Amateur Sleuth Who Withholds Evidence…

August 23, 2011

As I have mentioned before, I keep a list of authors I have tried and did not like. I know I have mentioned my “*****YUCK” annotation for these authors. However, every once in a while, I read so many good reviews about one of these “*****YUCK” authors on my list that I simply have got to try him/her again. I have found some of my current favorite authors by revisiting my “*****YUCK” authors list. (It seems like sometimes I have set aside an author because I was just not in the right mood – only to find that I really like the author.)

Well, I just tried one of my previously tried “*****YUCK” authors, and 2/3 into the book, I thought: “This is great! I have a new author to add to my favorite author list.” I was enjoying the author’s writing style, her Cozy Mystery characters, AND  her village-type setting. (In this case it wasn’t a village, it was people who share a similar interest.)

UNTIL>>>

Aha!!! I think I found the reason I chose to cast this particular author off of my reading list: Her sleuth willingly and deliberately kept a VERY important piece of evidence from the local police department! Her sole purpose for not handing over the crucial evidence was: she and her best friend wanted to solve the mystery! No, she didn’t attempt to give the police the evidence, only to be told to mind her own business, and that she didn’t know what she was talking about. She truly kept the evidence a secret which, had the police department known about, they would have been able to solve the mystery a whole lot faster.

This brings me to these questions for you all!

1) When you read a Cozy Mystery author, is her/his writing style more important than the actual mystery? Or are you able to overlook the mystery in favor of the author’s writing style?

2) When you meet a main sleuth who does something you find reprehensible (like impeding the solving of the case by withholding crucial evidence) can you dismiss it in favor of the author’s good writing and terrific character development?

3) Is it OK to have a flawed main character who does things you might not agree with?

I am really struggling with whether or not to discontinue this mystery series. I had been enjoying the book so much, that I thought maybe I could overlook this sleuth’s actions. I’m still debating what to do… and wondered what you all thought about this. What do you think?

It’s Only August, and I’m Starting to Update Holiday Theme Mystery Lists…

August 21, 2011

Yep, just like the title of this entry indicates, I am starting to try to update my Holiday Theme Mystery Lists. So, it’s that time of year when I start to ask you all if you know of any new holiday theme mystery books. If you do, I’d love to hear from you!

As I have been looking around on the internet, I keep coming up with one particular author (who I have not read) – Melanie Jackson. Apparently she writes the Chloe Boston Mystery Series, which is a holiday/seasonal themed series. I have added her holiday mysteries to the different corresponding holiday lists on the site: Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and Valentine’s Day. (Actually, she has a Chloe Boston book of stories which include a Fourth of July theme mystery, but I decided not to add it to that page, since it has other holiday stories in the book as well.)Since Jackson has so many holiday theme mysteries, and her website says they are Cozy, I added a page for her on the site.

Getting back to my initial purpose for this entry… If you all know of any new mystery books that are set during different holiday seasons, would you please let me know?

PS>>> I sure wish Kate Borden would write more Peggy Jean Turner Cozy Mysteries! I loved the New England winter back-drop in her Thanksgiving and Christmas Cozy Mystery books…

Fickle, Fickle Birds!

August 19, 2011

I know that I have written about the drought we are experiencing this summer. Our water district has put us all on very stringent water restrictions. With our drought, I have been extra careful to make sure the birdbaths are always clean and full. And, I finally put out two bird feeders in the yard. I would never have done that while Sprite was with us, but now that she is gone, I find it almost comforting to see the birds congregating in our yard. I have particularly enjoyed watching the birds bring their fledglings to the bird baths… some of the smaller birds’ fledglings are absolutely tiny!

Our neighbors have a bird feeder in their yard that is located in the shade all day long. The birds absolutely love it. Our feeders aren’t shaded until later on in the day. For the last two/three weeks, our neighbors have let their bird feeder remain empty. (They had people visiting and didn’t want the birds to make a mess on their patio.) For those two/three weeks, I had to fill our two feeders every morning. Whenever I walked through the kitchen I was entertained by continuous activity outside… I had to actually “break up a few fights” when grackles tried to attack some of the other birds. (I can’t stand those grackles!)

Unfortunately, our neighbors house guests are gone, and so are “my” birds! As soon as our neighbors refilled their empty bird feeder, my feathery companions took off for better pastures! They return to our yard for a quick drink of water, and then they disappear.

I hope our neighbors have house guests again soon!
