January 10, 2024

I just re-watched this Netflix movie, and I enjoyed it as much this time as I did a few years ago when I watched it with my husband. If you’re in the mood for a very cute comedy mystery movie, you ought to give Murder Mystery a try.

Murder Mystery is a 2019 production which stars Adam Sandler 9Nick) and Jennifer Aniston (Audrey). They’re celebrating their 15th anniversary. (Their chemistry together is terrific!) He’s a New York City officer, she’s a mystery book-reading hairdresser.

During their flight, they are invited to join Luke Evans (Charles) on a billionaire’s yacht. The yacht takes the place of an isolated mansion. Yep, you guessed it: a murder takes place. Since this yacht trip was a celebration of sorts, there is a collection of characters — some of them quite eccentric. Isolated location with eccentric characters, plus an unsigned will… and there we have the perfect beginning of a Cozy Mystery!

Lucky for all, Adam Sandler’s (Nick) character is a police officer. Unfortunately, there is a second death. This starts the investigation by Nick and Audrey. Rather than join their planned bus tour, Nick and Audrey are treated (by Charles) to first class accommodations in Monte Carlo at a private, to-notch villa. The scenery is beautiful and opulent. (So this is how the very, very, very rich live!) Apparently the movie was filmed in different absolutely beautiful Italian locations.

As I mentioned above, I really enjoyed this Cozy Mystery movie, and so did my husband. Do not read the Rotten Tomato reviews before you watch it!

Murder Mystery is, as I said, definitely a Cozy Mystery movie. the acting by all the characters is very good, the chemistry between the main stars is terrific, the scenery is gorgeous, the costume department did a great job, and the mystery was both good and included some interesting twists. I am hopeful Murder Mystery 2 is as good (this re-watch was in preparation of watching the sequel, which we haven’t gotten around to yet), and am hoping there will be even more movies in this series.

Upcoming Mysteries on Turner Classic Movies for January 2024

December 19, 2023

Wow, another New Year is almost upon us! I hope 2024 is a GREAT year for ALL of us!

Something that sort of surprised me while I was getting the Turner Classic Movies mystery movies schedule together: The year is starting (on January 1) with Godzilla movies which are then going to be followed with the Marx brother movies, not the Thin Man mystery movies. For years, William Powell and Myrna Loy have been ushering us into the New Year with their “many-martinis” mystery movies.

Perhaps the Turner Classic Movies decided it was time to let another mystery movie hero welcome us into 2024… Several of The Saint mystery movies (based on Leslie Charteris’s mystery series) will be aired on Friday, January 12. I don’t believe I have seen all of the line-up, so I’ll be DVR-ing some of them. Three actors will be portraying Simon Templar (“The Saint”) so it will be interesting to see which one is the best…

One Special Night – A Non-mystery Christmas Movie

December 4, 2023

Ok, ok, I know that I should only “talk” about mystery books and mystery movies, however, this 1999 movie is one I remember seeing years ago. (I’m not sure if it was the year it was released or not…) Unfortunately, it is only available to Prime members. For those of you who aren’t Prime members, I’m sorry…

In 1999 James Garner and Julie Andrews got together for the third time. The Turner Classic Movies channel has shown their 1964 movie The Americanization of Emily several times recently – which I DVR-ed, watched, and enjoyed (again!). The Turner Classic Movies channel has also shown their second endeavor together – the 1982 movie Victor/Victoria – which is another really good movie. The third time they worked together is in this very touching Thanksgiving/Christmas movie, One Special Night. (The action starts at Thanksgiving and goes on to Christmas.) One Special Night was a movie from a time when television channels were making movies that could be seen by everyone – quite unlike all of the movies that the different streaming channels are making now – for just their streaming customers.

One Special Night is based on Jan Hartman’s play A Winter Visitor. Obviously, it is not based on a romance between two 20 or 30 year old characters.

If you’ve seen it already, let us know what you think of One Special Night, and if you haven’t seen it, try to watch it. I love this movie, and will probably watch it again – and possibly again…

P.S. I’m not “talking” about the plot since I don’t want to give anything away…
