"Auntie" says
Thank you for giving us this List!!!
Happy Summer!!!
“Auntie”
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Hi, Auntie. It has been so clammy and hot here in San Antonio that I totally forgot about today being the first day of summer. Thanks!
Deb says
Thank you so much! I’ve really missed Lewis and Hathaway and Morse!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
You’re welcome, Deb. I’m really sorry that I didn’t get this PBS Masterpiece schedule posted exactly a week ago… so that no one would miss Inspector Lewis’ first episode. I hope everyone was able to pick it up when their local channels reran (or rerun) it.
Donna says
Very excited to see that there will be more Endeavor episodes! I’ve been wondering whatever happened to that series, the first episode was so good. I heard that new Miss Marples and Poirots have been filmed, but have no idea when or where to catch them. Can someone “clue” us in?
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Me, too, Donna. I really enjoyed the Endeavor pilot, and I have to admit that I think the actor who is playing Detective Inspector Thursday (Roger Allum) is terrific.
Joshua says
Donna et al,
I don’t know when they’ll be on in the US, but I know that the new Poirot and Marple episodes started being shown in the UK over the last couple of weeks. Looks like Marple is a weekly thing so far with last Sunday being A Caribbean Mystery and tomorrow being Greenshaw’s Folly. They’ve broadcast one Poirot so far, Elephants Can Remember but don’t know when the next is being shown. Since it’s definitely the last series of Poirot, maybe they’re stretching it out a bit?
Who knows when we’ll get them exactly, but in the past it’s usually been a 5 or 6 month delay, so fingers crossed for Xmas or New Year’s!
Donna says
Thanks, Joshua! That is something to look forward to seeing. It sounds like Masterpiece is planning to air more traditional mysteries than in recent years, which is fine with me. I didn’t care for Zen or the one about the crude guy named Brody or something – it was too much like US shows that I don’t watch.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
(Donna, I’m glad you made me aware that Masterpiece Mystery was airing new shows.)
Donna says
You’re welcome, Danna. I really should post these things on my own site once in awhile, but it’s more fun to hang out here with you and other cozy mystery fans. 🙂
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Well, Donna, I’m glad you enjoy it and are able to hang out! (I do, too!)
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thank you, Joshua, for the Poirot and Miss Marple information. I didn’t know Poirot is in its last season…
(Here’s hoping for a Christmas airing.)
Joshua says
Unfortunately so. I read that David Suchet asked to film “Curtain” first for this series’ filming schedule so it wouldn’t be how he left the set. I just hope they keep Miss Marple going. I definitely think they could expand/combine more of her short stories for at least another series.
(Here’s hoping!)
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Joshua, I did not want to hear this about David Suchet! If you “take it back” – do you think it won’t be so?!?
Patti S. says
Thank you so much for this list, Danna! Looks like some really good shows. My husband brought home from his library where he works for me to watch-The Bletchley Circle. It sounds good. Has anyone watched this? Have a wonderful weekend!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Patti S, we watched The Bletchley Circle and really enjoyed it. My husband and I thought the beginning was stronger than the wrap-up, but it was good, either way. (The main lead, Anna Maxwell Martin, was in Bleak House, and she’s terrific!)
Joshua says
I loved Bletchley Circle! And agree with you, Danna, that the beginning was stronger than wrap-up. But still thought it was really terrific. I heard on the grapevine that it’s been renewed for a second series so I’m really looking forward to more episodes.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Joshua, Bletchley Circle should make for a really good television series. I love how the British are able to have strong women leads in their series.
Julia says
I loved The Bletchley Circle as well, though I might not have been tempted to watch the first one if I hadn’t recognized the name from the Maggie Hope series. The only thing that bothered me with the show was the rather elastic interpretation of the Official Secrets Act, which seemed to allow for anyone who signed it to discuss it with anyone else who signed it, knew someone who had signed it or had just heard of it…with the exception of one’s spouse.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Julia, I know exactly what you are saying. It’s odd that the main sleuth talked about this case with everyone but her well-meaning husband.
My husband and I watched Top Secret Rosies: The Female Computers of WW II, and it was excellent. I’m so glad they documented these wonderful women! Listening to them describing their previous work is wonderful.
Rho says
Did you notice that the “sexy” one of the girls was Diana Riggs daughter? They both appeared on a Dr. Who this season.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Rho, I had no idea she is Diana Rigg’s daughter. (I knew exactly which of the girls you were talking about. She certainly has her mother’s good looks!)
Joshua says
Very cool about Diana Rigg’s daughter; I had no idea. Diana Rigg as Ms. Bradley is one of my favorite TV sleuths, and I’ve always wished they had made more of those.
Agreed on Brit female leads. Bletchley had such complex female characters, I really appreciated that. They could’ve easily reverted to type, but they gave them a depth, even if murky, that made it so much more compelling.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Joshua, the resemblance is uncanny, isn’t it?
I loved Diana Rigg in The Mrs. Bradley Mysteries, as well as all her stints introducing Mystery! (Before they changed the name to Masterpiece Mystery.) I also loved her in the 1989 Mother Love. I keep checking to see when the DVD will finally be released of this absolutely riveting, thrilling, psychological movie. Right on par with Jack Nicholson’s “Here’s Johnny…”! Yow! I get chills just thinking about her Mother Love role!!!
Ann says
Foyle’s War is my favorite. Is this a new series?
Ann
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Yes, Ann, Foyle’s War it’s a new season of Foyle’s War.
Diane says
Enjoyed the first of the new set of Lewis. It is too bad that they will not be back next season. I did not like it when Morse ended and I will miss Lewis almost as much. Only the Brits can do mysteries!
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Diane, I didn’t know Inspector Lewis has been cancelled for next season…
Donna says
Someone mentioned last year (an interview or something) that Kevin Whately, aka Lewis, wants to retire. He’s been doing the shows since the 1980’s, after all, beginning with Inspector Morse, so we can’t really blame him even though we will all miss him and the show. Maybe it will carry on with Hathaway or through the Endeavor series? Total speculation on my part. I only hope the tradition of puzzle-type mysteries will continue on PBS, since they seem to be the only ones making such shows now.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Donna, I looked it up on Wikipedia, and it looks like both of them want to leave the show.
Sheila says
Danna. Thanks for this marvelous list. I will be watching the Inspector Lewis Series. I also saw the Endeavor Pilot. Am so glad that they made it into a series. I must set my DVR.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Sheila, my Sage (our DVR method of taping) is really great because we don’t have to keep resetting it. (It works off of a Favorites list that we can keep adding on to.) However, if we did, I’d be setting ours also!
marla says
I don’t know about your area but here in the buffalo Ny area we also get to see rerun of inspector Morse on Saturdays at 10. This will be interesting to compare when endeavor comes on. Also have you heard anything about masterpiece contemporary? Silks was supposed to run in the fall during the contemporary run but it looks like there isn’t going to be that since it has been placed with the mystery section.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Marla, I am not quite sure just how much of a mystery Silk is going to be, but I guess it makes sense that it would be able to qualify in both the Masterpiece Contemporary as well as the Masterpiece Mystery. (I don’t know anything about the Masterpiece Contemporary line-up.)

Deborah says
For anyone who missed the first episode or misses another, you can also watch full episodes on the PBS website. They are only available for a limited time, but it is usually a fairly long time.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thanks, Deborah, for the Masterpiece Mystery tip.
Carol says
Suzanne–I so agree. And the looks on Chief Superintendent Innocent’s and Hathaway’s faces were priceless!
Sheila O. UK says
Regarding Silk, I’ve lifted the following from Wikipedia as it sets out the show pretty well. A word of explanation first as not even UK folks understand the distinction! The UK has two types of lawyers – solicitors and barristers. Barristers are lawyers/advocates who specialise in Court cases – criminal or civil. Sometimes the distinction is rather blurred now! After getting a law degree, someone who wants to be a barrister takes the Bar course. Bar refers to standing at the Bar of a Court – ie in front of a Judge and not a drinking establishment! Having passed further exams, s/he can work as a barrister. Queen’s Counsel is a form of promotion – it isn’t given to everyone and you have to show you have excellent skills or a particular specialism.
“Silk is a British television drama series produced by the BBC and first shown in 2011. Written by Peter Moffat, the series follows a set of barristers, and what they do to attain the rank of Queen’s Counsel, known as ‘taking silk’.Silk was commissioned by Jay Hunt, then-Controller of BBC One and Ben Stephenson, BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning, and was filmed in July 2010. It is based on Moffat’s experiences at the Bar. In an interview with The Guardian, he said “I want to tell it as it really is. The extreme pressure, the hard choices, the ethical dilemmas, the overlap between the personal and the professional, principles fought for and principles sacrificed, the Machiavellian politics, the sex, the drinking, the whole story—life at the bar is the richest possible drama territory.”
The series’ title refers to the act of being appointed a Queen’s Counsel, known as “taking silk”. Queen’s Counsel wear distinctive full-bottomed wigs and silk gowns when they appear in Court. It is this gown which gives rise to the colloquial reference to Queen’s Counsel as “silks” as well as to the phrase “taking silk” referring to their appointment.
Overview
Silk follows a set of barristers from a chambers in London. The series’ main focus is on Martha Costello (Maxine Peake) and her ambition to become Queen’s Counsel as well as on her rival, Clive Reader (Rupert Penry-Jones), and the chambers’ two new pupils, Niamh Cranitch (Natalie Dormer) and Nick Slade (Tom Hughes). The chambers’ senior clerk, Billy Lamb (Neil Stuke), also features heavily.
The series’ writer, Peter Moffat, also wrote the series Criminal Justice and North Square, as well as an episode of Kavanagh QC. Before the series started, Moffat said in an interview, “I wanted Silk to be full of politics and intrigue. From my experience at the Bar, I felt life in chambers had all of those components, with big stories and lots of courtroom drama—but I wanted to make it as much about barristers and their life in chambers as about the trials”.”
Pupils are trainee barristers. Most barristers work out of what are called Chambers – which is a suite of offices within which each barrister rents a room. The members of the Chambers share admin costs and employ a number of Clerks to organise diaries, send bills etc, so the barrister doesn’t have to do it himself. The reference to wigs isn’t quite right – all barristers wear the same type of wig. Judges who may be barristers or solicitors wear the bigger, full wigs. Also, a silk’s gown is the same style as other barristers (often known as Juniors), but made of a different, more expensive material – to show that they are earning more! You have to have been at the Bar for quite a number of years before you can consider ‘taking silk’ so the cast members in this are a little too young looking! ‘The Bar’ is a very traditional place and many of its practices date back to the 18th century – though it is slowly modernising.
(I qualified as a barrister and work as a criminal lawyer. Sorry if you already know all this! I’m used to explaining my profession! I haven’t seen the show – too much like work!)
Danna - cozy mystery list says
Thanks, Sheila O. UK, for the Silk information.

In addition to the Inspector Lewis series, I also enjoyed D.C.I. Banks and Wallender.
Thanks for this website, it keeps me up to date on my lists.

Masterpiece mystery schedule for winter 2013 and 2014.
RonK says
Masterpiece Mystery is the best thing going on PBS. Why stop the series on 9/29/2013? There are other seasons of Foyle’s War, Endeavor, Silk and Inspector Lewis. I believe these reruns to be better than Masterpiece Classics. Please don’t have us wait until 2014 to bring back the Mystery’s.
Danna - cozy mystery list says
You know, RonK, I had never thought about the possibility of Masterpiece Mystery re-running the old Foyle’s War, Inspector Lewis, ETC shows. What a great idea.
I think it would be absolutely PHENOMENAL if PBS would start re-airing the old (as in 1980s and 1990s) Sherlock Holmes mystery shows. Those have got to be my all-time favorite Mystery! shows. I truly don’t think they have ever been surpassed. Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes – the way I think Sir Conan Doyle intended him to be. It’s too bad that the current generation isn’t being treated to what Doyle intended his Holmes to be.
