Upcoming Mysteries on Turner Classic Movies for May 2024

April 18, 2024

Oh, my! It’s already May! I’m getting this Turner Classic Mystery Movies list ready in mid April, and already we’ve had several days in the mid 80s. It’s going to be a hot summer for us down here in San Antonio!

I don’t usually do this, but I’m going to highlight three mystery movies that the Turner Classic channel will be showing during May 2024. Two of them are directed by Alfred Hitchcock, and one by Otto Preminger. Hitchcock’s are the 1940 Rebecca (based on the terrific novel by Daphne du Maurier) and the 1938 The Lady Vanishes (based on Ethel Lina White’s novel The Wheel Spins). I haven’t seen either of them in a few years, so I’m going to be sure to “tape” them this time when they are shown. Rebecca will be playing on Wednesday the 1st and The Lady Vanishes on Wednesday the 22nd. The third movie I want to highlight is the 1944 Laura, directed by Otto Preminger. It will be aired on Wednesday the 1st. I’ll be “taping” this one also since I haven’t seen it in years.

Also, I want to tell you about two Agatha Christie Miss Marple mystery movies Turner will be showing: the 1961 Murder She Said and the 1963 Murder at the Gallop. They are “very sixties movies” – don’t expect a quiet time with this Miss Marple! (They’ll be airing on Sunday, May 12.)

Three Falcon movies will be airing this month: The Falcon Takes Over, The Falcon’s Brother, and The Falcon in Danger. George Sanders started the Falcon mystery movies and then his brother (literally!) took over the role of the sleuth. The three movies will be aired on the first three Saturdays of the month.

Upcoming Mysteries on Turner Classic Movies for April 2024

March 18, 2024

Finally, it’s spring! Well, I say that for those of you who live in areas where you can actually enjoy the spring time. As I prepared the Turner Classic Movies channel’s April schedule of mystery and crime movies (in March), we have already had several days in the 80s. I’ve mentioned many times that we experience two seasons down here in San Antonio – humid and hot AND tepid and cool – yet still humid. So, we now see ourselves in the humid/hot/tropical-feeling weather. I sure do miss the four seasons!

An Inspector Calls

March 3, 2024

An Inspector Calls is a terrific 2015 mystery movie that is based on J. B. Priestley’s play, and an excellent example of a drawing room mystery. An inspector comes to the home of a very rich, “entitled” family. They are are celebrating the engagement of their daughter. The play takes place during the early twentieth century (1912).

Inspector Goole arrives at the home and proceeds to interview all of the very “entitled” members of the family and the son-in-law-to-be. A working class, beautiful woman has committed suicide, leave her detailed diary for Inspector Goole to use as a tool to uncover each of their “transactions” with the suicide victim.

I was struck by the very obvious opulence of the estate’s house vs. the depiction of the majority of the characters’ living conditions. The aristocratic characters hold the futures of the working class characters in their hands.

Inspector Goole discusses the suicide victim with each of the five party attendees. I’m not going to reveal any spoilers here, so I’m going to stop talking about the plot. However, I will tell you that the ambiance, wardrobe, acting, and plot are all terrific.

An Inspector Calls is a one and a half hour movie intended for adults. It can currently be found on BritBox. I definitely recommend it.
