Authors Similar to Carola Dunn

May 28, 2011

Diana sent me a letter asking for help finding authors similar to sleuth Daisy Dalrymple’s creator, Carola Dunn:

“I’m hoping you’ll be willing to give me a suggestion or two – I especially love …  Carola Dunn (Daisy Dalrymple).  … do you have any specific author suggestions?”

I am going to start the list off with Jacqueline Winspear (who Diana suggested in her letter) and some other authors who I think Diana might be able to substitute Carola Dunn with, now that she is all caught up with Dunn’s Daisy Dalrymple mysteries.

Authors Who Are Similar to Carola Dunn:

Susan Wittig Albert: Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter Mystery Series

Nancy Atherton: Aunt Dimity Mystery Series

M. C. Beaton (aka Marion Chesney): Hamish Mcbeth Mystery Series

Rhys Bowen: Molly Murphy Mystery Series AND Lady Georgiana Mystery Series

Emily Brightwell: Mrs. Jeffries Mystery Series

Marion Chesney (aka M. C. Beaton): Edwardian Murder Mystery Series

Jeanne M. Dams: Dorothy Martin Mystery Series

When a Cozy Mystery Isn’t What You Are Looking For…

March 31, 2011

I just heard from Alfred, a friend who I have made since I started this website. We exchange letters every so often, and I always enjoy hearing from him. Alfred has been great about sending me recommendations of new Cozy Mystery authors who he thinks really belong on the site. And, he is always right about those authors! He also gives me the heads-up on when some of the Cozy Mystery authors are publishing a new book.

Recently, Alfred started reading his current book and realized that he wasn’t in the mood to read it. With that, he started thinking about hobbies, and thought it might be interesting to find out what other hobbies you all enjoy doing when your latest Cozy Mystery just isn’t cutting it for you!

I’ll start the ball rolling by telling you that one of the things Alfred enjoys doing is Word Search Puzzles. Another thing he enjoys doing is listening to the old radio shows from the 1940s and 1950s. And, since he has subscriptions to two word search magazines and also has CDs of old radio shows, he is able to combine both of these relaxing hobbies. He also enjoys jigsaw puzzles.

(One of my brothers enjoys jigsaw puzzles and word searches, also!)

Now I’ll tell you about some of my hobbies >>> I love my Sudoku Puzzles! I have to admit that I’m not too terribly fast at them, and sometimes I have to put one down and then try coming back to it another day, but I still love them. Also, I enjoy my needlepoint, especially with those little Mill Hill glass beads… even though I am almost sure that they are the reason I have had to up my reading glasses prescription! (Anymore, I feel like Sprite is a “hobby” of mine. Carrying her from room to room, giving her all of her many pills, making sure she doesn’t take certain pills on an empty stomach, ETC!)

Do any of you have some hobbies that you wouldn’t mind telling us about?

(PS>>> Alfred, thanks for the great entry idea!)

Mom from Musical Family – Motherhood Isn’t a Breeze…

March 7, 2011

I am always hesitant about posting questions from Cozy Mystery site readers. I’ll tell you why: I’m afraid that I should definitely know the answers, as if they are right there in my brain, but I simply can’t connect with them. I take a while to think the questions through, and try to remember if I have read any mysteries that could possibly fill the bill. It isn’t until I absolutely cannot connect with the answer (in my brain) that I post an entry asking for help. So here goes!

Paula would like to know the following:

Paula:

“… All I can tell you is that the central female figure is from a musical family; has a brother who sings like an angel and becomes an international rock star; and, if I remember rightly, the heroine of the series has some trouble adjusting to motherhood; and her husband is a policeman of upper rank.  Can you help?”

If you think you might have an idea of who this sleuth is (or this sleuth’s  author) then please post a comment. Thank you in advance!

J. A. Jance’s Joanna Brady Mystery Series, Dorothy Simpson’s Luke Thanet Mystery Series, and… ?

March 4, 2011

Here’s a clue: I am have recently been going through my mail and comments to see if we can get some of these mysteries solved! The last of the Cozy Mystery site readers’ questions is this one from Janie. She would like some to find some new authors to read who are similar to J. A. Jance… well, Jance’s Joanna Brady series. Also, in the same vein as Dorothy Simpson‘s Luke Thanet series.

Janie:

“… J A Jance’s Joanna Brady series… One thing I like about the Joanna Brady series is that you don’t just get to know Sheriff Brady as a sheriff – you also get to know her as a mom, a daughter, a widow, a newlywed, etc. That’s not what each book is about, yet you see the change and progression over time. For the same reason, I loved Dorothy Simpson’s Luke Thanet series. Neither are “cozies,” really, but they are more personal than, say, a police procedural.

Can anyone recommend other mysteries that do this?”

Please post a comment if you have any recommendations. And, as always, thank you in advance!
