Upcoming Television Mystery Movies for December 2017

November 23, 2017

Since next month will be December, there will be quite a few Christmas movies, which I will be listing if they are some of my personal favorites. They’ll be marked as Christmas movies, and unless noted otherwise, are not particularly “mysterious”.

It’s also worth mentioning, though they aren’t quite mysteries, TCM will (again) be showing the Thin Man movies on New Year’s Eve.

So, let’s get started!

Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot Movies with Peter Ustinov

October 25, 2017

Move over David Suchet! Peter Ustinov also starred in a series of movies based on Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot mysteries.

This generation is familiar with David Suchet’s excellent portrayal of Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot. It doesn’t get much better than that! But if you’re in the mood to experience a different take on Poirot, be sure to check out Peter Ustinov’s portrayal.

Peter Ustinov starred in six Hercule Poirot movies:

  1. Death on the Nile (1978)
  2. Evil Under the Sun (1982)
  3. Thirteen at Dinner (1985)
  4. Dead Man’s Folly (1986)
  5. Murder in Three Acts (1986)
  6. Appointment with Death (1988)

These movies spared no expense >>> the movies were filmed in the locations in which the Agatha Christie novels were set: movie #1 – Egypt, movie #2 – Mallorca and Spain, movies #3 & 4 – England, movie #5 – Mexico, and movie #6 – Israel, Italy, and England.

Besides the wonderful actor, Peter Ustinov, these six movies featured top-notch, big name guest stars of the times: Angela Lansbury, Bette Davis, David Niven, Maggie Smith, Diana Rigg, Mia Farrow, James Mason, Roddy McDowell, Faye Dunaway, Tony Curtis, Lauren Bacall, John Gielgud, the list simply goes on and on.

The wardrobe is phenomenal. The costume department seemed to almost have themes for the different movies. The sets were realistic-looking, right down to the smallest details.

I was going to write entries about each of Peter Ustinov’s Hercule Poirot movies and started that with an entry about his portrayal of Hercule in Evil Under the Sun (“Evil Under the Sun” – Poirot Comes to Life in Peter Ustinov’s 1982 Portrayal), but instead I’ve decided to simply list the movies and tell you that they are definitely a change of pace from the David Suchet’s Hercule Poirot movies. (Oh, and you may be surprised to see David Suchet in one of them!)

Upcoming Television Mystery Movies for November 2017

October 20, 2017

I hope everyone has been enjoying the beginnings of Fall! This month there appear to be fewer mystery movies on TCM. I thought maybe it would be because they were showing lots of Christmas movies, but that’s not the case… well, there will be some Christmas movies starting, but not too many this month. I’ve marked the Christmas movies I recommend that don’t happen to be mysteries.

The big mystery marathon for this month will be a Falcon marathon on Monday, the 6th. So if you’re interested in gentleman sleuths from the 1940s, be sure to tune in!

So, let’s get started!

Sergeant Cribb (USA) (or Just “Cribb” in Great Britain) Television Mystery Series

October 11, 2017

Let me first state that if you’re looking for high-tech special effects or modern-day filming techniques, this television mystery series is not for you. However, if you’re looking for a British police procedural set in the late 1880s that features good acting, very nice Victorian sets and wardrobe, with interjections of humor, then you’ll probably enjoy Sergeant Cribb as much as my husband and I do.

Peter Lovesey wrote the Sergeant Cribb mysteries, so it is a real treat that Peter Lovesey also had his hand in the writing of the scripts for these 1979-1981 television episodes. It ensures that the shows are as close as possible to the mystery novels. Unfortunately, there are only fourteen episodes.

Sergeant Cribb (I’ll refer to the shows by the USA title rather than the British “Cribb“) was produced in the late 1970s/early 1980s, by Granada Television. The series features Alan Dobie as Cribb, with William Simons (from the Inspector Alleyn television series) as his constable. The relationship between them is phenomenal. Cribb is able to be both a friend of sorts as well as a boss to Detective Constable Thackery. A lot of their interactions are quite humorous (on the dry side).

Don’t be surprised to find some actual events interspersed throughout the shows. I especially enjoyed the inclusion of Victorian England’s Golden Jubilee celebrations. Oh, and the episode featuring Inspector Jowell’s (Cribb’s boss, played by David Waller) boy’s boarding school reunion.

Sergeant Cribb and his constable somehow solve the mysteries that others are unable to solve. Cribb, it seems, has an innate gift for the world of detection.

(PS: For those you you who are Rosemary & Thyme fans, Peter Lovesey was a “story consultant” for many of the episodes.)
