Favorite Authors Bring a Smile on My Face…. and Age Me!

June 17, 2007

I think that I have written about how little time I now spend actually reading my favorite cozy mysteries. I find that I am spending more and more time researching for the site than I had expected. While trying to put together the past lists of the Edgar nominations and winners, I found myself smiling as I came across one after another familiar authors… some of whom I enjoy immensely, but simply haven’t read in a while.

I remember some of the authors from my mystery reading groups, some of them I remember from a time long ago when my children were young and went to bed at eight o’clock (giving me time to read books other than Grover Goes to School, or Oscar’s Rotten Birthday.) Some of the authors I actually remember from my college years… which, believe me, was an entire other lifetime ago.

Good grief! Ellis Peters won the Edgar’s Best Novel category for Death and the Joyful Woman in 1963! How can that be! I’m still enjoying her books!!!! And how about Ngaio Marsh being nominated in 1967 for Killer Dolphin!!!  1971…. no, it couldn’t have been…. Patricia Moyes was nominated for Many Deadly Returns. Tony Hillerman (The Fly on the Wall) and P. D. James (Shroud for a Nightingale) are from 1972!!! Tell me it ain’t so!

It’s the "déjà vu" syndrome………… the "I-can-remember-exactly-what-was-going-on-in-my-life-while-I-read-this-book" feelings that made me smile as I typed up some of these authors’ names.  Some of the authors are people who I have never stopped enjoying, and who I still read. But there are others who I had almost forgotten about… like friends from my past who reappear…. and I can’t wait to read their books again.

Too Many Lists… So Little Space… A Whole Lot of Time…

May 30, 2007

I have been working on the Edgar Awards for the last few days, and am not sure that I am going to continue. You know, they started in 1946, and with as many awards as they give out each year, and with as many nominations, that’s a lot of information.

So, right now I am contemplating just going back to the year 2000… for listing all of the nominated mystery authors and people who have helped foster the mystery genre. I am thinking that from 1946 to 1999, I will just list the winners.

The problem I have with the above mentioned solution to my problem of too many lists, is that I truly believe that all nominated people and works of mystery are winners. If you are nominated for such a prestigious award, then you truly are a winner, and deserve to be celebrated.

And, as I type up each year’s nominations and winners….. I am amazed at how many of them are familiar to me. I would hate to think that because I think that the space on this website is limited, that I didn’t include a nominated person, book, movie, TV show, ETC,  that truly did help make "the mystery" flourish.

As you can probably see from reading this blog, I am no closer to deciding what to do. Of one thing, I am sure: I should get back to work on the Edgar Awards right now!

Edgar Allan Poe or Edgar Awards?

May 27, 2007

As I said in an earlier blog, I am going to try to make my way through all of the awards that are presented to mystery authors and their books…….. There are many more than I was aware of!

Today, I am writing about the Edgar Allan Poe Awards, or the more commonly called "Edgar Awards." They are awarded by the Mystery Writers of America, for works in several different mystery genres.

The different categories are : Best Novel, Best First Novel, Paperback Original, Biographical/Critical Fact Crime, Young Adult, Juvenile, Best Short Story, Motion Picture Screenplay, Play/TV Episode/Teleplay, the Robert L. Fish Memorial, the Raven Award, the Mary Higgins Clark Award, and the Grand Master Award.

The Awards are presented in April of each year, and are for works that were published the previous year. I am just finding all of the winners and nominees, and by the looks of it, it is going to take me a while to get them all listed on the awards page. I will, however, get it done…. eventually… The awards go back as far as 1946!

Derringers for Hire!?!

May 19, 2007

Well, I finally found the Derringer Award winners for 2006. I have posted them on the Derringer Award pages. As, I have said before, I think that ALL of the nominated authors are WINNERS…

Coming up, at the end of May, the Bouchercon nominations will be announced  for their 2007 awards. (I will write more on the different awards that are presented at the Bouchercon in a future blog.)

Isn’t it great that there are so many wonderful ways "our mystery authors" get the recognition they so rightfully deserve?
